Hibs Armageddon dividend, gift the young will never know

882

Well done to Hibernian fans for turning up in sufficient numbers to increase turnover to £8.0m from £6.9m the previous season, allowing the club to turn a profit in Armageddon season, despite some mediocre performances on the field.  The challenge for chairman Rod Petrie is to ensure the elevated income level results in the club outperforming village clubs, who survive on a fraction of Hibs income.

Hibernian should tower over St Johnstone, Inverness, Ross County and Motherwell in the race for second place.

Debt remains high at £5.5m (if Celtic’s debt was a similar proportion to turnover it would be circa £40m) but with the wages to turnover ratio at 49% there is scope to both bring debt down and get better value for money on the field.

30 friends, family and supporters of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust will be leaving Celtic Park on tomorrow afternoon heading to Dingwall where they will start a 400 mile cycle round every Scottish Premiership ground returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September at 3:30pm. Their goal is to raise £100k for Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MasScot) who are looking to introduce Scotland’s first ever mobile skin cancer screening unit which is bound to save lives given the success rates when diagnosing melanoma in early stages.

You can follow the team @TommyBurnsSCT and on Facebook this week as they begin this amazing fundraising event. Please support the team if you can at MyDonate. Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are signed up and Bertie Auld is getting involved in the final day.

You can participate in the last hour of the cycle, from St Mirren to Celtic Park, leaving around 2:30 on the Sunday, by emailing scottmcgarvey@gmail.com.  Scott will get you organised and help with a fundraising page.

Our thoughts to Jock Stein’s surviving family today, 28 years after his death, as another former Celtic manager prepares Scotland for a World Cup qualifier.  Those old enough to remember his time have a gift which the young will never know.

  5. I hate the SFA and their support for one club over all others.

Gordon Strachan loves Scotland and that job, the players play for him, themselves and the fans, not the SFA.

They want to play to qualify for a tournament AND our Captain loves playing for his country.

These are good enough reasons to support Scotland despite the disgusting behaviour of the SFA down the years. It isn’t the 70’s where Celtic players are booed – the fans who did that now follow Engurlund or Norn Iron and hate Scotland.

When fans come together to support players who are in part a number of our own both current and previous in the hope they give the country something to smile about we should be supportive if not supporting.

    That’s what I believe anyway.

Agree..shameful past. Go back 80 years it was worse. How many caps did the great Jimmy McGrory get, 7? It was the same with many other Celtic greats. Henderson got more caps than Jinky. Murdoch 12-13. Years ago I checked the total caps of the Lisbon Lions and the Oldco 72 Ecwc side. If my memory serves me correct I think Oldco won more.

You are correct, Danny Moffat did play for St. Dom’s and the Maggies, great player as were several others ( Tony McBride what a waste of talent) I played in the same team as them at the Maggies , back in the day as they say now.

Not many in that team did not play for St. Dom’s.

I sort of agree with you.

I have warmed to scotland since WGS took the job, a waft of change has engulfed the nation, whether it does any good, time will tell.

I really want to believe they have had their time, time that they have all but destroyed the game in scotland, maybes our day will come, who knows, the first thing that needs done is a level playing field, then we will see where we get to.

Sadly I won’t be around to see it, but hopefully my kids will, for sure their kids will, just a shame that it’s taken this long for any change to rear it’s head, but hey ho, it’s scotland, just the way it is.

    Snake,

    I concur.

As ive stated several times on here in the past. I fell out of love with my country in the late 80’s early 90s.

There is a small kernel beginning to reform in me. I didnt watch the game tonight, but did watch afir bit of last Fri nights game. Something I have not done for manys a year.

WGS looks like he is beginning to settle the team down and hopefully he can build on this.

As to the tartan army. Im not a fan, but they are mainly based of guys from smaller clubs and many east coasters. I think bery few sevconians go to support scotland any more. Times have changed greatly in that respect …..and for the better!

Tony McBride was about 4 years older than me at school. I saw him play every day. For me he was the best player in Castlemilk, and there was some talent up there in the late 60s. Big Stein earmarked him as the new Jinky and took him to CP at the same time as Kenny and Danny. It didnt work out but he would have fitted easily into the quality street gang.

    ……………………………………

I’ll be hoping Scotland win every game under Gordon Strachan but I don’t support them. The night before Gordon was officially sanctioned as Scotland manager (and I seem to remember them taking their time in finally making the appointment) BFDJ was on Radio Clyde e hurting them to give the job to Billy Stark who was in temporary charge at the time. Everyone else seemed to want Gordon but he’ll would have to have frozen over before BFDJ was going to give him his blessing.

It’s just symptomatic of what anyone involved with Celtic is up against in trying to make a mark in this country. Yesterday I read on CQN that the supporters of Xombie FC were upset that Lee Wallace hadn’t been selected to start tonight. One of them cited that he had a great game recently against Albion Rovers – a fourth tier team.

As I passed the newsagents today there was a sandwich board from the DR about Wallace, the hack on SSB tonight was saying he wished that Wallace had been selected and on BT, Billy Dodds was telling us that he preferred Wallace at left back. This is what we’re up against. They all seem to be on message. I wondered ‘why all this sudden obsession with Wallace?’ Lo and behold but someone on here supplies the answer earlier. Sevco will get a payment from the SFA for one of their players representing Scotland. They happen to be desperate for cash.

I wonder also if they see Wallace as a marketable asset to be sold in January. If he is involved with the Scotland team won’t that also hike up his value in the transfer market? How many other Sevco players are likely to attract transfer fees in January?

    Gents,

im looking for a favour. well 2 actually, but the second can wait till later.

A mate of mine who now works in Belgium, is looking for 2 tickets to the Ajax game in Amsterdam.

He has bought the 3-match home package but will only be able to make it back for the Milan game, so he would be willing to swap (or something like that) the Barca and Ajax home tickets to anyone who could get him the 2 tix for Amsterdam.

Im going to apply myself and see if I can get them, but given I have sourced tickets for away games locally rather than direct from Celtic, in recent years it is unlikely I will be lucky in applying.

Anyway, any help would be very much appreciated.

Well done Scotland and well done to Gordon Strachan for putting a team on the park that played some football. I’m not so sure about his choice of putting third tier players in the national squad, but it’s his squad and I guess he wants the dead club supporters on board. Will it work? Who cares?

I think I may not have made my position clear.

I agree with you and the other posters that the SFA have shown all the bias you and they stated but…..

they don’t own the national team anymore than Dermot Desmond or Peter Lawwell or Neil Lennon owns Celtic; they are merely temporary custodians.

I may protest the SFA’s handling of the national team by not going to the games, in the same way i may protest against Celtic if one of the aforementioned had been proven to have behaved badly enough.

However, i would not want Celtic to stop winning while I protested and so, I do not want Scotland to lose either. Scotland were good enough for Jock Stein, Big Billy and other Celts to answer the call.

I live and work here. I am not surrendering the national team to them.

My position is more or less the same as yourself. I’ll want Scotland to win because it’s what Gordon, Scott, Charlie and Shaun want (David Marshall too). I remember there was a similar feeling when Tommy Docherty took over the Scotland job and he cleaned out most of the Rangers players who had not been selected on merit. When he left it slowly reverted to type. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t do so again.
