Hibs Armageddon dividend, gift the young will never know

882

Well done to Hibernian fans for turning up in sufficient numbers to increase turnover to £8.0m from £6.9m the previous season, allowing the club to turn a profit in Armageddon season, despite some mediocre performances on the field.  The challenge for chairman Rod Petrie is to ensure the elevated income level results in the club outperforming village clubs, who survive on a fraction of Hibs income.

Hibernian should tower over St Johnstone, Inverness, Ross County and Motherwell in the race for second place.

Debt remains high at £5.5m (if Celtic’s debt was a similar proportion to turnover it would be circa £40m) but with the wages to turnover ratio at 49% there is scope to both bring debt down and get better value for money on the field.

30 friends, family and supporters of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust will be leaving Celtic Park on tomorrow afternoon heading to Dingwall where they will start a 400 mile cycle round every Scottish Premiership ground returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September at 3:30pm. Their goal is to raise £100k for Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MasScot) who are looking to introduce Scotland’s first ever mobile skin cancer screening unit which is bound to save lives given the success rates when diagnosing melanoma in early stages.

You can follow the team @TommyBurnsSCT and on Facebook this week as they begin this amazing fundraising event. Please support the team if you can at MyDonate. Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are signed up and Bertie Auld is getting involved in the final day.

You can participate in the last hour of the cycle, from St Mirren to Celtic Park, leaving around 2:30 on the Sunday, by emailing scottmcgarvey@gmail.com.  Scott will get you organised and help with a fundraising page.

Our thoughts to Jock Stein’s surviving family today, 28 years after his death, as another former Celtic manager prepares Scotland for a World Cup qualifier.  Those old enough to remember his time have a gift which the young will never know.

I think I may not have made my position clear.

I agree with you and the other posters that the SFA have shown all the bias you and they stated but…..

they don’t own the national team anymore than Dermot Desmond or Peter Lawwell or Neil Lennon owns Celtic; they are merely temporary custodians.

I may protest the SFA’s handling of the national team by not going to the games, in the same way i may protest against Celtic if one of the aforementioned had been proven to have behaved badly enough.

However, i would not want Celtic to stop winning while I protested and so, I do not want Scotland to lose either. Scotland were good enough for Jock Stein, Big Billy and other Celts to answer the call.

I live and work here. I am not surrendering the national team to them.

    ………………………………….

I respect your position on this matter. I guess my own differs because I don’t regard myself as Scottish and they have given me too many reasons over the past 5 decades or so to recognise that they don’t see me and my type as Scottish either. I used to support Scotland as a teenager and can still remember them turning up at games wearing their Rangers scarves to cheer on the inevitable six Rangers players who seemed to inhabit every Scotland team managed by Ian MacColl, and other former arrangers players who seemed to be their first port of call.

When the booing of Celtic players took hold and Kenny was dropped by Willie Ormond, I knew that this was not my team.

  8. marrakesh

It was Ron Yeats that was picked for that match (4 Rangers players and one ex-Ger and only two Celts- Murdoch & Hughes). Big Jock must have been biased too :-)

We complain about the few times our Lions were picked by Scotland but Big Jock regularly used to pull them from squads when they had been picked. He would also get mad at them when they opted out of squads when he thought they should play, as happened to Jinky once.

SFTB, I liked the last sentence of your post at 23.04. Why should we have to give up supporting our country because the body that oversee them are a shower of shite?

I was shouting for the players on the park tonight, even the walkaway deidheids. I wasn’t shouting for the SFA.

You are correct, tommy was an exceptional keeper (as a school boy) but just couldn’t make it in the big leagues like so many others.

I really doubt that Willie Ormond had any say in Kenny Dalglish’s dropping. Willie had continued to pick Kenny when his Scotland form justified his being dropped. Kenny was in a better vein of form when he was de-selected. That strongly suggests that someone told Willie Ormond that a Celtic player was not breaking George Young’s record and Willie complied. I think Kenny went on to break the Scotland consecutive appearance record as a Liverpool player.

It is strange that all those Rangers biases were stronger in the 60s and 70s when we generally supported Scotland than they were in the 80s and 90s (witness Paul McStay’s selection record) when Celtic fans decided they were not Scottish anymore.

I think it had a lot to do with the emergence of a creditable ROI team which we could support instead.

  17. It’s really no an easy choice, most of us are born and bred in scotland, yet many of us can’t bring ourselfs to support the national team.

We all know the reasons why.

Now we have a problem, a problem that we shouldn’t be having, but it’s there all the same.

When I was a wean, didn’t know anything about the sectarian divide, I wanted to see my country winning, didn’t have a clue, or was bothered about who was playing, just wanted scotland to win.

As I got older, more informed, things changed, I don’t want to feel the way I do.

How do we get our football back ???????????????????

It’s our game, we are the ones who make the game what it is, not the shysters who run the game, it’s about the support, as the Big Man said.

Take our game back, give it back to the people who really matter.

    A level playing field.

It’s night and day compared to the national team, and you well know it.

Whatever problems we as a support have with our suits, at the end of the day, they have, and have had, the best interests of the club at heart, and I truly believe that, whether they have gone about things in the correct manner is another matter.

I compare them only in the sense of their both being temporary.

As you know from my posts here, I do not believe our Board have harmed me or my team anywhere near as much as the SFA have.

I was projecting a situation where the Board may give us a dilemma about continuing to support or not. I was not suggesting that this situation already exists.

My sole point is that the SFA, though they are an impediment for us all, are not the National team. It is possible to support Scotland and want them to win without giving the SFA credit for it.

  24. SFTB

See ‘ourselves alone’ refers to a brother Davie – I might be mistaken calling him James (he was the middle brother – would be 63-64ish now).

I agree with you absolutely. Prior to the emergence of a creditable ROI team we never really got a chance to see the ROI playing football. I love supporting ROI in international matches. I feel a sense of identity supporting them.

I agree also about Willie Ormond. I’m sure he was instructed from on high to omit Kenny from the team on the night in question the game in this country has always been run to benefit one team. However, I didn’t fully appreciate exactly how corrupt it was until the revelation that have been made post Administration Day 14 February 2012.
