Hibs Armageddon dividend, gift the young will never know

882

Well done to Hibernian fans for turning up in sufficient numbers to increase turnover to £8.0m from £6.9m the previous season, allowing the club to turn a profit in Armageddon season, despite some mediocre performances on the field.  The challenge for chairman Rod Petrie is to ensure the elevated income level results in the club outperforming village clubs, who survive on a fraction of Hibs income.

Hibernian should tower over St Johnstone, Inverness, Ross County and Motherwell in the race for second place.

Debt remains high at £5.5m (if Celtic’s debt was a similar proportion to turnover it would be circa £40m) but with the wages to turnover ratio at 49% there is scope to both bring debt down and get better value for money on the field.

30 friends, family and supporters of the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer Trust will be leaving Celtic Park on tomorrow afternoon heading to Dingwall where they will start a 400 mile cycle round every Scottish Premiership ground returning to Celtic Park on Sunday 15th September at 3:30pm. Their goal is to raise £100k for Melanoma Action and Support Scotland (MasScot) who are looking to introduce Scotland’s first ever mobile skin cancer screening unit which is bound to save lives given the success rates when diagnosing melanoma in early stages.

You can follow the team @TommyBurnsSCT and on Facebook this week as they begin this amazing fundraising event. Please support the team if you can at MyDonate. Packie Bonner and Frank McGarvey are signed up and Bertie Auld is getting involved in the final day.

You can participate in the last hour of the cycle, from St Mirren to Celtic Park, leaving around 2:30 on the Sunday, by emailing scottmcgarvey@gmail.com.  Scott will get you organised and help with a fundraising page.

Our thoughts to Jock Stein’s surviving family today, 28 years after his death, as another former Celtic manager prepares Scotland for a World Cup qualifier.  Those old enough to remember his time have a gift which the young will never know.

My sole point is that the SFA, though they are an impediment for us all, are not the National team. It is possible to support Scotland and want them to win without giving the SFA credit for it.

    …………………………………………………………………

I know what you are driving at here and can appreciate that you are able to see the team differently from the way you view the governing body.

For me it is too late to do that. I no longer have that ability. To me they are both intrinsically linked. From time to time there may seem to be less of an anti Celtic/ pro Rangers bias but sadly they tend to revert to type.

  3. Good evening all

We are going through a troubled time at the moment. So please excuse my absence from the blog for the near future. Mrsweefra and I just luv you all. A wee bit of patience please, and we will be, hopefully, back to normal. We are a very special family.

Now, off to bed, and goodnight to all my Family. :))

We are not too far apart at all. I understand all the impediments and I feel them too. The modern Scotland fan is not anti-Celtic as much as anti-Celtic & Rangers.

There is still resentment of us and you may wish to separate yourself from that. You, as a resident of Spain, with a cracking pool, have already done that.

I, however, continue to live and raise a family here. I grew up supporting Scotland, I was severely tested in my affection for them but I still support them.

My affection for the national team comes a poor third to Celtic and Celtic reserves though.

  7. Enjoyed reading about the days gone by when posters were chatting about great players from Castlemilk who for some reason or other never made the grade.I also played in a cracking school team at St. Mungo’s and regularly contested cup finals at the Rosebury ground in the gorbals/Oatlands.

They were great days and to think of the talent I played with and against one wonders how more of them never made the grade.

I reckon a combination of bad luck, not being quoted and a lack of dedication were to blame.Great dats though. HH

I honestly can’t think of another country on the planet that the support is divided like ours is.

I’m sure I will be corrected on this, but FFS, it’s 2013 and we are still arguing about whether we support our country or not.

BARCELONA forward Lionel Messi is due to appear in court – just days before he is due to line up to face Celtic in Glasgow in the Champions League.

Messi and his father will appear in court to answer charges of tax evasion on Friday, 27 September after a hearing scheduled for next week was postponed. Barcelona are due to face Celtic at Parkhead on Tuesday 1, October.

Maybe they’ll remand him in custody. :-)

I was at Cowglen between 67 and 73. Played CF and scored some goals in both Sat morning and afternoon teams! KD’s future wife was also there during that time.

Some great players in those teams and ‘team building’ at Joanna’s on a Monday night and White Elephant on a Thursday.
