Highland trips shadow final Champions League round

501

This time next week Celtic will have played two competitive games, both at home, and we will have a chance to properly assess preseason preparations.  Even if victories are achieved against HJK Helsinki and Aberdeen the challenges for the remainder of the month, with at least four and possibly five games away from Celtic Park, with the possibility of only one home game, in the final Champions League qualifying round, will ensure Celtic are tested to their limit.

Two trips to the Highlands ahead of the Champions League qualifiers would be an unwelcome distraction.  Maybe an occasion for the youth and fringe players.

Let me know if you want to advertise in the forthcoming issue of CQN Magazine, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

Sevco will not be doing anything, anywhere, ever again.

They are being phased out, and believe it or not, Celtic have been the Star Trekkers in doing so, they just kept the media out of the loop.

Imagine we were triumphalist about doing that?

There is definitely movements happening soon.

When Paul67 said don’t play PL at Poker he wasn’t talking just about domestic matters. I think Celtic have engineered a way into one of the top divisions of England/UK whilst SLAMMING the desperate scum where they really belong.

When we look back and when we take into account the opponent that HATES us was cheating us Systematically and conned us out of approx £100 Million then anyone who thinks we would ever acquiesce has less Faith than I would ever want in a CELT.

Things change but some things are so timeless that they are the very real reason we are what we are. I’d gladly lose the SPL to every other club in the League now the cheats are gone as long as we went out there and played the GLASGOW CELTIC WAY.

Champions League riches more desirable than ever for Celtic

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon will know what is expected of him from his own supporters on Wednesday night as he prepares to take another step nearer the Champions League group stages.

It is a test the manager will relish and he has enough pressure bearing down on him to be unduly concerned by the needs of Scottish football.

But Celtic must carry a broad beam of expectation across their shoulders.

Motherwell will dip their toe into the Champions League pool first but few can imagine how Stuart McCall’s side might look to deal with such perennial European participants as Panathinaikos. Like St Johnstone, who lost 3-1 on aggregate to cash-rich Turkish side Eskishehirspor, their assignment looks a tall order, and no-one need tell Lennon about the threat of HJK Helsinki, who are in mid-season and have already played 19 league games. Dundee United, too, must engage with a powerful foe in the Europa League.

Few, including manager Peter Houston, will be fooled by Dynamo Moscow’s position at the bottom of the Russian Premier League after just three games.

They lost again at the weekend, this time to Zenit St Petersburg. But they have never been relegated from the top league in Russia and can count of Kevin Kuranyi, the former Germany forward, and Andrei Voronin, the former Liverpool striker.

Given the ructions that have befallen Scottish football over recent months, there is an extra requirement for Celtic to bring some light to the game.

The current co-efficient standings see Scotland ranked in 28th place, and only projected to head downwards. St Johnstone’s elimination saw them help Scotland’s case by a co-efficient score of 0.5. The value of a club reaching the group stages of the Champions League is highlighted by Cyprus’ position in the ranking table. APOEL Nicosia’s success last season, when they reached the quarter final of the competition after reaching the group stage for only the second time in their – and their country’s – history, has helped take Cyprus up to the 13th place. It is in these loftier areas where Scotland could once be found before a decline set in. Such a downward spiral is hardly likely to be halted by the new economic climate triggered by Rangers’ demise last season.

The reality of the Ibrox side’s own situation means they will not have to worry about such terms as co-efficient for some time to come. Ally McCoist’s side only just managed to overcome Brechin City in the Ramsdens Cup yesterday, in a clash which underlined their new status. The burden has fallen on other clubs, and Celtic will be under no illusion as to what it means to a country that requires the addition of some soothing balm after such a chaotic period in its football history.

Celtic’s own welfare, too, could hinge on a European run, preferably one involving the Champions League group stages. The inability of Rangers to progress further than the third qualifying round of the Champions League last August is reckoned to have been the moment when Craig Whyte began to shift very uneasily indeed in his seat. This was because he knew just how large a gulf there is in income streams between the Champions League and the Europa League, where Rangers failed to go further than a single round as well. The die was cast that evening in Sweden.

For Whyte, the game was up as soon as the final whistle blew in Malmo, where nine-man Rangers fell to 2-1 aggregate defeat against their Swedish opponents. Thankfully, the failure of Celtic to reach the group stage will not produce such catastrophic results. But Lennon knows his hopes of adding to the signing of goalkeeper Fraser Forster depend on overcoming not just Helsinki, but whoever would then stand in their way in a qualifying round play-off.

At present, with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell having made an appeal last week for fans to buy season tickets, the manager looks more likely to lose players than add to them. Reports have linked Manchester United with a move for Victor Wanyama, one of the brightest stars in the Scottish football firmament last season. Juho Makela was never quite one of those during a spell with Hearts, but he is one of the principal dangermen in the Helsinki ranks.

Lennon, though, will have covered all the bases. He is haunted by previous exits in Europe, particularly a Champions League elimination at the first hurdle against Braga two seasons ago. Almost from the moment the league was won last season against Kilmarnock, way back in April, Lennon has spoken of the need to be ready for the challenge of the Champions League qualifiers. In the media room at Rugby Park, he talked of making sure the pre-season programme was tailored to ensuring the side was as prepared as it is possible to be. Even as he spoke, who could have imagined Scottish football’s landscape would change to the extent that while Celtic look to prolong their life in European football’s elite club football competition, Rangers are dusting themselves down after a hard-won victory in the Ramsdens Cup. The lowering of ambitions at Ibrox cannot be allowed to impinge on Celtic’s own horizons.

I hope he DRIVES Celtic into the CL group stages and stays, Capitano is a massive thing for ANY Ambitious player.

Celtic NEED to be attacking the Champions League this season more than any other.

I love Scott Brown and Beram Kayal a lot but there is no doubt Victor will grow into being the best all round player this season.

Kojo, as usual talks good business sense, Sell high after buying low. I always have that feeling that Kojo is letting his Supreme Business expertise overcome his Natural feeling for Celtic and it is at the moment not being fruitful.

I am puzzled by yesterday’s utterings by Charles Green and can only surmise that like Alistair he is trying to provoke censure from the game’s governing body, which will allow him to flounce off in the huff and sell to the new buyers waiting in the wings.

Problem is that the regulator (SFA), under the guidance of Ranger’s shareholder Robert Campbell Ogilvie seems to be immune to insult when it comes from Ibrox.

Astonishing comments and behaviour from Green and Murray: Green applauds as Huns chant “if you hate Stewart Regan…”, then boasts at having a debt free club (erm, aye, that’s what happens when you stiff creditors to the tune of 134 million quid).

To top it all, Green then appears to welcome the financial difficulties of clubs who have actually paid their taxes and suppliers.

It will be interesting to see if tabloid terror tactics trump natural justice. Those bigoted supporters of every other team is Scotland will still expect the SFA , SFL and SPL to play by the rule book. I also expect the taxman to act without fear or favour. If sevco want to be rangers then they still owe the British taxpayers a HUNdred million sterling. The only people withe less dignity than sevco are the Scottish media which is not surprising at all after a lifetime of bigoted reporting. Still a way to go here and sevco aren’t looking to win friends.

  18. Good morning CQNers from a bright and sunny MK.

Given their belligerence of Green,Murray and McCoist I think the SFA must summon all three to account for their weekend utterances. The SFA have also got to charge their new club for the misdeeds of their supporters in singing sectarian songs and igniting smoke bombs.

Green, Murray and McCoist are shamelessly goading the SFA and should the SFA fail to bring them to book it’ll raise even more questions about their will to enforce the remnants of their rule book.

  19. Staggering the mouthing off they done yesterday, considering they were granted a conditional license only in order for the game to go ahead.

  22. After A Summer Of Gloom And Doom, SPL Clubs Experiencing Ticket Resurgence

Scotland’s top football clubs “have been given a massive cash bonus” ahead of the new season, as fans “back calls to boost attendances,” according to Lauren Crooks of the Scotland DAILY RECORD. Most clubs in the Scottish Premier League say season ticket sales “are up on this time last year” despite Rangers dropping out of the top flight. The money generated “is seen as vital” to clubs who will miss out on cash generated at the gate by the demoted Rangers’ huge fanbase. Hibs have outsold last season’s total of books more than 7,100. Aberdeen and Dundee United “have installed a season ticket counter so fans can keep track of how many the club have sold.” Officials at Dundee United, whose current total sits at more than 4,400, have told fans that getting the tickets “is the best way to ensure the club survives the financial storm.” The club expected to see the biggest increase are Ross County, who are in the SPL for the first time this season. But while the Staggies will not provide exact numbers on their season ticket sales, GM Ranald Gilbert “insists the outlook is good.” Gilbert said, “We have more than doubled our sales compared to last year” (DAILY RECORD, 7/29). The DAILY RECORD also noted that the newco Rangers “began their new life” outside the SPL Sunday, but “struggled to beat” Brechin City 2-1 in extra time at the Ramsdens Cup (DAILY RECORD, 7/29). In London, Rory Smith wrote “to much of the rest of Scottish football, this was the start of Rangers’ calvary, the club’s punishment for the sins of the past decade or more, the gluttony and the greed and the allegations of what is, to borrow a phrase from Arsène Wenger, the most bare-faced financial doping.” But for the team’s fans “who have suffered through the dark days of the judge’s gavel and the administrator’s axe,” the game “was a celebration in its purest form: a carnival for existence itself” (LONDON TIMES, 7/30).
