History in a game

674

I know we met them in a European Cup semi-final in 1972, but the forthcoming tie against Inter Milan is all about the wonderful heritage we were gifted in 1967.  La Grande Inter, as Internazionale, then the greatest team Italy had known, had won two of the previous three European Cups and were controversially denied in the semi-final of the other.  They won three of the previous four Italian titles, denied the fourth on a play-off, and topped the table with two weeks of the Italian season to go.

They were an awesome team with gifted strikers but it was the defence which marked them out; this was a team who didn’t concede goals, when they took the lead, they kept it.

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill and Clark; Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, and Jock Stein, not only killed La Grande Inter, but did so, so comprehensively, they forced Inter, and the rest of the Italian game, to change their ways.  Catenaccio, the suffocating, ultra-defensive system, was finished.

For Europe, the consequences were profound.  Celtic, with their wave after wave of attack; 45 attempts on goal in a European final; were celebrated everywhere.  The drift towards caution stopped, teams realised the very best defensive sides could be beaten into submission by sheer talent.  In the two subsequent decades the dominant Latin countries of Italy, Spain and Portugal, who had won all previous European Cups, would win the trophy only once.

Football fans across the globe, not just Celtic fans, will want to be there when the teams meet in a game which represents History, not just our history, Europe’s History.

We’ll talk later today on moves being put on the SFA at the moment.  ‘Here we go again…….’

A former Grade One ref has rocked the title run-in with a string of sensational allegations against our top whistlers.

Jim McGilvray insists that Scottish referees could WRECK the final nine games of the season involving Rangers, Celtic and Hearts.

In a devastating Mailsport exclusive, the ref who quit football two years ago after a bust-up with his bosses claims:

Weak and inexperienced refs will take charge of the season’s most crucial games.

One whistler has been appointed after ASKING to take charge of a Rangers game because he’s a FAN.

The Scottish League are in danger of ruining the title race with their blunders.

McGilvray rapped: “I was driven out because I could no longer stand an organisation which stood back and watched wrong decisions being taken out of ignorance.

“It’s a form of corruption and it has being going on for years.

“EIGHT of the 11 refs who’ll handle the games of the top three aren’t even on the FIFA list. The system is all wrong.”

McGilvray claims one of the League’s biggest blunders is having East Kilbride official Bobby Tait in charge of the Rangers – Kilmarnock clash at Ibrox on the second last day of the season.

It’s understood Tait, in his last season, asked for one last Ibrox game before he retired.

But McGilvray blasted: “You CANNOT have favouritism like that.

“I like Bobby as a man but everybody knows his allegiance to Ibrox is so open it is embarrassing.”

Tait was slated for allowing four minutes of injury time at Tynecastle in February when Hearts’ Jose Quitongo scored an equaliser against Celtic.

When the clubs met at Celtic Park last month, Tait played only 39 seconds extra in a 0-0 draw in which Celtic’s Stephane Mahe took several minutes to be stretchered off.

McGilvray reckons mistakes have been made at EVERY turn in the run-in.

He said: “Dougie Smith did Celtic- Motherwell yesterday. But he showed his frailty on the big occasion when he dropped his yellow card at Ibrox a couple of seasons ago and had a humour bypass when Paul Gascoigne lifted it and pretended to book him.

“Smith cautioned Gazza instead for having a harmless bit of fun!

“Cup final ref Willie Young is also the man in the middle when Aberdeen play Rangers this afternoon. But he’s not been having a good season.

“The day after Tait’s game at Ibrox, John Underhill takes Celtic’s match at Dunfermline.

“He is out of his depth. Underhill did Celtic’s game with Aberdeen at Pittodrie four weeks ago and was slaughtered in the Supervisor’s report.

“He even ran after a player to book him. That’s a sure sign of weakness.

“On the last day of the term, Kenny Clark takes Celtic’s game with St. Johnstone. He’s remembered for not sending off Duncan Ferguson after his Ibrox clash with Jock McStay.

“Anybody else would have been struck off the list but Kenny was protected because he’s on the FIFA list. It’s not right.”

Even current refs agree with McGilvray’s views and one confirmed: “Some of these appointments are bewildering.”

However, secret talks HAVE taken place involving Rangers secretary Campbell Ogilvie, Motherwell director Alan Dick and George Cumming of the SFA to give control of the referees’ rota to the SFA in time for next season.

    Kingston charged over ref comment

Laryea Kingston shows his anger at Pittodrie

Laryea Kingston was angry at being sent off at Pittodrie

Hearts midfielder Laryea Kingston has been charged with misconduct by the SFA after he accused referee Steve Conroy of being a racist.

The Ghanian international, 26, made the comment after he was sent off against Aberdeen on Saturday and has since expressed his “sincere regrets”.

Steve Conroy has reported Kingston for using offensive, insulting and abusive language after being red-carded.

Kingston will appear before the SFA’s disciplinary committee on 1 May.

    Interview: Hearts coach Stephen Frail

    Interview: Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood

BBC Scotland reported that several players heard the accusation made by Kingston during the 1-0 defeat.

Kingston had been booked early in the second half for persistent fouling and was shown a second yellow card after a clumsy challenge on Barry Nicholson.

If the committee finds the player guilty of the misconduct charge, a further penalty may be imposed on him

    SFA spokesman

Speaking to Hearts News, he said: “I am extremely sorry for the events on Saturday afternoon.

“While I am still disappointed at the decision for the second yellow card, I must express sincere regret at the comment I made of the referee.

Kingston continued: “It was completely out of character and is in no way part of my make-up.

“I will, at the earliest opportunity, apologise to Mr Conroy as I feel I over reacted and I would hope that my record since coming to Scotland and my future conduct will demonstrate that I am only interested in playing top class but fair football.”

The SFA said: “Through the application of the automatic Disciplinary Procedures, the player has incurred an automatic 2 match suspension for his misconduct in the game.

“He will be suspended for Heart of Midlothian’s matches against Dundee United on 17 March and Hibernian on 1 April.

“The player’s case will be heard on 1 May. If the committee finds the player guilty of the misconduct charge, a further penalty may be imposed on him.”

I don’t think so, no. I’m not looking for favours from Peter Lawwell and Eric Riley. I’m hoping that they can influence the organisation to recognise that an overhaul is necessary and make the whole operation more professional, accountable and transparent. For me, that would be worth more than ad hoc decisions being challenged by senior insiders.

If you read my submission, you will see that I was expressing doubt about people who translate their imaginings and suppositions into hardened certainties. Both you and the Panel hearing Tonev’s case have done precisely that.

The evidence suggests no-one approached Tonev on the 55th minute to ask him what he said or did not say. He first heard about it at some unspecified time after the match. If he was then asked to recall what he had said to Tonev 40 minutes or an hour earlier, I would be surprised and suspicious if he did recall his exact words in what, according to him, was a low key uncontroversial exchange.

If any of you are up in court in a foreign justice system where you cannot use your mother tongue you will naturally be hesitant and guarded. Anyone unaware of this is not fit to judge.

I wonder if the personal reasons that Lord Bonomy gave for resigning from the ICTY for the trial of Radovan Karadžić were the same reasons that he got the job from his predecessor Richard May a few years earlier. Richard May resigned for health reasons. Allegedly he was placed in such mental turmoil dealing with the former Balkan issue that he became an out and out racist.
