History in a game

674

I know we met them in a European Cup semi-final in 1972, but the forthcoming tie against Inter Milan is all about the wonderful heritage we were gifted in 1967.  La Grande Inter, as Internazionale, then the greatest team Italy had known, had won two of the previous three European Cups and were controversially denied in the semi-final of the other.  They won three of the previous four Italian titles, denied the fourth on a play-off, and topped the table with two weeks of the Italian season to go.

They were an awesome team with gifted strikers but it was the defence which marked them out; this was a team who didn’t concede goals, when they took the lead, they kept it.

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill and Clark; Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, and Jock Stein, not only killed La Grande Inter, but did so, so comprehensively, they forced Inter, and the rest of the Italian game, to change their ways.  Catenaccio, the suffocating, ultra-defensive system, was finished.

For Europe, the consequences were profound.  Celtic, with their wave after wave of attack; 45 attempts on goal in a European final; were celebrated everywhere.  The drift towards caution stopped, teams realised the very best defensive sides could be beaten into submission by sheer talent.  In the two subsequent decades the dominant Latin countries of Italy, Spain and Portugal, who had won all previous European Cups, would win the trophy only once.

Football fans across the globe, not just Celtic fans, will want to be there when the teams meet in a game which represents History, not just our history, Europe’s History.

We’ll talk later today on moves being put on the SFA at the moment.  ‘Here we go again…….’

  1. Time for Celtic to show they really are a team like no other and continue to support their player all the way and to hell with the consequences for Celtic and also for the corrupt SFA.

Go on Celtic do it, Fergus would expect nothing else.

  2. I’m sure that this case was deid in the water due to it being a he said/he said situation until the northern light mcsleekit originally fae paisley opened his gub and all of a sudden it’s back on the table…..furthermore after the first decision was made he broth moothed that his player was vindicated and yet when we mentioned appealing said we were out of order for raising the issue again……..there’s the culprit

Stop being a smart arse, every one is entitled to have their say, it’s only opinions, you’ve had yours and that’s fine, please allow others to have there’s, it’s good manners, and a goos debate.

  4. The balance of probability is used in Civil matters.

On Logan reacting to the comment, by going to the referee, and manager straight after the comment, that is then looking at circumstantial evidence, which is part of Common Law.

  6. My friends in Celtic,

Yesterday was one of the most bhoyant days on CQN for some time. A high profile European draw to savour and discuss.

Today outsiders will sneer and refer to our supporters disciplinary record and a player found “guilty” of racist behaviour.

Both are totally unrepresentative of who we are and what we stand for, but we need to tackle both with all the means at our disposal.

A very small minority of fans need educated about the responsibilities of supporting our great club. Yes the charge many of us posting on here face is hypocrisy, we have done much worse. But times have changed, and what was maybe tolerated years ago is simply not acceptable now. ( Similar to Drink Driving )

As for Tonev, if our manager and custodians thought for a minute he was guilty he would have been straight down the M6 with a clause invoked to end his loan.

Fight this as far as we possibly can.

    HH.

PS : Please do not think I am advocating this for a minute, but if Tonev had spat rather than use verbal he may have been five games to the good.

Do I think a special case has been made because he’s a Celtic player.? In the words of super salary. Absolutely.

Celtic have also been branded by the SFA in this matter. They have, effectively, been branded as at least gullible by believing Tonev instead of Logan . Using the `balance of probability` argument, Celtic should have arrived at the same conclusion as the SFA . Celtic, of course, would be biased. After all, they see the player almost every day and do not have as much insight into his character as do the geniuses at the SFA.

There is only one question that has to be answered and that is

    What will Celtic do?

    A. Play Tonev in every game ignoring the decision.

    B. Accept the decision therefore surrendering in silence.

    C. Accept the decision although take it to arbitration, and if found not guilty/ proven, then sue the SFA for significant damages.

    D. Publicly condemn the SFA using examples of double standards and take this as an opportunity to rid the old boys from office.

  9. Read the appeal panels’ findings.

They seem to be saying they themselves do not make a judgement on the issue but agree that in the original case verdict they agree there was nothing untoward in the hearing or the decision making process.

Not sure if I’m misinterpreting or not, not being a legal eagle.

However if I am correct why the hell were the not able to come to this conclusion on the day of the appeal rather than delaying their decision for almost two weeks.

Don’t know the facts for sure – same as everyone else but the original decision was a disgrace; this underlines the SFA are truly a useless shower.

Really feel sorry for both players but particularly Tonev. Neither are winners here but for sure Tonev is the bigger loser.

  11. So if it is accepted that Tonev said something…what did he say?…im still hoping for a response from someone…anybody there?…

“They have explained that he gave his evidence in a guarded and hesitant manner and that his evidence on the understanding of the language that had been used was particularly unsatisfactory.”

I would also add that I feel a certain sympathy for Logan in all of this.

He won’t emerge unscathed in all the fallout.

That’s caveated somewhat by the circumstances surrounding his subsequent sending off. He’s obviously no angel….same as the rest of us.

A correction. Tonev said he said to Logan: “get your hands off me”. He then denied adding on to that “black C***”.

The joke of a decision against Lenny for abusive language showed us what the sfa are all about….

The use of industrial language in football is and always has been ongoing.

Anyone watching the Everton QP game last night would have say Barton and neilbalancegiving each other verbals not once but twiçe during the match..

to my knowledge only lenny has been done for it….

  19. Hun skelper…i just think the first and most natural response to the allegetions would have been” he miss heard me, i said such and such”..and that is why it bothers me…

So, Tonev has ben found to be an unreliable witness by a wholly unreliable, dishonest, corrupt , biased and incompetent organisation ?

A scandalous decision because there isn’t evidence. Celtic must back the guy and play him when we want.

A lack of understanding permeates most of the comments on here regarding this subject.

    ——————————————————————————————————————-

Ernie, you did NOT answer my simple, albeit hypothetical, question – What if was you, or, yours?

  24. Its either take it to CAS or just shut up about it and move on. The more we go on about it the more oxygen we are giving it. If he did say it, its only a slip of the tongue offence that most of us have been guilty of from time to time, it doesn’t make him a racist. Its a blow for the player but not a huge blow for the Club. He was unlikely to feature a lot over the next 6 games and I doubt if he has a longer term future with the Club.

Not sure if Tonev himself has any avenue of getting redress through the legal system, if he has he should take it.

I trust our Club to come to a sensible mature decision whether to go to CAS or to leave the matter drop.

  25. Corkcelt-i disagree, we either back the guy 100%, and take it to CAS,or if we accept it, chase him back to Villa, can’t see a middle ground here mate.HH

  26. A young man man’s name branded with a racist slur forever on the evidence of “naw ah didnae, aye you did”. With him attempting to defending himself in a foreign language too.

    Staggering.

    Big Brother indeed.

There is a conspiracy theory you can take to the bank.

I hope Tonev really lawyers up with the aid of Celtic and the Bulgarian Football authorities. I’d spend every penny I had to clear my name.

  27. Captain Beefheart on

Common sense from Corkie. Indeed, even if he did use such foul language, it wouldn’t necessarily mean that he is a racist. That said, I wouldn’t use such language.

If the anti ‘racist’ brigade challenge Celtic, we must fight back.

  28. Why would Celtic need to speak to the SFA again ?

Celtic Football Club will be approaching the Scottish FA to seek to address this issue.

  29. Compare the Boyd case with the Tonev case:

How can the SFA fail to give a innocent/guilty verdict (not proven) when in possession of a referee’s report and TV pictures?

Yet they can give a guilty verdict where there is no evidence, save for “he says this/he says that”

    Bizarre!

  30. BTWCelticShow twitter

It’s days like today I’m glad I’m not on Twitter much anymore. How you can agree with the SFA with no evidence against a Celt is disgraceful
