History in a game

674

I know we met them in a European Cup semi-final in 1972, but the forthcoming tie against Inter Milan is all about the wonderful heritage we were gifted in 1967.  La Grande Inter, as Internazionale, then the greatest team Italy had known, had won two of the previous three European Cups and were controversially denied in the semi-final of the other.  They won three of the previous four Italian titles, denied the fourth on a play-off, and topped the table with two weeks of the Italian season to go.

They were an awesome team with gifted strikers but it was the defence which marked them out; this was a team who didn’t concede goals, when they took the lead, they kept it.

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill and Clark; Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, and Jock Stein, not only killed La Grande Inter, but did so, so comprehensively, they forced Inter, and the rest of the Italian game, to change their ways.  Catenaccio, the suffocating, ultra-defensive system, was finished.

For Europe, the consequences were profound.  Celtic, with their wave after wave of attack; 45 attempts on goal in a European final; were celebrated everywhere.  The drift towards caution stopped, teams realised the very best defensive sides could be beaten into submission by sheer talent.  In the two subsequent decades the dominant Latin countries of Italy, Spain and Portugal, who had won all previous European Cups, would win the trophy only once.

Football fans across the globe, not just Celtic fans, will want to be there when the teams meet in a game which represents History, not just our history, Europe’s History.

We’ll talk later today on moves being put on the SFA at the moment.  ‘Here we go again…….’

  1. The decision in itself looks racist, its as if they’re saying he’s eastern European so he must be guilty.

I’m not sure what else the lawyers could have done. They have to work within the procedural rules that are in place.

Still maintains its a sham. Without the ‘balance of probablity option’ the case is thrown out of court – one word against an other – as Ronnie keeps saying. With it – no problem – its a done deal – without the need to explain reason or logic.

  7. It’s a plain and simple case that there is no evidence, and that’s when it should have stopped, but they where in so mutch of a hurry to blacken the player and celtics name, they found him guilty and painted themselves into a corner, they are now in trouble and the only way they will get away with it is celtic letting them, and surely that won’t happen?

    Ernie,

If it was you, or one of yours, being convicted on the say so of one person – would you be so understanding?

The balance of probability is the only show in town, it’s the guilty verdict that appears to the layman, as wrong. The same balance of probability freed Monster Munch who was incredibly guilty ( as many posters have opined )

I’m sure they tried, even the weather got a mention in the panel decision.

They should have tried to concentrate on on what maybe Aleksandar really said that could have sounded, like …….you know what.

It’s not over by a long way, and I reckon it’ll get booted into touch at a higher tier. The stigma and Scottish anti Celtic spin, will be permanent.

Having only had a quick squint at sfa appeal decision.

If i go to an appeal with a person who has English as his second language I take an interpreter.

Basic error by Celtic lawyer and this can be noted in what sfa have said about Tonev as he hesitated.

2nd obvious flaw is that this can’t be decided using different rules than Boyd. Sfa are therefore using rules to suit themselves..

  13. I must admit, I thought without a card being pulled from the sleeve with a witness to backup the said allegation, that there would have been no case to answer…shocked at the outcome, to say the least.

That’s me fecked in work noo…I thought I could call them orange b******s and get way with it, if there was no witnesses :((

Tonev’s lawyer Liam O’Donnell made clear to tribunal that Tonev “spoke good English” but an interpreter was on hand just in case.

During the course of trying on the new footwear the auld fellah got all confused over which particular shoe went on which particular foot and asked mate mate:

Son. Am awfa confused. Fit fit, fit’s fit fit

    S’true story.

  16. blantyretim

Maybe I should have said ‘not required’ as the appellant “spoke good English”.

In something so serious as ruining a players career you use every option you have.?

If he wasn’t used to the full extent it was indeed an error, otherwise the player couldn’t have then been hung, for being ‘nervous and hesitant’

A lack of understanding permeates most of the comments on here regarding this subject.

  21. Celtic fans would be appalled if one of our players did racially abuse an opponent. It seems very harsh to judge a person on the uncorroborated say so of an opponent during a keenly contested game.

I think Celtic must appeal this decision to a higher tribunal. It couldn’t possibly be the case that the SFA are being “even handed” following their decision to go after MASH and sevco. Maybe I’m just paranoid.

  22. The Tracing Agent twitter.

The fact that we have fans who choose to believe the @ScottishFA over any of our players is enough to make my stomach turn.

Spot on but I’m afraid when you allow a corrupt governing body to bend rule after rule to help 1 club & other clubs remain silent then this is the problems you face.

  25. Truly appalled at this verdict. How someone whose native language is not English can be found guilty because the native speaker appeared more credible as he was less hesitant in his answers, imo, beggars belief. If truth be told, it frightens me that any authority in Scotland can come to such a conclusion on such a basis. Surely the judgement is necessarily racist.

If the level of understanding by most on here is not sufficiently high for you, why don’t you take your superior smug posterior elsewhere?

  27. Surely the first question our management would ask Tonev is” so what did you say?”…if anyone has read what he says he said i would like to know what it was…
