Hottest ticket in management lurches in the wrong direction

831

Right now our former captain, Paul Lambert, is one of the hottest tickets in football management so it’s no surprised that Norwich City have been unable to hold onto him.  Inside three years he transformed the club from one that lost 1-7 to Colchester United (then managed by Paul) to one of the most improved teams in Europe, earning two consecutive promotions and a mid-table finish in the FA Premier League.

If Lambert ended up at Liverpool, or even Chelsea, you would not have been surprised.  Instead, he’s set to go to Aston Villa.  During their Martin O’Neill era Villa splurged cash they ultimately realised they couldn’t afford.  Martin walked out days before the start of the season in August 2010.  Since then they pitched Gerard Houllier at the job before poaching Alex McLeish from relegated city rivals Birmingham.

In short, Villa looks like a club without the vision to build stable progress.  Unlike Norwich, who seem to know exactly what they are doing.  They even coped with the loss of Neil Doncaster, who left the club a few months before the arrival of Lambert.

Norwich City is the better job.

I’m on Radio Scotland with Jim Spence around 16:15 today, talking about social media and football, square sliced, the price of milk and lawn care.

  1. Disagree Paul67

Paul L is ambitious, wants a top job, wants to be continually improving his team. How could he continue to improve Norwich? they were fighting above their weight this season.

Villa have under performed for many years with the possible exception of MON, even then for the amount they spen it is questionable how well they done relatively.

Paul L could go in there, take them to top half without spending a massive amount of cash and be a hero. He is there as a stepping stone to something bigger. I understand you saying the NC job is better and everything about NC seems more appealing to us, but PL is trying to get to the top of his career, to achieve as much as he can, he couldn’t improve much more at NC and therefore a real danger that the more likely way was down.

I believe it was a wise move by Paul for HIS career and he will do well and go on to better things in a couple of years. I Wish him well!

  6. Being a long time lurker, and prompted by the recent wave of 1967 nostalgia and of course the unfolding and incredulous RFCIA debacle, I thought to take advantage of a ‘quiet news day’ for my inaugural post.

First and foremost I must congratulate Paul67 for his informative, incisive and courageous leadership in bringing recent events into focus for the CQN family. No praise is high enough for the selfless work that you do on our behalf.

And of course the amazing high calibre posts of a plethora of CQN contributors, too many to list here (we all know who they are). Coupled with the sterling work done by Phil, Paul, RTC and other ‘internet bampots’, more than once I have been ‘astounded of forehead’ (apologies for the plagiarism). And let me not forget the humorous and witty posters. I have regularly challenged the effectiveness of my underwear and the integrity of post operative staples! Thanks one and all!

Back to the nostalgia, I wonder if fellow CQNers, possibly of my vintage, could help out with any feedback for the following quest. About 2/3 years ago, an article appeared on CQN which mentioned The Shamrock magazine, and I seem to remember an input from NotTheView, which praised its hard hitting style which was ahead of its time (early 60s) in its criticism of the SFA and the then CFC board. I have recently rediscovered the following link which may be informative:

    The Shamrock magazine

The Shamrock was instrumental in my first attendance at Celtic matches as a young boy. It reminded me of when, as a young boy, I used to visit my uncle John Doogan’s house in Gilmerton, Edinburgh on a Friday evening to help put the magazine together by cranking the handle on the printing machine, and by folding and stapling the pages into the green covers, as Uncle John was sometimes finishing articles on his typewriter on the evening. On a Saturday, it was a train to Glasgow, arriving at the ground with an armful of Shamrocks and Celtic pens for the faithful.

After visiting Uncle John’s grave in Annagry, Donegal (he passed away in 1979), I wondered what he would make of CQN. I’m pretty sure he would be an avid and vociferous contributor. I would be very interested in finding any information relating to personal or library collections I could access (I seem to recall they are out there somewhere), as it must be around 50 years since the Shamrock was launched.

It is daunting to post amongst such erudite and humorous fellow ‘bampots’, but I will try not to be euphemistic or periphrastic, to circumlocute or obfuscate, but to be concise and to the point !

Ive got to take my hat off to Gordon Smith.

The guy IMHO was hopelessly out of his depth, at both SFA and Rankers yet he still manages to land himself jobs with very healthy 6 figure salaries.

Some of the drivel he comes out with really does beggar belief, and aside from his ill founded and naive comments about schooling, to be able to consistently spout garbage upon garbage, and still find an outlet for his drivel in the press , leaves me with a warped sense of admiration for the man

Lambert is moving at the right time. Whether he’s going to the right club is a diifferent matter. The one thing any manager needs is time. Ferguson & Wenger have both had substantial ‘dry spells’ but overall have been very good for the clubs they manage. Chelsea may have won the big cup but the next manager has a major rebuilding job, Chelsea fans may find it difficult to accept a year with no trophies. Liverpool are a basket case. They have no forward plan, no coherent system and no set team. Tottenham will do the usual ‘Arry’s trajectory’ ie, flatter to deceive early on and disappear to mid-table for Christmas. Newcastle will struggle to hold on to the players who made them successful last year. City will continue to put a distance between themselves and the rest by buying their way to another title. Big Sam will relegate West Ham and still be in the frame for the England job.

The only interesting thing in the yawn-fest that is the EPL is , where will Davy Moyes end up?

  16. The rfcia slo-mo collapse is overshadowing everything.

However, I cannae remember exactly where on here yesterday, but someone came up with the wild idea that Neil Lennon might be going to Norwich….has he committed to us yet,in a signed contract kinda way? What with Paul Lambert being linked to Villa, where MON eventually got scunnered,it’s becoming like a Celtic ‘musical chairs’.

At least the one thing all these clubs (Sunderland, too) have in common, apart from the Celtic connection, are passionate fans…unlike some of the more stratospheric EPL outfits whose fans are the ‘only if they’re winning variety’.

Whit the divil does this mean (from the article posted above)

…. suspension would create problems as Rangers’ fixtures during their ‘ban’ would result in their opponents being awarded three points.

That would lead to accusations of unfairness from the clubs who would play Rangers when their suspension was lifted, with more chaos inevitable..

What? Are they considering a suspension for PART of a season? How can they possibly do that? For exactly the reasons given above a part season ban or suspension is absurd.__________________________

    Spot on,Sparkleghirl.

Imagine us not playing them & being awarded a 3-0 win,.. when if we had played them we would have taken 7 or 8 off them.

    Completely unfair.

Paul’s success with Norwich was the ability to produce above average performances from players who individually would not be regarded as themselves above average but who as a unit performed admirably. That trait is what will have attracted Villa who have realised by now that simply throwing money at the situation as they did initially with Martin O’Neill is pointless when others have so much more to play with. If Paul shows the same ability with Aston Villa as he has done with Norwich he will become a legend in the Midlands where Villa have long underperformed their potential.Norwich will continue to be what they have always been. An excellent club who will flicker but never sparkle whilst Villa have the ability to be greater than their recent past. In terms of the better job there is no competition. For Paul with either its a long way from Livingston.

  25. Paul67,

I guess you are already aware of what I’m about to say, but I’m always in favour of stating the obvious rather than not, and then wish I had later.
