How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  2. The last thing any good manager would do is adjust our team to cope with sevco.

This is the slowest, least technical, team to come out of Ibrox, in my lifetime, simply put they are mince. That is not to say an upset can’t happen, but the chances are slim.

As they are in Alloa’s league i get a lot of info, as my old da is on the Alloa staff and nearly came to blows with McDowell, but that’s another story.

Since Ally left there has been minimal changes, it’s still the same second phase football, that went out with the bows and arrows. The only personnel change will be Hutton for Black, the same team will play that started against Hearts, barring injuries. The only other change they have made is to play slightly and i mean slightly more football.

The only problem is they are incapable to do it, they are that bad and would be better sticking to their getting in the box as early as possible, which they might return to as they know not to play too much football against us.

They will play 4 1 4 1, with daly up front, trying to win free kicks, but given Celtic’s dominance, Miller who is done by the way and offers nothing, will struggle to support.

Watch them play for corners, and commit persistant fouls that don’t warrant booking’s, basically, totally spoiling tacticts, plus diving in or around penalty box.

The bus will be parked, therefore, Celtic must improve their shot’s on target ratio from Saturday and play at a high tempo especially when they move forward.

Hampden’s open spaces will suit Celtic and if Forrest is fit might be worth a shout.

Early goal it should be 3 or 4.

  7. The number of individuals who subscribed to fund the ‘Ad’ (as long as it was more than one) is academic.

The ‘Ad’ served its purpose. Actually, post the ‘Ad’ and the reaction to it, I’d say the ‘Ad’ more than served its purpose.

Certainly put a few noses out of joint. And I’m sure each and every one of you has taken note of the fact that not a single power, authority, hack or lawyer has gone on record to refute any point made in the ‘Ad’.

Actually if you fancied it we could catch a game at Spurs or West Ham, I like going there to pass an afternoon.

  8. Cultsbhoy,

Congrats on the success of your team, that’s a very successful season at school level if ever I’ve seen one! I’m sure more success awaits them in the future.

I probably know of your brother, if not by name then by face at least, Alford is a great wee town (I taught there as a student).

    Small world! :0)

Regards your team for Sunday, the only change I would make is Stokes for Forrest (for first 60-65 mins anyway). I think Stokes has a wee bit of guile and works very well with Izzy down the left. He also seems to be a lot fitter and works harder than he used to, credit to Ronny and JC I think for that. Bring on Forrest in the 2nd half when they start to tire would be my preference.

    Anyway, nice chattin with you!

  9. Also, if I remember correctly, was our last match at Hampden not the 3-0 cup final against Hibs? Stokes had one of his best games for the club and put in some great crosses, allowing Hooper to get his double. Similar to the type of cross he put in for Griffiths last Wednesday against Motherwell. Hopefully he produces a similar style of performance (if selected) on Sunday!

    CELTIC VERSUS A NEW CLUB?

As Celtic prepare to meet Rangers in the Scottish Communities League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park on Sunday 1st February the “debate” over whether they will be facing a new club has reached fever pitch but, is a club merely a legal entity with a company number and shares or is it much, much more than that?

A group of Celtic supporters felt it necessary to take out a full page advert in a national newspaper to clarify their feelings in the lead up to the game. Whether you agree or disagree with this course of action the fact that footballs fans felt it necessary to take this step shows how murky the whole situation is. I would imagine that legal minds poured over the advert before it was allowed to be published, the facts have been laid out in black and white proving that the team playing at Ibrox are in fact a “new club” so you would have to be a combination of Johnnie Cochran and a complete madman to attempt argue the case however, even though I agree with the content of the advert, I feel it was a completely pointless exercise.

The “new club” argument has been raging since Charles Green came on the scene and I doubt it will ever go away. The advert merely reiterated what pretty much every fan of every club outwith Rangers already knew and its highly unlikely that it did anything to change the mind of any Rangers fan who doesn’t buy into the “new club” argument. What I think we can all agree on is that football is about more than assets, shares and balance sheets, well to true fans at least!

Regardless of what happened at Ibrox over the last few years there is a club wearing the Rangers colours and club crest playing from there. I am certain the vast majority of Celtic fans take an interest in what is happening to that club and that is where the “new club” argument is very easily forgotten. As a Celtic fan I hold my hands up and say that I am truly enjoying the utter shambles at Ibrox and while I accept they are a new legal entity the desire to see them get beat on the pitch and make a complete mess of pretty much everything is almost the same as it was pre 2012, I must stress almost the same.

What is very different is, at this moment in time, I do not feel that same passion I had leading up to a Glasgow Derby as I did for the games pre 2012. I have had the “pleasure” of watching Celtic v Rangers at Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden as well as countless times on TV and no matter the form, league positions or line ups the passion for these games was indescribable. I’ve felt the despair of seeing my team losing at home as well the elation of winning at Ibrox or lifting the cup at Hampden after beating our old foe, nothing, not even the best (or worst) Champions League games came close to those feelings.

Previously the build up to these games was intense for days, weeks even, but with the League Cup semi-final less than a week away I’m not even really looking forward to the game let alone getting hyped up for it. I didn’t attempt to get a ticket for the game and probably wont go out to watch it as I have a feeling that what happens on the field will be pretty much insignificant. Pre 2012 every single Celtic v Rangers game meant something, playing for titles, cups or just bragging rights but this one just doesn’t seem to have the same “pull”. The Scottish media will try everything they can to build this game up and if that means printing things or making statements that will wind up one, or both, sets of fans that’s exactly what they’ll do. They need to sell papers or get viewers/listeners so we shouldn’t expect any different.

Celtic are the top team in Scotland and are playing a team who are in complete disarray and a division below them, it should be a relatively easy game for Celtic but this game will be hyped more than pretty much any other in the history of Scottish football and the Celtic players and management will be under a level of pressure that will be completely exaggerated until the game kicks off, do Celtic have the players who can handle that and come through? I think so and my god I hope so.

I was chatting to a Rangers supporting friend recently about one of the many crazy episodes featuring Rangers, I can’t quite remember if it was about shares being issued, a boardroom battle, security over a stadium or a protest but whatever it was it resulted in me saying to him “remember when we just talked about football?” and it pretty much brought things into perspective. I suffered through the 90’s and watched the Murray machine attempt to destroy the rest of Scottish football which has massively contributed to my enjoyment of watching the downfall of his empire, I’ve seen my own club on the brink of oblivion only to be saved by the commitment of its fans and some determined businessmen, I’ve seen what I consider cheating of the highest order be played down by the people who are supposed to run our game and I also think the current SFA set up is completely compromised due to the incumbent President however despite all of that I’m a football fan, at the end of the day I just want to watch the game and see my team win.

I’ll have to admit I’m becoming tired of the “new club” argument, for Rangers fans they’re not a “new club”, and, to be honest, I understand why they feel that way, their football club is an emotional and spiritual connection and, while pretty much everything they stand for is the antithesis of what I believe, I know what it feels like to have a football club at your core, I’m certain there is no football fan anywhere in the world who bought a season ticket to support a holding company. My brain is also hurting trying to figure out what is actually happening at Ibrox, there are so many ifs, buts and maybes that it is now just far too complicated to attempt to keep up with so I’m going to try to ignore the boardroom wrangles and arguments as much as possible (although I’ll still laugh as they stumble from one disaster to another).

As the semi-final looms closer will I be any more excited about it than I would for a game against Aberdeen, Thistle, Hearts or Falkirk? Right now it doesn’t look like it but on game day I hope that changes. I’ll see that badge, the colours and those fans and I hope that it ignites that desire to want to beat this Rangers as much as I ever did their predecessors. Football fans thrive on rivalry and while I accept that so, so much has changed I want the feelings on the day of a Glasgow Derby to be very much the same. They may be a “new club” but can still be our biggest rival!

    Summa

  11. Even to me this reads as being stitched £10m Credit Facility and associated transfer of 26% of Rangers Retail Limited

The Board of Rangers announces that Rangers Football Club Limited (“the Club”) has entered in to agreements with SportsDirect.com Retail Limited and associated companies (“SD”), to provide a long term on-going credit facility of up to £10m (the “Facility”).

The Company’s financial condition has been perilous for a number of months exacerbated by lower than expected match attendances. The Directors have implemented a cost cutting program with which they have made significant progress. There is however an immediate need for a substantial injection of capital, and the Directors have considered a number of options. The terms negotiated with SD (which are reversible in respect of the Facility) represent the optimum combination of quantum and duration of funding, allowing the Company time to arrange permanent capital which can be used for strengthening the playing squad.

The Facility is structured in two separate interest free tranches. GBP 5million will be available immediately for working capital purposes and for the repayment of the credit facilities with MASH Holdings Limited which was entered into on 27 October 2014. All rights and security associated with the MASH facility will be cancelled.

The Club will transfer 26% of the share capital in Rangers Retail Limited (“RRL”) to SD for the duration of the Facility (the “Transfer”), which will be transferred back, at no cost, upon repayment of all outstanding sums owed by Rangers and its subsidiaries to SD. There is no specified repayment period for the first tranche of the Facility.

The Facility is to be secured by (1) a floating charge over the Club’s assets and (2) fixed charges over Murray Park, Edmiston House, Albion Car Park, and the Club’s registered trademarks. None of the security that is being given to SD covers Ibrox Stadium, which is specifically excluded and remains in the full ownership of the Club, free from any security. SD will also have the right to nominate two directors to the board of Rangers for the duration of the Facility, any such nomination will be subject to regulatory consent pursuant to the AIM Rules and other regulatory bodies. If the entire sum drawn down is repaid, the Facility will be deemed to be terminated, all security will be released, the 26% of RRL will revert to the Company and all rights of SD to nominate Directors to the Board of the Company will cease.

The second tranche of GBP5 million, which repayable 5 years after drawdown, will be used, if required, for working capital purposes and is subject to due diligence by SD prior to drawn down.

The Company has also agreed that from the 2017/8 season, for the duration of the Facility, any future shirt sponsorship proceeds will be for the benefit of RRL.

RRL will declare a dividend of a total of GBP 1,610,000 prior to the Transfer. The Club will use the proceeds of its share of this dividend, inter alia, to repay sums owing to SD in respect of the cessation of onerous leases on unprofitable stores entered into by a previous Rangers management team.

RRL is a joint venture between the Club and SD whose business is selling merchandise both on-line and in stores. In the period ending 27 April 2014, RRL made a profit before tax of GBP 1,172,893.

SD is a Related Party under the AIM Rules and accordingly the Facility is a Related Party Transaction pursuant to AIM Rule 13. The Independent Directors, consider, having consulted with WH Ireland its nominated adviser, that the terms of the Facility are fair and reasonable insofar as shareholders of the Company are concerned.

The Directors would like to thank all the Rangers Stakeholders who showed an interest in helping the Company.

Commenting on the Facility, David Somers said: ” The Board has sought for some time to establish a long term funding solution for the Company in order to create a platform of stability to build for the future. This Facility begins this process and we very much hope that it will be augmented with further permanent capital in due course. In addition, the executive team have made strides in addressing the cost base of the Company in order to improve our financial condition and working capital profile. We very much hope that we can now move away from having to seek short term funding solutions and can focus our efforts towards investing in the first team playing squad, a return to profitability and to re-establishing Rangers in the top league in Scottish Football and in due course, to European competition. The Board now calls upon all shareholders to rally together to achieve this goal.”

  12. Good morning CQNers,

The Scottish msm and football pundits who, to a man/woman, have shied away from challenging the facts outlined in the Celtic Supporters (indeterminate number) would, in my book, suggest the advert has achieved at least one of the aims I was looking forward to.

  13. Auldheid

    Thanks for your response.

    A very reasoned post.

I guess we never consider the ‘ other side’ and their point of view.

I guess if I were a Sevconian ( I’ve just came out in a rash typing that) I would probably cling to any fable to support the same club theory and that there had been no systematic cheating.

But I aint, I followed Celtic in the cheating years and am angry that I was witnessing a rigged game.

That me and fellow supporters who invested emotionally as well as financially were ripped off is a bitter pill , made even harder to swallow by their incredible denial .

Maybe if the showed an ounce of humility and regret things could move on .

The peepul unfortunately don’t do humility or regret

  14. Summa,

The last line sums it up.

They are a new club and they are far from our biggest rival.

No-one fears the footballing team, The Rangers, not Alloa, Raith etc, etc.

The omni shambles that is The Rangers 2012 is a vastly different beast from what was Rangers 1872.

We were right to respect the might of the former club.

What has this new club achieved to earn our respect as our greatest rivals?

Precisely nothing. It is a myth.

They are a poor imitation of the original that cannot even win the really wee diddy cup, Petrofac.

They deserve to be treated as such.

They are not our greatest rivals at present and do not look, from this vantage point, to be becoming so, any time soon.

Sorry, Summa, my friend, sometimes you just have let go.

Efe may be a squad player at the moment, but I reckon he’ll be a first pick if and when we lose Denayer and van Dijk.

If we have lost the three of them by the time of the qualifiers,we will be in real bother.

  20. I’m mindful of last Saturday’s laboured performance against Ross County on what was a poor pitch surface, hopefully the Hampden ground staff will provide a level playing field for the Sunday’s game following Saturday’s other semi final.

  21. I caught bit and pieces of both Radio Scotland and Clyde Super Scoreboard last night and my worst fears have been realised. The Big Lie is being promoted by our national broadcasters as gospel truth and any dissenters are being treated as unhinged zealots. Quite frankly, I am already sick to the back teeth of the build up to the “Return of the Old Firm” and I will have no part in it which includes watching this damned football match. My enthusiasm for all things Scottish Football diminishes with every passing day as it plummets to the depths of World Wide Entertainment (WWE) wrestling.

Can I just give one more analogy?

David Cameron is the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

I do not like this fact but I have to accept the truth in it.

I would look extremely stupid trying to deny the self evident truth that Cameron is the Prime Minister.

Rangers 2012 are a new club.

Rangers fans do not like the fact SO have chosen NOT to accept the truth of it.

Am I still the stupid one?

Agree with you about getting rid of the hatred.

Pointing out truth is a different animal altogether though.

    Hope you are well.
