I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke. One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.
Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact. Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches. As an operator, he is still worth studying. Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.
Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000. It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.
There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice). He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game. The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Re. Sunday’s game, as someone said earlier, the opposition (all 12 of them) will be trying their best to get our players sent off. One can’t really ask our ‘experienced’ players to alert the newbies to this danger because we’ve no ‘experience’ of playing this club :-) But a bit of metal preparation for the inevitable aggro – there’s no need for any of our players, newbies especially, to prove their metal by retaliating – is advisable. If we stay calm and play like we can, we’ll be fine.

Gives them £5m, takes £3m back, fixed charges over nearly all the assets except Ibrox, 26% of their retail and gets 2 more of his own directors. Not bad for enough money to get them to the start of March. The next £5m gets him all the future shirt sponsorship proceeds, a nice wee dividend and a payoff for the onerous stores. And all that only gets them to season ticket time at best.
They still spend more than they bring in, have no real line of credit and most of their assets will be tapped. You know, I’m starting to think this might not end well for them.

A very important day indeed. I’ve never been to Auschwitz but I visited Dachau and the key message was the same: “Never forget, never again”.
Is it true that Putin was not invited this year? If true, I think that’s a backwards step for everyone. Although I understand he would not have gone if invited.
Zbyszek, it’s good that the anniversary is widely being observed here in Germany too. Saw a documentary recently about the new ‘Hitchcock’ footage of the Holocaust. Includes ghastly scenes of Belsen in particular that I’ll never forget. Also an interview with one Red Army officer who was amongst first to arrive at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He broke down in tears as he recounted what he saw.

Absolutely fascinating and disgusting in equal measures. It made my blood run cold on a few occasions.
