Huge decision ahead for Neil Lennon

833

When they dispensed with Unai Emeri last weekend, Spartak Moscow brought to an end an experiment to bring sophistication to their team.  New caretaker manager, Valeriy Karpin, was manager immediately before Emeri, was also the man who appointed Emeri and stood over him as general manager of the club since moving from the dugout in the summer.

Karpin relies more on his strong, authoritative, personality than tactical innovation, which is likely to mean we face a more disciplined team in Glasgow next week that we faced in Moscow – there will be no brothel at the back.

My main concern is that the Kilmarnock/St Johnstone/Inverness tactics of defending solidly and taking their chances when going forward is perfectly suited for Karpin’s Spartak.  Against Benfica and Barcelona at home, Neil Lennon played it tight and incredibly tight respectively, which proved to be excellent decisions.  He has a huge call to make against Spartak, playing an adventurous game could leave us exposed.

This result is not to be taken for granted.

CQN Annual – perfect Christmas present

It was some comfort to see Celtic back on form last night, especially down the flanks, which were crucial in Moscow and could prove to be so again next week.  Hopefully the knocks and strains which have hampered the squad in recent weeks are beginning to fade ahead of our Christmas Cup Final.

Well done to Lenny and the bhoys last night ,clinical with our finishing and big FF in great form the mini’s undoubtedly raised their game and commitment against us, as did the weasel in the black.

I must admit the site of their fans skulking away ,faces tripping them really made my night and talking of faces tripping them ,I wonder how Craigens feeling today

Fair point but when the wings are struggling I think the defensive midfeilders hang back rather than push forward. Not really attacking minded.

Aye, the CL counter attacking cautious play might be hard to turn around in the SPL especially when the team are not motivated, still they should be much better than they way they hae been playing.

Heard somebody say the other day all these shop window players look forward to the CL as thats where they can make their name, after that that probably want to take it easy til the next one, part and parcel of the way we are asset managing/Moneyballing/Lyon’ing/Porto’ing, Im dee lighted with what we are doing in that but needs better managment game to game.

  9. EN – I think there is a malaise about the squad in the league which is due to the CL in one way or another.

In the league I think we are basically experiencing what we did to Barca. We struggle to break down highly motivated teams who are set up defensively and are prepared to break quickly.

A combination of a higher tempo (like last night) or a more creative midfielder (unlikely/McGeough) would help at home against these tactics but I genuinely think that we will soon go on a run which will take us well clear in the league.

I am more concerned that we now try and turn the league form around with just one game to get through in the CL. Eye off the ball and all that.

Beat Sparta and the rest will fall into place.

I can’t believe that I sound like such a bore, Rascar probably can’t believe it’s the same guy he knows saying this but it’s how I feel. I would rather ‘The wearing of the Green’ since it still gets us a kicking on the streets.

  11. Celebrating 140 years ? Whit ?

Bit like having a birthday party for a deid person, and err, by my reckoning six months after the date of their actual birthday – weird.

Anyway if they want to celebrate 140 years, of bigoted signing policies which were followed by a seamless transition into giving players loans instead of wages which would deny great britain of Tax/NI etc., let them crack-on. Nothing to do with our 125 years celebrations or the kiddy-on history purchase I’m sure.

No doubt they’ll get one of the European giants along to the party for the ‘birthday’ match, just to show everyone just how far they’ve come.

Agree, unmotivated players against teams motivated to play us but the players should be motivated to win or keep a place as well as by management.

The fear is turning in an SPL performance in the CL, hopefully the Benfica one was that, folk on the excellent Tempory Stand podcast suggested a lot of players looked tired in Lisbon, they did now I think about it, doesnt say much for the rotation/resting of players in the SPL that seems to go on.

Struggled to break down a Benfica team who were happy with a point at Celtic Park, lack of creativity could pay in this game.

  18. I’ve been slightly peeved by the slip ups in the SPL but have never been worried. As long as we were doing well in the CL and there or thereabouts in the SPL was fine. Perversely this year the Huns wanted us to win the Title by 40plus points so they could say there is no real SPL without them. The way the SPL is shaping up is driving them mad, all supporters are enjoying it and they are not missed in the slightest. They are also thinking “If only” they got their CVA and held on to their squad they would be in a position to take advantage of our slip ups, win the Title, be debt free and really rub our faces in it. I’m not greedy, I really don’t want us to win every match in Scotland, The Treble and a Champions League quarter final place will do me fine for this season. NoArmeggodoncsc. .

I know it’s not for me, why can’t all the fans groups get together discuss/debate/vote and whatever they decide I would wholeheartedly support, it’s they’re choice! I know what I would like it to be, but it’s no longer my call as I don’t go to away games anymore, not because of the songs by the way!!

  24. EN -The fear is turning in an SPL performance in the CL,

    Agreed.

I don’t think we are capable of a sustained two-pronged attack. League form will pick up properly when the CL is over. The players know they dont’t have to peak in the league every week and the displays show that. This year we can drop more points and still win the league. They’re geared up for a shot at Europe.

Fully understand that attitude as well, despite the poor performance at the weekend.

    Human nature and all that.

I have a proposal for you. Send me a box of your annuals, we sell them to our club members or any other Celts in the Swindon area, which will save on the postage and packing cost of £3.50. If there’s room for a little commission to help club funds :-)) that would be even better.

Just so you know, I have already bought the annual, which is fantastic and would like to help get it out there. I see it is now available on Amazon but think this may be a more beneficial way for you to sell, reducing the cost to the buyer and no sellers fee !!.
