Ibrox fixture bonus for Celtic

61

A home start against Ross County on 5 August was not the most notable item on the fixture list, issued this morning.  We visit Ibrox on Sunday 3 September, just four days after the Champions League playoff round concludes.  If Newco are still in the competition, they will have to throw everything at their midweek European games.  As champions, Celtic will be able to rest in the week leading up to the game.

There is a lot of work ahead of then for both teams to be ready, but this is an ideal date to visit Ibrox.  Facing a taxed squad (insert your own joke here) that may well have suffered European elimination gives us the opportunity to stamp our authority on last season’s runners up.

The run towards the winter break looks like a pivotal time of the season.  We have seven league games in December as well as the final Champions League group stage game.  The month ends with the visit of Newco on 30 December.  Three days later we face what could be a tricky visit to St Mirren, our last game before the break.

We need to talk about Jota, so there will be another blog later today.

  1. Not overly sure there’s any evidence for these post-Euro matches favouring anybody in the past.

Bit of a red herring. We’ll go there with a pit full of bigots convinced they have the better of us.

That can wait. Getting the squad finely tuned for that game will be more pivotal. Play our best 11 and we win.

  2. We are in a league which does not generate good TV revenues.

    Until we change this .

We will be pillaged by richer leagues for our better players .

This constant churn means that building a team over a period of years is very unlikely to happen .

It also means that every two seasons we are in a rebuild situation .

We should never be complacent that the hun can’t catch us .

The last 2 seasons have proven that commanding title wins can be overcome within 2 transfer windows.

We must keep Kyogo if at all possible.

  3. Yep the Ibrox date stood out as favouring us, provided of course the huns aren’t already eliminated from the CL.

On Jota, very simply, we’d be selling him cheap at €25 million. This would be on the back of underwhelming sales of JJ and GG. We need to be making more on these sales. Jota should be breaking our Club record fee.

  4. Since when has it become legal that an agent can set up deals for managers players with clubs offering more unless the present employer is aware of the move and has given consent for the discussions to take place, looks like players won’t spend any more than 2 years with Celtic unless they have not impressed or the player sees his long term future with us.

  5. Busy busy day for our esteemed host.

Given some health issues I may be scrounging a ticket for the Dundee game.

  7. TinyTim,

There’s no bigger TV deal coming that can bridge the gap. The local product isn’t attractive enough.

Trading players is a strategy we can control and we just need to get better at it. More Jotas, less Soros. Nobody is irreplaceble.

Kyogo is at the height of his powers now at 28. Would make sense to sell him this summer, use the cash to get a younger model.

Conservatively trading 3 first teamers at £25m each summer (plus others) could have our revenue up at £140m without compromising Beale’s poundshop galacticos.

As recently as 2021/22 the Huns got beaten away to Dundee United in the second game of the season the weekend after Malmo beat them in Sweden.

Same season we got beaten at Hearts the weekend after we went out to Midtjylland, although that could also be put down to having half a team at that stage of the season

There’s nothing special about Celtic when it comes to the market

We can get what the market pays, sometimes a little more

The skill is in understanding the market and using it to your advantage, not trying to continually beat it.

That’s what the Huns did with fatty, their exceptionalism led them to believe they could get more for him and they ended up with worse than nothing – a player who wasnt interested in his last season, cost them a years wages and left for free.

  11. I could have picked the fixtures …who needs a computer?!!!…if anyone thinks these fixtures help celtic they’re not paying close attention

I see the EFL are pushing for a 25% trickle down from the PL..15% ATM…..if this goes ahead it could finish Scottish football off …hearts hibs Aberdeen would be competing with league 2 teams in terms of wages …possibly lower ….something needs to be done….God knows what

Agreed, the worst home top ever. There were some truly awful away strips over the years (90-92 especially) but usually the home top is OK.

  14. Jota has a long contract with Celtic, so surely Celtic can just slap a £50M price tag on him and refuse to sell for less?

If we lose Jota and (likely) Abada, and Postecoglou’s departure causes our Japanese players to start looking for a move, we’re going to be in a worse position than we were before AP arrived!

And this assumes that Oh doesn’t follow any Japanese exodus and CCV and O’Riley aren’t tempted by the £££ offered by the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth.

BR is potentially going to have to do some magic in the transfer market in the next few weeks if we are going to have a realistic chance of defending our title and taking even a point in the CL!

  15. We’re in a difficult position with Jota, if reports are true

The wages he’s supposedly been offered would turn anyone’s head. If he’s agreed to go and we refuse his move because the fee isn’t high enough we’ll have a player on our hands who could quite right say we’ve ruined his chances of making life changing money. A very unhappy player

Normally the wages match the fee, they’ll be factored into the overall cost to the buying club, but in this case the Saudis could quite easily lowball us knowing that the wages they’re offering won’t be turned down by the player and won’t get near to breaking their wage structure

People like them understand only money. Just because they have bundles of it doesn’t mean they’re going to overpay fir a player who’s already 100% committed to a move

Co.paring us to the huns as regards sales is like saying we couldn’t spend more because look what happened to rangers. I don’t buy the direct comparisons.

We’re within our rights to place valuations on our players and shouldn’t be citing ‘the market’ to justify accepting the first bids on our top players.

These are professional footballers, not Ange’s long term drinking buddies. We’re in a good place. Personally they’ll be delighted in having a manager who will make them better.

If they have had enough of Ross County away then we are in a strong position to demand top dollar and replace with better.

Good wage + 60k fans + ECL appearances isn’t to be sniffed at.

    Ibrox fixture?

First off – it’s about what we do. By far the most important factor.

If we are talking about opportune fixture scheduling I don’t see any great benefit at all with this date.

The week before would have been much better as it would have presented a genuine dilemma about prioritisation for Sevco.

  21. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Plus … Footballers can handle two games a week no bother one month into the season.

It’s only four or five months in it becomes a problem.

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Genuine question

Why are there no SPFL fixtures on the weekends of 19 August and 09 September?

  23. Big Wavy, I hope so. But I just fear the worst and hope things turn out better. As long as we don’t go back to passing the ball from side to side trying to bore the opposition defence to sleep! Stick with the indoor 6-a-side style slick pass & move in attack and we should be ok.

Co.paring us to the huns as regards sales is like saying we couldn’t spend more because look what happened to rangers. I don’t buy the direct comparisons.

No it isn’t. It’s two different discussions. Fatty is the perfect example of not selling because your valuation is too high for the market and ending up with nothing. It’s about thinking we “should” be getting more than what people are prepared to pay.

We’re not special. We can’t demand other clubs pay more than they’re willing to pay. They’re exactly the same as us, they identify a player have an evaluation they won’t go above and then walk away if the price is too high.

    Why are we any different?

“We’re within our rights to place valuations on our players and shouldn’t be citing ‘the market’ to justify accepting the first bids on our top players.”

You can’t continually beat the market. Our valuations mean nothing if people won’t pay. And we don’t ever accept the first bid. I don’t know you know we do

The business we did with Jura and Giako showed just how smart we are. We identified players who were undervalued, got great service out of them, sold them for a profit when they wanted away and bought younger potentially better players to replace them for much less than the fees we were paid

  26. BIGCHIPSUK on 30TH JUNE 2023 10:34 AM

I hear you. I do also think there were signs that Angeball was petering out too, and dreaded 3rd season Ange could be coming down the tracks.

We have a terrific coach (bit of an eijit mind), who will freshen things up, make us more robust at the back and if we get back to invincibles season, I’ll be happy.

We’ve caught the Huns off-guard and don’t let them tell you otherwise. They were planning for season 3 Ange. Serious cash, Lawell Jnr and a decent scouting system (not Congerton) and I think we’ll be happy bunnies end of summer.

I think also we’ll smash the huns FIVE in September as a result.

  31. the celtic top will sell because all the spoilt weans have to have everything immediately, i would go as far as say they could add wee red lions on it and it will still sell.
