Iceland calls

Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the Champions League second qualifying round with the first leg taking place on either 15or 16 July.  Celtic are provisionally at home for the first let – but don’t book your flights until arrangements have been confirmed.

KR beat Glentoran 3-0 on aggregate in last season’s Europa League qualifying campaign before losing 1-3 home and away to Standard Liege.  The Icelandic season continues throughout the summer, KR played a league game yesterday and have another three competitive games before meeting Celtic.  Nine games into the league campaign they are three points off the pace.

From what I can tell, it looks like they have a grass pitch at their 3300 capacity stadium, which removes the big complaint from last season’s qualifiers.

This is a good tie for Celtic, who will be physically stretched by a mid-season team, but we’ll be strong favourites.

We were last in competitive action in Iceland against Valur in 1975, when a 0-2 win out there preceded a 7-0 victory at Celtic Park.

Lots of red herring in Iceland; and they’re not sharin’ them with anybody.

My preference for an environment in which Celtic will prosper is a European League.

That would negate the need for a UK league and not affect Celtic’s chances of being part of such should independence happen.

Independence, as things stand will not benefit Celtic or Scottish football. It will keep us in the same small pot and naturally constrict growth.

At this point I have to admit being heavily influenced by the evidence ( not suspicion) of very one sided governance in football and the current government and judicial systems support of it.

It’s not the football per se but the example of what an unbridled self governing authority can produce and that bothers me because that self governing authority is a reflection of a mindset that has produced an impoverished football industry and a set of daft laws to further impoverish it.

The assumption you make there is that bias, bigotry and the squinted mind are efficient in industry.

    They are not.

most industries polluted by this mindset are now shut or have closed due to their inefficiencies, mainly – the wrong man ‘shake’ getting the job.

Our football is on its knees due to this mindset,it is getting better, picking itself up and living within its means, but as you say patience will take care of a lot of what went on.history will prove you correct.

Could this be the first step towards Paul’s fabled Atlantic League? It most certainly could be. Some say Iceland is what Scotland was, about 60 million years ago, dark, smouldering, volcanic and surrounded by fish. Do say, it is like going back in time…

Do not say; “It’s grim up North”.

Celtic will never get in the EPL. They won’t even let us start at the bottom league. We would be as well talking about joining a league on Mars!

That’s fair enough, and I know you dedicate an unreasonable number of hours striving to bring our football governing bodies up to scratch. To do so would be an amazing testament to your work, and be in defiance of both the direct parent body UEFA and the ultimate body FIFA, both of which are at least as corrupt as our own.

My motivation for voting Yes is to get away from an equally corrupt Westminster, which does very little in the interests of the Scottish people, and many things that I would suggest are directly against the views of the majority of Scots. We will continue to be an afterthought more so (and I’ve made this point before) following the next Conservative majority. They are absolutely committed to having electoral boundaries redrawn to represent populations of around 60k. This will massively re-align seats in their favour. Our influence will be even more reduced, as will our budget – the main parties have already signed up to a £4Bn cut in the Scottish budget in the event of ‘No’ vote. NHS in England is on it’s way to privatisation, reducing it’s budget – our NHS budget is calculated as a % of that, we may have no choice but to follow the same path. Labour are noticeable by their silence in all of this. That and stating they’ll cut welfare to the young. They’re a disgrace,

  10. seems on here if you want to stay in the better together camp.then you are public enemy no 1 , well im voting no , better the devil you know, and all this nonsense about reid and haughey, they like you and me are entitled to vote, whoever they like

  11. KR Rejkljavik (CL qualifying) – anyone know why we are trying to get the 2 legs switched?

  12. Ger57

I think you miss an important point. It’s not about Celtic going into the EPL.

It’s about all Scottish clubs being free to enter an environment where they can reach their level based on a more equitable disbursement of income of which TV is a major part.

Swansea have an average gate of 20k. Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee/Utd could aspire to that in a UK league and move up the pyramid as Swansea have done.

UEFA money is an added skew factor and UEFA really do need to look at the damage it has done ( the pursuit of it killed Rangers and sporting integrity welcome though that might be from a green perspective).

This is not an independence issue per se, it is trying to think about the consequences and whether the benefits outweigh the costs.

The idea that the history of football in Scotland in the last 14 years or more has nothing to tell us is one I’m not buying.

How is Celtics involvement in a European league affected by independance

That would negate the need for a UK league and not affect Celtic’s chances of being part of such should independence happen.

Again can you explain how the EPL clubs are more likely to vote for Celtic in the EPL if there is a no vote in September, why would the EPL clubs bother anyway the vote goes

Independence, as things stand will not benefit Celtic or Scottish football. It will keep us in the same small pot and naturally constrict growth.

Are you stating that if there is a no vote in September, Scottish football will grow financially and the league will prosper, any evidence to support this

    Rothbhoy,

Is it because it clashes with another Glasgow club’ home tie?

    Not necessarily European, maybe Ramsden.

  16. Auldheid

Hearts and Hibs couldn’t even stay in the elite league in Scotland.

It’s not making money that is the issue. It’s about spending what you have and not getting into debt. Scottish clubs got a reality check and are now sorting their debt out. We will be in a much better state of affairs when clubs are debt free or near to it and we can address the ridiculous prices that fans are paying to watch football up here and increase the crowd that way.

Not sure that football will hold much sway during the Referendum, though you never know. Even so I am going to stick to my own Atlantic League idea, that will involve clubs from both sides of the Atlantic, from North to South. I am encouraged in this by the reaction, in the USA, to their involvement in the World Cup, outdoor festivals etc. Glasgow will provide one of the teams, a certain Celtic FC in fact.

Hi guys back home again. Just a wee thought, if Scotland is such a burden to WM, and they give us much more cash than we are entitled to, then why the heck are they bending over backwards to keep us in the union. If Scotland contributed in a negative way to the UK economy, they would let us break away without blinking an eye. #Yes for me.

Some people clearly miss the point and don’t understand some very basic things about their place and role within the UK.

Scottish football teams WILL NEVER play in a UK set up.

    WHY?

    1. The FA don’t want us

    2. The teams don’t want us (or those who matter who run them don’t – individual fans and players may though).

    3. They don’t rate us

    4. They don’t need us

    5. They don’t want clubs who can threaten their leading lights

    6. They rightly point out plenty of other clubs from other leagues would want in too.

It is PURE FANTASY and it is time people got over this.

Celtic are staying in Scotland. We can only hope for a European league and that is that.

We are going nowhere in or out of the UK union.

We are looked down upon, we are considered less than those down south and always have been to varying degrees from managers, players and more especially their media.

But somehow if we vote no we’ll be welcomed in?

    Deary me.

  24. Pretty sure the discussions over swapping the legs (oo-er) is to do with the Icelandic teams wish to be involved in a meaningful game and so increase the attendance. Icealanders are infamous for turning their back on their team if they have been batters 7-0 in the first leg ;-)
