Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

The latest edition of the Magazine is out today, click on the download link on the graphic below to read for free.

SFTB what has that post to do with a Celtic blog. Of course you can post what you want but this political stuff (both sides) is not for here ,go to a politco blog and fight amongst each other-Please. Hail Hail Hebcelt

    —————-

Agree wholeheartedly. The political nastiness and snide interchange chased me away from the blog, other than occasionally to read Paul’s leader.

I visited the blog on a work break to read about our fantastic Euro draw. Instead there are mutual insults over politics from Tims barely hiding their contempt for each other. Put a sock in it would you please.

    Aff oot.

  2. Oldtim67 –

You are way off the mark claiming that the papers ridiculed Celtic in the build-up to Lisbon 67. I remember the newspapers leading up to the big day and it was wall-to-wall coverage of Celtic fans and their travels as well as reports and pictures from the Celtic camp.

Certainly the general feeling was that Inter were too strong for us but that was a fair assessment and a big part of the story of Lisbon was the fact that we were the underdogs and nobody outside the Celtic family gave us a chance, but that is a long, long way from them “ridiculing” us.

  3. Murdochbhoy @ 1823,

I love the following “…until they entered the Third Division…”

Aye thats right, they simply decided they had had enough of the Premiership and so up and joined the 3rd Division.

    Hunbelievable!

    HAIL! HAIL!

Looks gloaty, I like it, good salesmanship, then again if your going to keep on gloating, your inviting dissent and challenge, I’m sure if, getting fleeced at Celtic park, was on the cards we’d get a bigger travelling home support.

The SFA”s motivation for todays statement is highly revealing. Timing being everything.

    So why today

    and why not;

When convicted fraudsters invested in the club and sat on the board. Surely more if a worry than dual ownership

    or

When these convicted tax fraudsters were seen courting someone who is wanted by the Malaysian government ?

    Or

At any time since LNS made his pronuncement and the SFA issued their fine ?

There is nobody left at Rangers who are guilty of criminal activities. There are many still in position within the SFA, SPFL and the SMSM. Mike Ashley will stay as the main stakeholder of Sevco once a few matters are resolved to all attending parties satisfaction at the end of January.

Re SFA on Ashley tonight – anyone think it is more than a coincidence?

    1. Donald Findlay comes out and says they are a new club. Of course as a lawyer he knows that and always has done but why say it?

    2. Ally makes his move and resigns forcing the increase in salary and thus adds to the distress at the new club.

    3. SFA do their piece and heap further pressure on the new club.

Has third Rangers written all over it.

  22. Tom McLaughlin

I remember that the press and media coverage was wide and generally supportive. Rangers had qualified tor the CWC final the following week and there was a great feelgood factor, esp with Scotland beating England at Wembley the previous month.

However, the DRs main football writer, a big ugly hun(is there any other kind?) called John Fairgrieve, stated that even although Celtic were European Champions and Rangers had lost their final, Rangers were, and always would be, Scotland’s leading team.

Utter bollocks of course and my dad laughed it off. He said they were the same in 1957. So, Tom, nothing changes. Except this time they’ve gone skint Ye Ha!
