Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

Been offline since thursday. New router arrived today. The reason I was absent yesterday, and BMCUW will back me up in this, I done my ankle in last wednesday and I look as if I have a club foot now. There is no way I would have made it up the Celtic Way yesterday or climbed the stairs to my seat. Starting to ease a bit today but still very painful. It really is nice to have been missed. Luv yawl. :-)))

Weefra HH praying to Wee Oscar.

    My uncle had a club foot…..he paid it up a dollar a week……:}

Become a Half Season Ticket holder

If you’re not already a Season Ticket holder, now is the ideal time to buy one of our Half Season Ticket packages, a benefit of which is the guarantee of a right to buy a ticket for Inter Milan match. For full details visit http://www.celticfc.net/pages/halfseason

  3. I smell s***e with the Sally new wage, as a pay off.

He’s not the most popular with the huns just now and I reckon his true salary would have been revealed at their agm…

There’s a deal been struck to portray him as simple Simon the pie man, and he’s off with a swally bag.

  4. BSR-Inter draw is a money maker for the Club.Good to see the Half Season Ticket back.Maybe Guidetti to sign soon to sell a few more possibly.HH

I was at Tynecastle the day that Gordon went up for the corner. I also questioned our signing of him but that was down to his long lay off through injuries.

For me he’s done more than enough to convince me that I was wrong, he’s been exceptional so far.

    Weefra..,

Why not tell anyone before now ?

I’m sure I’m only one of many that will think about your livestock and if a helping hand might have been offered

  7. Oh how i would love it in the game against Rangers

Being a few up , late into stoppage time

RD sends big Craig up for a corner

See how they like them apples ..:))

Probably get sent off for doing so … haha!!

  8. We have assumed that sevco can ride roughshod over rules that mere mortals have to obey. It seems that the SFA asked sevco about Ashley’s level of influence and have not received a satisfactory reply. Cue action from compliance officer. Maybe some senior bods at the SFA now want to be seen to apply the rules fairly. The glare of publicity must be close to blinding and sevco’s gung ho statement last week will have annoyed a few of the other clubs. Karma!

    Same issue as me.

I was never concerned about him being an ex-Hearts man or about the fluff about coming up for corners. My concerns were about his ability to remain fitand, while I am pleased he has lasted well, I remain concerned that he is having to be “rested” at times because of a reaction to his long term issues. I will be relieved if this turns out to be a John Hartson story and not a Steven Moyokoulo story

Italian football is now in a major slump and there is very little money in the game probably due to the recent corruption scandals according to Eamonn Dunphy , a leading football analyst, it still does not make our draw against Inter Milan any easier but a great match to look forward to in the New Year. There is fabulous history between the clubs, I experienced the elation of 1967 and the shock of that missed penalty kick by the prolific Dixie Deans. It was just unthinkable that Dixie could miss, particularly after we held the mighty Inter in the San Siro. Ah, the days when Celtic were one of the top teams in Europe.

Good win on Saturday and seven goals from two games is OK. Disappointing that Scepovic was not on the starting eleven after his good form in Zagreb. According to reports it was a good day at the office for Stokesy and he has clocked up eight goals and numerous assists, not bad for a wide player and I can see him hitting the magical 20 strikes before the end of the season.

    ger57,

The reply to Res12 on compliance is having the desired affect, affect is not enough though :)

We have spoken quite a few times albeit breifly

I dont take things to seriously , secondly i’m not the sharpest tool in the box .

No i did’nt take any offence i did’nt think it was malicious

anyhoo ,you would have to put in big bold print with my initials on ,for me to realize it was meant for me

    haha

    My grandkids call me

    “a donkey” lol:)

  14. The pressure continues to build at Sevco. As we thought, bad news, and probably even worse news, is no doubt on the way.

  15. bournesouprecipe on

    Bada

Have SMSM said ‘bye bye Celtic’ yet?

It’s a great draw for the club, and high time to beat an Italian side, over two legs.

How we’ll manage it with the sieve system, is another question. Guidetti’s signature would be a start, and more new faces in January.

  16. If Regan is serious about going for a big job in the FA, then it will do him no harm to be seen to be tough on the likes of Ashley…

…whether it’s all for show, remains to be seen.

  17. Are the SFA attempting to assist them by blocking the influence of Ashley in the hope that real sevco men are in the background to provide bridging finance rather than Ashley?

  18. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

Obviously it wouldn’t have been accepted, else you would have told us about yer twisted (torn muscle, that’s probably been protecting about six broken bones) ankle, chasin the missis out efter ewes n bullocks, mucking out the coup and barn is no the life for a lady, Shirley ?

  19. SFTB

I was angry with Gordon at the time but I didn’t see it as anything more than a player desperate to win.

I take your point about the occasions that Ronny’s ‘rested’ him, hopefully it’s only precautionary though.

  20. Neil canamalar

I’m quietly confident that PLs presence at the top tables of the SFA and the SPFL, backed up by Res 12, will bring about a sweeping change at these bodies. Ogilvie, Regan and Doncaster are dead in the water IMO. Most of the bods immediately below them will want to keep their jobs.

  21. Lennybhoy

I was in Corals today when in walked yer big pal Pat.

He asked me to confirm to you doubters:)))) his winning line which went as follows

£20 Q.O.S to beat SEVCO (that was what he had written)and was paid out on :)))))

    £5 Q.O.S to win 2-0 V Sevco

  22. I remember back in !967 when we played that team from Italy, the old papers were doing what they do best, ridiculing Celtic, and the upping up of Internationale Milan,We hadn’t a chance against the best organised defensive system in the World. Everyone believed it except Celtic Supporters,Who hitchhiked, bused, Carred,Sailed, Flew over on planes, never seen them but probably hired horses and rode over too.

I await the shit that these reporters come up with this time, they can’t come up with “The best defensive team in the Galaxy crap”,there again they may shock me and say that we have as good a chance as the tallies (is that racist)?.Naw, they haven’t invented these niceties for Celtic yet,I expect them to write their typical crap about us.

  23. Gene's a Bhoy's name on

maybe regan is trying to demonstrate a bit of professionalism in support of his job application

  24. Ashley out. Admin. Liquidation. League restructuring. Here comes the PR juggernaut. Strap yerselves in. It’s going to get choppy.

  25. nothing without fans on

    ItaliaBhoy

    I was thinking that.

Regan’s personal ambition might have had something to do with the SFA’s recent dig, via Barry Hearn, at the SPFL too.
