Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

If Ashley leaves with his money Dave King will ride to the rescue with his £16m loan hahahahahahaha

In the heat of Lisbon ………

  2. Delighted with the draw. Inter Milan, what a night that will be. Well done the board for rewarding season ticket holders’ loyalty with a £28 ticket.

It was £31 for an ICT ticket a few weeks ago!

Are we going to make a good night of it?

We should make our arrangements right now.

Maybe a Pre match nice venue, ground level, no stairs to negotiate, not everyone limbs are up to it now, given reports on here.

Nice meal, maybe a wee Stornaway black pudding starter, but no politically sensitive topics at the table please.

A conversation about all the best Celtic games we have attended, but no talk about who has the best Uber Celt credentials.

Maybe we could all look out the window to see what the weather is like whilst deliberately creating as many innuendo laden phrases as possible for BSR to produce that picture!

Sounds like a plan to me.

    Oldtim67 –

You are way off the mark claiming that the papers ridiculed Celtic in the build-up to Lisbon 67. I remember the newspapers leading up to the big day and it was wall-to-wall coverage of Celtic fans and their travels as well as reports and pictures from the Celtic camp.

Certainly the general feeling was that Inter were too strong for us but that was a fair assessment and a big part of the story of Lisbon was the fact that we were the underdogs and nobody outside the Celtic family gave us a chance, but that is a long, long way from them “ridiculing” us.

Anything that was said that you seemingly say was good reported about Celtic, I may have missed, I’d be travelling to Lisbon at that time to support my team.

  4. SFA Cabal pulling up Sevco and Regan ready to bolt ,

  5. On Sunday in the Kerrydale Bar I was with 3 generations of Celtic supporters. The kids were talking about going to the traditional Christmas carnival at the SECC. We seniors reminisced about going annually to the Kelvin Hall Circus & Carnival.

Then I mentioned the Celtic v Rangers dogs game and was met with blank stares, so I am hoping some of my fellow “auld yins” can back me up.

During the Kelvin Hall Circus, they organised a football match played by wee dogs wearing Celtic and Rangers shirts. The game lasted 10 minutes or so and the noise was incredible as kids and adults alike cheered on their respective teams.

This took place every Christmas in the 60s and possibly into the 70s. Nobody else in my company on Sunday remembered this phenomenon except me.

Someone please tell me I am not going mad.

“And always, in this broad picture of Scottish football, one name towers above the rest like a colossus, and the name is, of course, Rangers. There is no getting away from it, nor indeed is there any reason why one should try to get away from it. The club, the fans, the players, all have their imperfections, but Rangers are the greatest football club in Scotland, have been so for many years, and very probably always will be, as long as the game is played. This is a fact of football life, and cannot reasonably be argued with.”

I remember being at the Kelvin hall in the 70’s (Altar Bhoys outing) and cheering the successful Celtic dogs wildly.

They only played one breed of dog whereas we had a few different breeds and mongrels :))

  9. Oldtim67 –

Ok so if you didn’t read the papers in the build-up to Lisbon, why did you say they “ridiculed” Celtic?

Oh and I was too young to go to Lisbon but was able to “support my team” nonetheless.

  10. What a great draw for our club today!

Inter have – as our American cousins would say – a storied history

They are genuine giants of the game – although some way off their peak- a bit like ourselves!

It gives our club the opportunity to be centre stage again

Let’s hope that the club decide to back their choice as coach in the January transfer market

with at least a couple of good signings. The biggest and most pressing need is for a proper defensive midfielder IMHO !

    On the uglies

If the SFA are taking Mickey to task – you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s in an effort to help the “guid Rankersmen” in their quest to regain Hunalot from the clutches of those nasty foreign spiv chaps and their local henchmen from Greenock!

    Tom,

    You are correct.

There was an unprecedented support for Celtic in the media prior to the Final.

    It was surprising.

Well, I suppose they had no option.

A week or so after we beat Inter, Rangers were lining up in the Cup Winners Cup final.

They couldn’t put the boot into us and turn round and laud the hun.

There was a general feeling of goodwill, because Glasgow was represented in both finals.

The Rangers chairman was on the tarmac at the airport to welcome us home.

Unfortunately, our city rivals failed to bring home the Cup and, thereafter, normal hostilities were resumed.

  14. Took a photo to Boots to get copied, widnae do it because of copyright ? What’s that all about?

  15. Apparently Michael Ashley became a successful businessman and real life billionaire by being ruthless in his dealings, if the SFA and their cabal think he will roll over and beg for their forgiveness then they’re more deluded than we gave them credit for, interesting times ahead.

When you and Phil are thinking like me, it’s like the Also Spract Zarathustra moment from 2001 A Space Oddesy when the planets align.

SFA would not risk pulling the plug without a back up.

That back up though will not be a 5 way agreement with the new club calling the shots.

Most likely route will be takeover of an existing club in same division playing somewhere other than Ibrox with a lower cost base to work from.

It will be a question of which club will be ready to surrender their identity.
