Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

I’m hearing a deal has been struck for JG and the fee is £3M

    Anyone?

    —————-

Wee bit pricey for Jim Goodwin…..

    ——

I thought st mirren showed smatterings of quite watchable football yesterday (esp McGinn) as have several visiting Scottish teams this season.

But couldn’t help but think you’re goosed if ‘Danny’ Goodwin gets pushed forward into your midfield!

  2. This whole McCoist thing, is he the biggest crook out the lot?

Direct costs are say 3 years wages @ £800k = £2.4m, £1m in shares.Non Qualification for CL £10m quicly followed by non qualification EL say £3m . Less 7(?) domestic cups at lets say 0.5k per cup = £3.5m

so before we look at the money he wasted on the squad , he is responsible for taking out approx £3.5m and by his incompetence, denied Sevco an income of anything up to £15m

Lets round up the whole thing to £20m.

    Super Ally right enough

did ticketus get their money ? or are you suggesting that they never expected full payment. and were not as stupid as duped moonbeams. Plausible ? We all know that Grier brokered that deal ? I bet Charlotte was not even present when that deal was done. King in waiting possibly putting it up.

Only the creditors ripped off by moonbeams have not and never will get any recompense.

The demented huns who have been ripped off time and time again will queue up to be gladly ripped off again with full approval of the football and governing authorities.

    and people still vote.

  4. I think it highly unlikely that there will be any general sale for the Inter game. Not sure how many season ticket holders we currently have but I understand that it’s in the high 30-thousands. Given that season ticket holders will also (eventually) be entitled to try to secure an additional 2 tickets each then a sell out is all but certain.

Liking EC67’s suggestion of a well organised pre-game meet up. A bit more notice than I received for yesterday’s hastily arranged session ;-)

See when big Jock said that was he not meaning John Grieg

I can distinctly remember any time a ” dug” appeared on the pitch at CP the crowd would chant Griegy’s name!

Or am I going even more senile?

  7. HT-Season Ticket holders will then have the opportunity to purchase an additional two tickets for the match on Wednesday January 7 on a first come, first served basis at general sale prices.

There’s nothing in it for Ashley to put fortunes into Sevco …he has gained control for loose change ….will he plough in he money they need to survive

My guess…he’ll risk an administration …hunt overpaid clowns like Mcculloch and ride out this season …promising a proper approach next season

  9. If RD can sort

out our defensive frailties we could have a very good season ahead , so much to look forward to , if we get the two or three signings we all know we need , well very interesting days indeed.

Needless to say keeping the good ones we have already ,))

  12. Apropos Bomber………

I was on a train to Dundee earlier this year. There was a guy sitting in one of the 2 seat ‘berths’ looking angry. Not that unusual given that the train had originated in Glasgow and those who were unfortunate or foolish enough to stay on till the bitter end would arrive in sheepville city limits.

But this guy took looking angry to new levels of …… well …… angry ness.

He sat staring at the grey plastic seat frame in front of him as though he was going to kill it. He looked familiar through his contorted countenance.

    Then I realised. T’was Bomber.

Mibbee he was angry cos he couldn’t work out how to unclip the wee table thingie. Mibbee he thought the deeds were tucked behind the wee table.

Mibbee it was cause I was whistling Let The People Sing?

    Who knows?

But just in case it was the final option I stopped and started whistling This Land is my Land. Just to be sure!

    Joy!

    That’s the thing.

Who knows who got the cash out of Sevco?

What is known is that approx £70m has oozed out the door.

    Who are Blue Pitch?

    Who are Laxey representing?

Step 2 was always about getting cash out.

  19. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Well with Celtic and Man.City agreeing a 3 million fee for John Guidetti todays Europa cup draw which paired us with Inter Milan that might just push the big striker towards signing a permanent deal. I believe his agent is due to meet the sharp suited man this week. H.H.

  20. Can we expect justice from the SFA over Ashley or another dose of justice Nimmoesque style?

I fear another excercise in operation save Sevco is just around the corner.

  21. Another great save from Inter keeper from a cracking overhead kick. Still up 1-0 in Chievo.

Fair bit of ‘off the ball’ stuff going on here so we’ll need a strong ref and no lightweight players !
