Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

  1. Just seen a ‘not the real Rangers anymore’ type thread on RM. That’s the seeds getting sown for a third entity backed by ‘real’ Rangers men.

    This is just the beginning.

It’s called the Gallowgate Travel Club. It’s run by the same guy who runs our bus from Bar 67 but they only travel to European away games.

  3. clashcitybhoy-Teams will try harder in EL this season , as the winners now go straight through to next season’s CL Group stage, without any qualifiers I believe.

Exciting times, perhaps a few Rangers entities in the league. What about a pre season tournament between them and Linfield, the Loving Cup or more like bigotRus!

Inter Milan in the Europa, what’s not to like. OK so we’re not at the top of the footballing tree, either of us, but bhoy does it not just make you dream of our glorious past. Our heroes of old and great European nights from the past.

Personally I can’t wait for it to come round, will be counting down the days, watching youtude clips and generally feeling nostalgic.

Meanwhile fans of another Glasgow club will be dreading every new day and the new horrors of their reincarnation.

Isn’t it great being a Celtic fan just now. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine the events of the past few years.

I have always believed what goes around comes around and bhoy oh bhoy is it comming around hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I’m a bit perplexed by this statement at the bottom of a BBC Sport article today:

“Rangers, who were founded in 1872, had never played outside the top division from the formation of the Scottish League in 1890 until they were demoted in 2012, a year after winning their 54th Scottish title.”

How do you go about pointing out a mistaken story on bbc and asking for a correction/retraction?

  11. Chievo 0 – Inter 2.

Inter looked more up for it than has been their norm this season They didnt wilt in the face of some seriously rustic stuff from Chievo.Very good midfield shift from Kovacic

..agreed…you now see things in the media never seen before regarding sevco…that tells me they know its allover….but…as James Forrest highlighted the battle will be to say NO(ouch from me )..to anymore R##%### nonsense…no more same club garbage when the crash comes….

  13. That’s flights booked, hotel booked for a wee city break in Milan in late February for Mrs C and me, wonder if there will be anything worth going to see while we’re there?

  14. Hadn’t noticed this before. How sleekit can you be. This guy is unreal. He was asked a question about what he had done, that’s not speculation! Bare faced shameless liar. The exact opposite of dignity and loyalty.

    Walk away, complete your shame

  15. Had a little thought about us getting Inter a few weeks ago when I posted – thought ’67 again (only to be reminded by CQNers about the 0-0 & pens – somehow blanked it out my mind even though I know Dixie). C’est la vie!

2 visits to the San Siro and negativity – 3rd time lucky?

OK! TET/ ACGR/ Oldtim is this a flat booking for a few days (aka Barca?)

Brian: “Can I… join your group?”

    Reg: “No. Piss off!”

Brian: “I didn’t want to sell this stuff. It’s only a job. I hate the Roman Catholics as much as anybody.”

    Judith: “Are you sure?”

Brian: “Oh, dead sure. I hate the Roman Catholics already.”

Reg: Listen. If you really wanted to join the W.A.T.P.F.G., you’d have to really hate the Roman Catholics”

    Brian: “I do!”

    Reg: “Oh, yeah? How much?”

    Brian: “A lot! FTP! WATP!”

Reg: “Right. You’re in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Roman Catholics are the fecking Govan People’s Front …and asylum seekers …and HMRC…and…”

  17. The key aspect of rule 19 is the ‘Except with the prior written permission of the Board’ bit.

Expect a wee ticking off in relation to the current charge swiftly followed by a begging letter of written permission; think this has a way to run. The ‘for the good of Scottish football’ campaign will be stepped up with earnest…

Good Morning Inter Milan……love that my bhoy.

Re Huns playing Bayern Munich last time we played Inter…..

They played them previous time we played Inter as well (them getting humped in Cup Winners Cup Final as we were making history in Lisbon)

Really doubt they’ll make it 3 in a row.

  22. Corkcelt @20.52

My sentiments exactly. With Guidetti and Denayer we have tapped a decent source of talent from Man City which has proven beneficial to both clubs.

If we were to stiff them on Guidetti the goodwill generated would obviously be shot to pieces.

  23. You know these multi team scarves you get outside Celtic Park. All the teams in our group section…..

If some wag brings out a multi Hun version I might think about my first ever Hun-related (unofficial) merchandise.

Don’t you be thinking about the Govan Dead Heads.

Inter in Europe is more soothing to the senses.

Sorry I missed you yesterday. Thanks Scotrail, arrived at 12.50 instead of half hour earlier.

  27. According to Roddy Forsyth in the Telegraph, the SFA will allow Ashley to increase his shares in sevco to 29.9%.This will be done to get them competing in the champions league and attract sponsors to Scottish football.

    Deluded or what.
