Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

  2. I think there has been a significant change in attitude to Saving Rangers At All Costs”

Now that the bill for that approach is being served the fear of losing “Rangers as was” is nothing as strong as it was in 2012.

Fear of the financial consequences and reaction of angry bears is no longer a factor.

In fact you could argue that the actual experience of the former has had a sobering effect on the latter.

The SFA are in a stronger position to bargain with Ashley than they were with CG.

The SFA always had the power to prevent “Rangers” continuing in any form under licensing rules, but it was a bargaining chip that never saw the table for fear of the consequences.

Now they could make a licence dependent on conditions they set that would be part of a public agreement that not only “Rangers” fans would welcome because it guarantees no more instability, but the supporters of other clubs would accept, subject to verifiable monitoring.

This policy represents a way out of the mess our game finds itself in because there has been no transparency or accountability or courage.

Domestic FFP rigorously policed would provide the kind of assurances that the days of pursuit of UEFA geld to keep a club alive have been well and truly consigned to history.

This hard nosed do it our way approach would apply whether it’s Ashley or New Blues riding on to the scene.

Time the SFA grew a set and those without gonads moved aside to let real men of integrity take over.

According to Roddy Forsyth in the Telegraph, the SFA will allow Ashley to increase his shares in sevco to 29.9%.This will be done to get them competing in the champions league and attract sponsors to Scottish football.

    Deluded or what.

Is that for real? I wonder if he bought shares in Newco , like he did in Oldco, shame he lost them though…….

  7. You know that there’s a big game on the horizon when the a Lions Roar…a wee message below for Willie Wallace…

Hi David, We are all well here enjoying sweltering weather. Hope all family are well and pass on our good wishes for Christmas and New Year to the family and all at CQN. I was saddened to hear that Tommy Gemmell is in hospital, had a long chat with Mary the other night.

“Regarding Inter Milan, it is fantastic that we will have one of the elite European Clubs back at Celtic Park. Inter have not been doing so well in their domestic or European competitions this year but will still be a formidable opposition. I know the Celtic support will be totally behind the team for these two games and I am sure the players will be up for this as it is inspirational playing against the top clubs. What an opportunity to show Celtic can still be a force in Europe. Keep in mind the LISBON Lions were not given much of a chance back in 1967. I wish the team all the best and success over the two matches against Inter. Hail, Hail. ”

Will talk to you soon David, All the Best, Willie.

  9. Appears Inter are looking for a winger in January ? Being linked with Jaunjez (or whatever his name is) of Man U on loan & also Salah ? Of Chelsea, again on loan

I’m hoping we can get rid of a few, offer them Berget, Boerrigter, Wakaso and Tonev, in fact I’ll throw in McGregor to the deal :-)

Then Celtic spend the money wisely :-)

    UoF Statement on Ally McCoist

“We note the board’s announcement of Alistair McCoist’s resignation and the disclosure of Ally’s severance entitlement in their statement to the LSE this morning.

Ally has made the correct decision to resign. Things have not gone well this season on the park, and off it he has seen the club decimated by the incompetents in the boardroom. They are ripping the heart and soul out of our club, laying off long serving, low paid staff to save a relative pittance and leave the club on the brink of hardly being able to operate. Rangers is a family and that family is being torn apart by this board. All this while Mr Llambias, Mr Somers and the other members of the board enjoy their salaries, expenses and freebies in hospitality despite contributing nothing.

Mr Somers publicly defended the payoff to Brian Stockbridge and even, bizarrely, his performance. Mr Easdale publicly defended the payoffs to Charles Green and Imran Ahmad. Mr Easdale even made public statements which we believe assisted Imran Ahmad to secure a settlement he did not deserve. Despite this, they are now attempting to throw a club legend under a bus without even having discussed the terms of his severance with him. They were happy to line the pockets of people who have decimated Rangers but it would appear Ally McCoist, who as a player and employee has contributed more than they could ever dream of, is not worthy of even the courtesy of confidentiality in severance discussions.

In our opinion, the salary given to Ally by Charles Green was too high. It was agreed pre administration when Rangers were a Champions League team but it should have been amended to a more realistic level. This is in common with the inflated salaries that Mr Green gave to all senior staff members including himself. Ally worked for nothing during administration to try and assist the club. He was alone in voluntarily reducing his salary last year when the true extent of the financial mismanagement by the board became apparent. We believe he did the right thing by reducing that salary by around 50%. In fact, his gesture should have meant that the lower paid employees at the club would be safe from the kind of cuts we have seen Derek Llambias implement in the past few weeks.

We hope Ally will do the right thing and come to a solution that is beneficial to both him and club. By the club we mean the club and not this board or those who control them. We will not accept this board’s toxic spin and ham-fisted attempts to blacken the name of a club legend. We hope Ally can go with our best wishes and will remain Super Ally long after the names of the charlatans in this boardroom are mercifully forgotten.”

  13. Martin42,

We have a very good chance, is all I am going to say.

Hopefully, the new lads respond to a Monumental Support and get at least a 2 goal advantage, a 1-0 will be excellent but I think people are starting to Feel it, something is stirring.

On the subject of the Celtic dugs v Sevco dugs at the Kelvin Hall.

Mind it well, loved going to the shows and circus every year.Fantastic memories.

Used to be a big Christmas parade too from outside the Kelvin Hall all the way to Lewis stores in Argyle St which ended with Santa climbing up a ladder and going in the side window into the store.

That was the ‘real’ Santa.Magical when you were a wean.

  23. Re that Union of Fuds statement…

Love their reference to McCoist salary being agreed “pre-administration”.

They have a serious issue with that L word, don’t they…..

Say it lads…..you know you want to….

Just to start with, do it in 2 parts which makes it much easier.

    Say LIQUID

Then wait a few seconds….or count silently to 3, whichever is easiest….

Now say ATION…..Sort of like Nation but without the N.

Keep doing this but reduce the time gap between the 2 words, until there is no actual gap.

    LIQUIDATION.

Then keep saying it faster and faster until yer heid birls.

When yer heid stops birling that’s when reality kicks in and you start to feel better.
