Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

Why would Celtic agree the fee of £3m with Man City for JG.

Surely , he is a free agent and able to sign for who he likes for nowt in January?

I will be astounded if PL pays £3m for Guidetti ….a player with 6 months left on his contract

Doesn’t make sense to anyone …least of all Guidetti

Sign a pre contract and pocket a healthy signing on fee

The only winners in Jan transfer are Man City

  6. Ooooff. Milan goal scorer Kovacic scythed down – yellow card !! Should have been red for that late challenge.

Burghbhoy. The money that has been agreed allows us to sign the player first and keeps other clubs out of the frame John would become a Celtic player in January on say a four year deal. If we try to sign him on freedom of contract the fear is some other club could beat our offer and we would lose the player.H.H.

Great draw for Ronny & the bhoys today, watching the Flying Donkeys v Inter just now, no way this will end 11 v 11, got a small wager on Inter both to score & win doubled with Rejika earlier. (won 2-1)……double was put on before the draw, which has made this a bit more interesting watching

    “I can vouch for this

I note with interest that the “Ally took a 50% pay cut” narrative seems to be a hardy meme in Planet Fitba.

The reality is much more interesting.

Earlier this year, after discussions with Philip Nash, Mr McCoist agreed to give up his bonus from last season and his unvouched expenses.

I am not sure, at time of writing, is ‘give up’ means he agreed to forego the bonus or merely defer it.

However I will try to ascertain that for you in the near future.

You may, dear reader, think that the expense thing is no big deal.

However you would be wrong on that one.

Under his contract Mr McCoist was due an annual expense allowance of £125,000 in unvouched expenses.

Unvouched means no receipts have to be presented, it is part of his overall remuneration package and is in addition to his annual salary of £750k.

I understand that these expenses are now restored to him.

This rather generous allowance was part of his new contract.

That is the one that he agreed with Charles of Normandy who was, at the time, besieged in the Ibrox keep by that somewhat uncouth pretender John de Bomber of Govan.

Mr Alistair has been rather costly to keep in the Big Bleak House.

A source close to the action took me through the numbers.

Mr McCoist received an annual salary of £750k pa for two years (£1.5m) and those unvouched expenses £125k pa also for two years (250k).

His league winning bonuses (two of them) were (conservatively) 50% of his annual salary so another £750k pa.

However they may (like those of Charles Green) been as much as 100% of his annual salary of £750k

So that could be around £2.5m for Mr McCoist since Charles of Normandy invited him to the Sevco banquet.

A number crunching buddy told me that the £125k pa figure for expenses made some sense of an item in TRFC that had been baffling him. He said that the figure for “sundry expenses” was very high indeed and this made the picture a lot clearer for him.

If Mr McCoist is paid his full severance package (another 750k) then Super will have taken around £3.25m out of RIFC/TRFC by the time he does walking away.

As I wrote today the accounts of The Rangers Football Club (formerly known as Sevco Scotland Limited) will shine a light on the true nature of McCoist’s remuneration.

If you will recall the RIFC year-end accounts stated that the company would require £8m to get through the year.

Well I have been assured that is, to use a well know term from accountancy, pish.

I am told that a far more realistic figure would be £12m.

As well as that the cost of a prospectus for the share issue –assuming they stick to the £8m figure- would be between £500k and £800k.

In other words the likely cost of the McCoist pay off.

For the avoidance of doubt RIFC/TRFC cannot pay off Mr McCoist because they simply do not have the money. They will have to access external finance or ask Super Ally to do walking away for free.

In the meantime Mr McCoist remains the manager of The Rangers Football Club.”

    ————

The 3mill City deal sounds nonsense.

On January 1st JG can sign a precontract with Celtic for a £3mill signing on fee with minimal compo to City, or we give £3mill to City and get JG on a contract.

None of these scenarios stop other clubs offering JG or City the exact same deals.

  20. Its allover at sevco…they will not see out the season..sally chucks it…sfa call out ashley…press reports mentioning the dreaded L word….its the end game….no doubt in my mind….

  21. I reckon Celtic would want to keep well in with Man City. With Ronny’s contacts and the success of Denayer & Guidetti, we are probably in line to get further loans of talented youngsters. If we tried a smart move with Guidetti and stiffed City that would be the end of the relationship.

  25. Personally I’d be delighted if some gang of Huns bought over Airdrie or Cowdenbeath and rebranded them Glasgow Rangers and started challenging us.

There is no way in the world that the deluded could claim they were the same Club, their trophy haul would start at zero and we would still have the fun of skelping them. A WIN WIN WIN situation.

  26. Joe Filippis Haircut on

the huddle. Firstly PFayr is correct no one can force JG to do anything he has to agree if any club wish to sign him for free on a pre-contract in January he doesnt become there player until his contract runs out with Man.City in the summer.Celtic and Man.City have agreed a fee to sign the player in January on a permanent deal if the player agrees so he belongs to Celtic from January 2015 from Celtic point of view it would eliminate the risk of losing the player. H.H.

  27. JFH

I guess that makes sense, but I cannot imagine that we will pay £3m for a guy with 6 months left on his contract.

Could it be PL was panicked into agreeing that given the transfer window was closing and it looked we had lost out on Scepovic?

Maybe he feared even he couldn’t get away with not signing a striker, any striker , in the last window?

  28. PFayr, Doesn’t sound good when you put it like that, but they are one of the richest Clubs in the world and being practical ,having a working relationship with them could pay dividends. Look what Ronny brought in this year, Berget, Tonev & Wakaso plus the Man City boys Guidetti & Denayer. Easy to see where the quality came from. Most of the guys we “are developing” for them will still not make their first team squad, so the type of option we appear to have with Guidetti might be repeated with other prospects.

  29. corkcelt

Exactly what I’ve been saying since this all started.

Their desperation for the ‘same club’ status is to keep their ‘world record’ trophy haul intact as they know that the ‘new club’ status means they start from scratch – and of course they will never, ever catch up to us once we inevitably go past them.

This detonates their ‘watp’ supremacy and is the worst possible outcome they can contemplate – even worse than ’10 in a row’ .

At least – in theory – they could better that one day – stop laughing at the back that bhoy !!
