The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions. Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition. The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.
It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives. Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.
The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter. History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.
If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one. Bring it on.
Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”. Still time to order yours for Christmas.
You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

Burghbhoy. It is like all transfers a gamble but JG is only 22 if we pay 3 million for him on say a four year contract and he keeps banging in the goals we would get the chance to sell him on at a profit after say three seasons he would still only be 25.Now when you take all the money we have wasted on so called strikers over the last 3 seasons I think the sharp suited man will see it a gamble worth taking. H.H.

Thanks for that.Nice that someone agrees with a post. I know nout about young Dingwall, but reminded me of Tony Green. Quick feet, skill and full of energy. A bit like myself.

the huddle. Firstly PFayr is correct no one can force JG to do anything he has to agree if any club wish to sign him for free on a pre-contract in January he doesnt become there player until his contract runs out with Man.City in the summer.Celtic and Man.City have agreed a fee to sign the player in January on a permanent deal if the player agrees so he belongs to Celtic from January 2015 from Celtic point of view it would eliminate the risk of losing the player. H.H.

It still doesn’t make any sense for JG (or Celtic really), sure makes sense for City.
JG can double his wages by signing as a free agent.

Remember a 4-0 humiliating defeat for the Celtic dugs at the Kelvin Hall in the 60s, utterly baffling to a young Bhoy.

I can assure you that my dog …. a sweet little Golden retriever named Derry (she’s allowed to nip anyone who calls her London) who barks in Irish, has her own Celtic jersey, and has even been to mass and been baptized (okay …blessed by the priest when she was a pup) …. is most definitely catholic, except she never quite got the hang of not eating meat on Fridays.
Everton now 3 up. And the 6th corner just awarded. Getting a run for my pennies…

Everton for me tonight to beat Queens Park Sevco by at least 3 goals. And more than 11 corners in the game

the_huddle. We will just have to wait and see what the outcome is I think it makes sense for both City and Celtic but the ball is firmly in JGs court. H.H.
About the JG signing issue – is Mark Lawwell (son of) not a Scouting and Recruitment Analyst at Man City? Should iron out a few wrinkles then ??
I remember they dugs at the KH I believe their team of dugs were all daschuns

I agree with you in as much we would be better to pay £3m for a striker we know is decent but surely JG holds all the aces.
He can sign for whoever he wants.
Surely we can speak to his agent, sign him for zero if he wants to stay with us and give him a bumper salary and lump sum with the £3m saved.
Man City hold the duff card surely as from January they have no real say over the player?
Corkcelt-i can see an ‘undisclosed fee’ for Guidetti, I hope so ,as he’s the nearest thing we have had to a centre forward for years . He’s missed a few in recent games but maybe not a bad thing given his situation, and hasn’t cost us any points.
In case some haven’t seen..
” Rangers & Mike Ashley accused of ownership breach by Scottish FA
Rangers and Mike Ashley have been accused of breaching several Scottish FA rules relating to the Newcastle United owner’s stake in the Ibrox club.
Ashley owns 8.29% of Rangers and has an agreement with the SFA that he will not increase that to above 10%.
However, in October, Ashley’s £2m loan to the Scottish Championship club allowed him to appoint two directors.
The SFA wrote to Rangers and Ashley seeking clarification and will now hold a disciplinary hearing on 27 January.
Both the club and Ashley have been issued with notices of complaint alleging they have violated Scottish FA rules on dual ownership of clubs and failed to “act in the best interests” of football.
Rangers have further been accused of not acting “with the utmost good faith” towards the Scottish FA and its member clubs.
Newcastle have declined to comment, but the Premier League in England has no rules outlawing dual ownership.
However, the Football League does have specific rules banning interests in more than one football club – so if Newcastle were relegated, Ashley’s stake in Rangers would then become an issue in England.
In September, Newcastle released a statement on behalf of Ashley, which said he “remains committed” to the club until at least the end of the 2015-16 season.
Former Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias was named a non-executive director at Ibrox after Ashley’s initial loan.
Then, later in November, it was confirmed the Newcastle owner had provided Rangers with a further £1m.
Ashley, who owns Sports Direct, has control of Rangers’ shirt sales and retail division for the next five years.
Newcastle declined to comment, but the Premier League in England only takes issue with dual ownership if both clubs are in the division.
However, the Football League does have specific rules banning interests in more than one club – so if Newcastle were relegated it would then become an issue in England as well.
In September, Newcastle released a statement on behalf of Ashley, which said he “remains committed” to the club until at least the end of the 2015-16 season.”
Partick Bhoy’s.
Does that wee woman, still walk her dug, you know the dug with the Celtic scarf? Used to make me smile when I saw them on Dumbarton Rd.
Burghbhoy. JG has already said for him it is not all about the money he wants to show his grand children what he has won playing football. So if he is being truthful we have a chance of him signing. However,he holds all the aces I agree. H.H.
Just had my 16 yo nephew on phone bar67 running a bus to Milan.
If his dad let’s him go…
City may prefer JG not to sign for an EPL team either, might haunt them at some point.
That is an astonishing setup at the EPL, they talk about wanting to tackle corruption, then allow this multiple ownership that may create just that.

Hope you are right bud!!
Would love the Big mhan to sign.
Would love to get the young laddie from RD’s old club and keep Big Virgil.
That would be a great window !!

The theatre of delusions
6 Replies
I was speaking to a very senior person in football administration today.
He has run a provincial club and is a match delegate in the top flight.
As we were discussing the latest instalment from the Ibrox soap opera he said to me “it’s like a circus”.
I said that I thought it was more like a magic show.
Nothing is as it seems and it is all set up to fool the paying punters, but that’s what they paid for.
Since 2012 to pay into Ibrox has been to suspend belief and the price of the ticket got you an alternative reality voucher.
You got to pretend that the club you had grown up supporting had not died in liquidation.
Ibrox became the theatre of delusions and the amazing Chuckles proved himself to the consummate delusionist.
However it could get stranger in 2015.
In times past The People were fond of chanting “there is not at team like the Glasgow Rangers. No not one and there never shall be one!”
Well there might be soon.
Actually there could be several.
The following can only realistically happen if the current entity is liquidated.
I remember writing in late 2011 early 2012 about the real possibility of Rangers being liquidated.
When I published that analysis it was scoffed at by The People with their usual racist ad hominems added.
I suspect that the online hatred that was aimed at me was designed to make me do walking away from this story.
They were as wrong about me as they were about the chances of Rangers surviving the 2011-2012 Season without going bust.
Of course, on several levels, The People were wrong so I think their Pavlovian responses to the following can be discounted ex parte.
Firstly the troubles of RIFC/TRFC are now well documented to such an extent that even The People get it.
RIFC have now published two sets of annual accounts and their catastrophic subsidiary TRFC (formerly Sevco Scotland limited) has also published their inaugural accounts earlier this year.
Liquidation is real a possibility, only the wherewithal of Big Mike can prevent it now.
At this stage his long term intentions apropos Sevco are uncertain.
However if the SFA decide that he is a naughty boy then he might quit.
Sport, of course, is about competition and the chaps at Ibrox might not be the only show in town soon.
‘Glasgow Rangers’ might be the name picked for the next entity to vie for the affections of The People in 2015.
One distinct possibility that is in the pipeline is that someone or some consortium would purchase a struggling Scottish football club, perhaps in the lower reaches.
They would then rename and rebrand it to make it alluring to The People.
Some of them might agree with Mr Donald Findlay QC that the current “entity” at Ibrox was not the real Rangers.
Obviously the chap heading it up would need to have a large enough quantum to impress the dignified tendency.
As in any team the guy up front is crucial and if I was trying this wheeze then I think I would enlist someone like Mr Souness to be suitably Churchillian.
Yes, I think that would work, merely speculation on my part of course.
Of course in the other light blue corner there is Mr David Cunningham King. I rather suspect Mr David Somers called it correctly last spring when he told the man without a pen that his game was liquidation.
Those are two possible scenarios if Big Mike does walking away.
Buy a struggling outfit and rename it as some kind of Rangers.
Wait till RIFC /TRFC collapses in liquidation and then snap up the major assets, Ibrox and the world renowned Albion carpark.
Both of these plays involve the cooperation of an understanding governing body.
Yes…
Of course timing is vital and whichever plan comes to fruition it must happen in the, very short, close season.
The transfer of membership is key for the King play, but not for the rebranded club.
The Clydebank/Airdrie scenario would then be in play.
We have seen over the last two years the desperate need of The People to deny that Rangers were liquidated.
Subsequently we saw the risible fiction of the Holding Company Vehicle take hold.
Charlie turned up and proved himself to be a top class continuity trickster.
The audience fell for it because they wanted to.
He conjured up Sevco and they thought they were looking at Rangers.
It worked like magic.
In a puff of smoke he was gone only to reappear in Normandy with the box office takings.
Voila!
RIFC is hamstrung by his Onerous Contracts and until they vanish then Sevco is as good as sawn in half.
Even with a top class guy like Mr Llambias driving the bus the entity that Charles of Normandy created cannot be saved while those legally binding agreements are in place.
Actually RIFC/TRFC does not need a Chief Executive they need an escapologist.
However The people might be about to be enthralled by an entirely new act.
Burghbhoy. We are on the same page fella but I see the young lad from Ronys old club has gone to Germany this week to train with Bayern Munich so that doesnt look to good. H.H.

Good morning Inter Milan!
Ok maybe not, but you do not want to waste a line like that. Or at least I don’t.
Now here’s the thing, if my memory serves me well, the last time we played Inter, the ol Rangers FC as was played Bayern Munich, in Glasgow on the same night. They won we didnae. They’re gone now of course, and all these years later we are back playing Inter at Celtic Park, and the new club’s last home game was against the mighty Cowdenbeath.
Funny that!
As I’m in the home ticket scheme I expect to receive my inter Milan ticket along with the sevco semi final letter in the post without lifting a finger, canny beat been faithfull through and through :-)

We’re first in line mate, don’t worry about it HH
Inter win 2-0 against 10 man Chievo, their first win under Mancini
No mistake, this Inter side look a decent team, They pass crisply, are very mobile both going forward and covering back, and defend like Italians do.
They have also taken a fair pounding from an agricultural Chievo team and just got on with it. No wonder Serie A has the additional officials behind the goals. SPFL can’t even afford the free kick foam.
Especially liked their no 10 Kovacic ( like a young, trim KC) and grafter no 55 Nagatomo. We will certainly have to be at our best to qualify for last 16, but not beyond us. They haven’t experienced ‘the thunder’ yet !

I bet Everton minus 2…
Useless decision and QPR go up and score…
Blinkin incompetant officials….
Looking forward to the Inter game already.
I was at CP for the game in 72, which was probably my first home European game as a very wee Bhoy.
The Europa League starts to get interesting at this point, as depending upon domestic form and politics, some clubs are well up for progress, and others don’t want to be there.
Let’s hope Inter are in latter camp.
On Guidetti, it is very much up to him on whether or not he stays.
The transfer fee won’t be a barrier.
Does anyone have a copy of the CQN ad to be placed in the media before the Sevco game ?
I’m sure I had it saved on my PC, but must have deleted it
And spelling..
