Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

  1. Turkeybhoy @ Joe Fillipis haircut,

Thanks for your replies ref a fee for JG.

Much appreciated although still baffled with talk of a development fee. Who are the recipients’ of this “development” fee.? Surely it cannot be the player and / or his agent ?

Nope. He had him for breakfast in Coia’s yesterday.

I spoke to WEEFRATHETIM on Friday. He had twisted his ankle and reckoned he might be a non-starter on Sunday.

    Hopefully he’ll be fine shortly.

Personally I think he’s just an attention-seeking wee sod who couldnae be bothered turning up,but I’m sure he’ll be touched by the concern of many on here.

    And on my phone!

PS-only kidding about the attention-seeking. I’m sure he’ll let us know later on.

  7. My friends in Celtic,

This is where we need our custodians to display “common sense” and innovation..

Price the game to ensure a full house. Give incentives if necessary.

Greenpinta. If Man City do not sign John Guidetti and he becomes a free agent in the summer there will be no development fee due as he has no attachment to Man.City.A development fee will only be due if he signs for a club in January while he is still a Man.City player that is my understanding the devolpment fee would go to Man. City. H.H.

Just back from Hamburg where I had the pleasure of watching St Pauli go down 1-0 to FC Darmstadt. SP are now anchored at the bottom of the Bundesliga 2. And judging by the way they played yesterday they’ll be needing miracles to avoid the drop this season.

However, what blew the socks of this blogger was the support. 25,000+ fans who belted out a constant stream of songs n’ chants the entire match. Always getting behind the team. And almost to a man/woman they stayed not only the full 90, but until the team trudged back out on the pitch to receive their cheers.

Fantastic support – maybe we could learn a thing or two from them !!

Oh a word of warning for anybody thinking of going. DO NOT USE Viagogo.com to buy tickets. I did and SP wouldn’t accept them at the gate, as they do not (rightly) agree with Viagogo’s “mark up” policy. We were able to buy the same tix back fro, SP at face value (20 Euro). Pass it on.

  10. Inter were linked with Guidetti in 2012 . There was a wee flurry of ” it would be a dream come true ” guff from Guidetti. .

Mancini has poured scorn on the Balotelli rumor .

New Indonesian owner isnt popular because he hasnt flashed his cash ..

Lots of rumors last season that Mazzari had lost the dressing room with constant tinkering and tactical changes . Those rumours re appeared this season and a run of bad results resulted in Mazzari being replaced by Mancini .

They have been under performing -with the players they have they should be doing better than they are . .Mancini has claimed that the players are” psychologically down “

  11. Inters EL group stage home attendances this season are

I take it tickets for travelling fans won’t be an issue.

  12. Worrying events in Sydney. There is no way the gunman will allow himself to come out of this alive. I hope and pray he doesn’t decide to take innocent people down with him.

One thing I find strange. Hours into the siege, the TV constantly described “a black flag with Arab words on it”. How long would it take them to get a translation and tell us all what it actually said?

Was over a few yrs back.. special people the st pauli fans. Hope the team can turn it around.

Good to see ronnie trying to bring some german style to the team by bringing players over to fans at end of the game.

  14. Celtic v Inter.

The Huns’ nightmare draw. Already Sky Sports New headlining the match with a second sentence full of ‘Jock Stein’, ‘European champions’, ‘Lisbon Lions’, ‘First British club to win European Cup’.

    LMAO.

Rub, rub, rub it in. Huns, Norman Mailer spelled it out for you: ‘the universe – she is a bitch.’

  15. Paul67 – thanks! Would love to. It’ll cost me the guts of £200 plus to get over with kids in tow. Couple of tickets for myself and my old man, associated expenses – I could buy a half SB alright – but I couldn’t get to the game if I did!! Catch 22 buddy!

Incidentally, I’ve Celtic TV, have bought 3 full price Celtic tops from the Celtic shop, spent a small fortune in it on saturday for Christmas and will be at a couple of games buying 4 tickets (3 at full price – 6 in total) at each toward the end of the season. If I can get tickets for Inter it’ll be another 4 if I can get them.

An SB would be cheap. But without a great deal of value to me! Maybe it’s a false economy on my part but it just can’t be justified at present….

I’ll have contributed more than a SB by the end of the season as usual.

I get a wee bit irked at the whole SB thing as a result.

And sorry of that comes over like a rant. I am typing and thinking in nice calm and pleasant unconfrontational tones!!

Sadly now im gonna have to listen to the racist ozzys go into overdrive about foreigners ..boats..457s etc

  18. Why would we pay for JG in January? He is signed till end of season. We can sign a pre-contract anytime then… If it is to secure a player before other offers then why would you want him if he doesn’t keep his word.

  19. Tom,

Good old Channel7 were onto it early today, “there is no God but Allah, Mohammed is his prophet”, or words to that effect. I think that’s what is on the Saudi flag as well.

    Good point,mate.

£25 a throw for the standard seats and a bit more for the posh ones wi waitress service and you’re looking at £2m right away.

Add in the merchandise et al and TV money,a tidy wee sum.

Not bad when it’s £23 to watch Swindon.

I doubt Celtic will try to rip the fans but I expect season ticket holders to pay less than others.

I would like it if Celtic charged,say,£40 for non ST holders and told them that for the extra £15 they would qualify for a £50 discount on a ST next year.

We need to use a wee bit of originality in our marketing. Instead of punishing people for not having a ST,give them an incentive to buy one.
