Juranovic and disruptive publicity

261

Nothing makes sense about the reports that Manchester United and Chelsea are considering a bid for Josip Juranovic.  It is just less than a year since the player signed for Celtic.  For much of that time he played at left back, a position he had never played before and did not enjoy.

33 starts across domestic and European football later, precious few of them in his favourable position, he has two of the highest spenders in European football keen, after Atletico Madrid were supposedly interested?  While he was an important part of the story last season, his impact was significantly less than at least four other new arrivals.  I’m not seeing the evidence leading to such interest.

What we know for sure is that this publicity is disruptive.  I am also sure the newspapers reporting did not make the story up, there is a source of the disruption.  Jura will move on eventually, but it would take a spectacular bid to convince Celtic that time was now.  In the meantime, all they can do is try to disuade the disrupter.

Good luck to Dundee United in Alkmaar tonight.  I suspect they are not ready for the challenges of away games in Europe, but reaching the Conference playoff round would be a huge achievement.  It would also give them a chance of stemming the flow or red ink all over their accounts.

We’ve too many teams chasing too few supporters – ”

Although things are not always as simple as they seem, what you said, IMO, does seem to be the case.

FORTY TWO Clubs in a country of five million looks like too many…..by about thirty !

I am not sure what the solution is. Amalgamation ? Celtic and Sevco combined? :-)))))( I know those two wouldn`t have to but the principle is the same).

PS That Utd supporter I mentioned agreed with same town clubs joining. He said: Call the new team `Dundee` after Dundee and ` United` after his Club and the new team ` Dundee United` would play at Tannadice as it is a more modern stadium. No problem.

Hello again all you young rebels.

From a slightly warmer Melbourne, 15 degs and warming up, still

a couple of weeks till spring, but early signs now of growth and a

    fruitful year ahead.

I suppose a bit like our Celtic supporting lives, doesn’t always come

to fruition, but the hopeful apprehension it gives us all is worth it.

So on to Killie , plastic, brutal tackling, MIB ffs, I’ll be happy with a

injury free 0-1 to the bhoys and leaving that hunhole with a SPRING

    in their step.

Dundee United slumped to the joint heaviest European defeat by a Scottish side as AZ Alkmaar marched into the Europa Conference League play-offs.

It equals 7-0 losses by Hibernian against Malmo in 2013 and Celtic to Barcelona three years later.

  11. SPL — Aggressive play is agricultural tackling.

People watching and waiting to take 10 yard run ups to knee someone in the lower back.

Everywhere else — Aggressive play is being energetic / direct / competing for the ball.

Putting in the effort / fighting for every ball / working the ref / making it hard for the opposition as a team.

SPL = Insular / lazy / lacking ambition / scared of the new.

SPL = No confidence when dealing with the new / different / unknown.

SPL = Too much money for time served journeymen.

DU @ home — gained confidence as the game went on / grew into the game.

DU @ away — started brightly based on the home game but couldn’t handle the change when AZ got their tails up. The confidence they had was a veneer and it snapped in full public view. DU had a fair bit of talent in their team and bench but they had no coaching / set up / conditioning / preparation.

JR = SPL star manager / does things a bit different / reads books.

JR = Real world amateur / DU had no coaching to fall back on.

A lot of hysterical nonsense being spouted today about the demise of Scottish Football. All because of one humiliating result in Europe.

Two seasons ago Dundee United were in the Championship. Because of the results of Scottish clubs in Europe in recent years, the country co-efficient has risen to a level where the top 5 in a league of 12 clubs got a shot at European competition.

This season, for the first time, Scotland will have 3 clubs in group stage football. A Scottish club contested last season’s Europa League final.

Scotland recently qualified for their first major tournament in 22 years and came very close to winning a place in this year’s World Cup.

Clubs from top European leagues are now spending millions on young Scottish players at an unprecedented level.

Yes, last night was an embarrassing result for United, but at that level, it happens from time to time. All I read on CQN is posters gloating and turning the result into an attack on Scottish Football in general and demeaning our game to suit their own agenda.

    I don’t buy it.

I hope Rangers get humped by PSV. That is MY agenda.

  17. I agree Tom.

As I see it, the qualifying rounds no matter who it is, Scottish teams are just not ready.

We are lucky not to have to play them this year, what a win/win it is to be straight into groups.

  18. TMcL @ 10.24

And I thought you just happy clapped for the board.

Our failures are in plain sight and you grift for baubles / cheap plaudits.

Our players might be getting better after a 30 year hiatus.

But our teams are still Bronskis who are scared fartless by the new / the different / the exotic — the SPL is an insular backwater and nobody wants to improve things.

Just more of the same — those at the top just take their cut and do nothing.

That is the SPL / that is modern day Nat-land.

  20. Motherwell’s defeat home and away and Dundee Utd’s embarrassment do not do anything to promote our league with Sky.

And it was an embarrassment last night. In every single aspect of the game Dundee Utd were totally outclassed.

Last season the average attendance in the English women’s league, was 2,500

That’s not bad. After the Lionesses winning that last competition I’d expect this years average to go up. Coupled with its promotion by the major tv channels and radio, it won’t be long til they earn more than Scottish clubs and players. It would be interesting to see average Scottish attendances (mens) without Celtic and thems being included

  22. St Johnstone’s average attendance is 4209.

Why would Sky or anybody else pay more than they do now for Ross County at home to St Mirren or the like? Three quarters empty stadia is not a good look, Scottish football is virtually running on fresh air with a pittance from Hampden and TV companies, even when you are perennial Champions there’s no money in the game.

  24. Caught the highlights of Kilmarnock’s home game against Dundee United. The pitch if anything has deteriorated since the last time they were in the SPL. It’s so bad that if it really were a carpet you would not hang it over your clothesline for fear your neighbours realised you lived a threadbare existence. Or had beaten your carpet to within an inch of its’ life. Make that a millimetre. Livvy not much better, small mercy that the Accies are stuck in the lower divisions, or that would have been another nineteen league games on poor quality surfaces. Things we can change, quality of pitches, standard of refereeing, structure of the top division in Scotland. Oh, and our relationship with our match broadcasters. Or maybe not.

    Good point.

If Sky/BT paid Scottish football double what they do now, (still a pittance compared to down south) Scottish clubs could well afford to halve, maybe three quarter less the current ticket price.
