Juranovic and disruptive publicity

261

Nothing makes sense about the reports that Manchester United and Chelsea are considering a bid for Josip Juranovic.  It is just less than a year since the player signed for Celtic.  For much of that time he played at left back, a position he had never played before and did not enjoy.

33 starts across domestic and European football later, precious few of them in his favourable position, he has two of the highest spenders in European football keen, after Atletico Madrid were supposedly interested?  While he was an important part of the story last season, his impact was significantly less than at least four other new arrivals.  I’m not seeing the evidence leading to such interest.

What we know for sure is that this publicity is disruptive.  I am also sure the newspapers reporting did not make the story up, there is a source of the disruption.  Jura will move on eventually, but it would take a spectacular bid to convince Celtic that time was now.  In the meantime, all they can do is try to disuade the disrupter.

Good luck to Dundee United in Alkmaar tonight.  I suspect they are not ready for the challenges of away games in Europe, but reaching the Conference playoff round would be a huge achievement.  It would also give them a chance of stemming the flow or red ink all over their accounts.

I’m sure any increase in TV revenue would not result in reduced ticket prices.

    No doubt

League reconstruction is years overdue. Two leagues of 16 pro teams is more than enough.

    I totally agree

Playing each other 4 times is crap.

There’s no way sky will allow a drop of ‘OF’ fixtures, we are prisoners to their desire

Don’t necessarily disagree but would that mean a 30 game season – 15 at home a reduction of 5 ? – home games = reduced income.

Quite an allusion you created there, the idea of having to iron your pitch before the game. And I had almost forgotten that Rugby Park used to be a good place to play football. Doubt if Tommy Burns would have sanctioned going plastic when he was down there. You would think this is one problem we could address, could resolve, but we would both be wrong. Scottish football runs on inertia.

There is no money in the SPL because the SFA / SPFL do not sell the SPL.

And while we are at it SKY do not sell the SPL.

The sell “our” bigotry to the rest of the world.

Four games a season is all we are worth to SKY at the moment.

And guess what — “we” lap it up.

We get a pittance from SKY because that is all we ask / that is all we can see.

Biggest issue is that we only seem to have one contract — it all seems to go through SKY.

Why are their no figures on our overseas contacts — or is it a case that we don’t have any?

Why don’t we sell different packages to different companies?

Is it a case that we are taking the cheap option — SKY pay for the OB set up and then the BBC just ponce off their leftovers?

The whole situation is amateur hour by a blazer class that doesn’t care as long as they get their freebies / hospitality — the football is secondary as long as they get their new tie to wear.

Nobody wants to ask the hard question — what does the performance of the SFA / SPFL tell us about the way that modern day Scotland is organised and the performance levels that individuals have to deliver to keep themselves in steady employment?

We are the land of the second rate / the knuckle cruncher / the don’t rock the boat / the time server / the happy clapper / the excuse monger.

Football just has a bigger / better watched window to show off its inadequacies.

It’s all about money. The smaller teams just can’t see the wood for the trees. They sold their souls for “The Old Firm” to visit twice a season. Forget how utterly terrible the football is, just count the cash. No wonder crowds are so bad. Funny thing is, with the split, they might only get one visit. We all performed better in Europe before the cut down league. People try to argue the point by saying the Sheep and United did well after it was brought in but they forget the teams were born in the old system. Last night summed up how terrible our league is. United simply couldn’t defend. I would have been going mental if my girls team left so many players unmarked.

Think it was Brown the previous chairman or CEO who put in the carpet. Don’t know of a single Killie who approves of the carpet. The groundsman will still not water the pitch against us, sticky pitch stops wingers doing a good job😕

  11. When Sky were paying proper money, late ‘90s early ‘00s, provincial clubs like Dundee had World Cup winners playing for them. The standard of the whole league was better. If Sky wanted to, they could make our whole league a lot better by paying more.

The English Premiership competes with other major leagues because Sky pay them plenty.

If they wanted to they could make Scottish football a whole lot better…..if they wanted to

  12. Gene,

Yes that is true and would be a stumbling block. I wonder if they could do something with the Scottish Cup, maybe a group stage like the League Cup, make it regional and have a few juicy derbies? Ayr v Killie, Dundee v United or even a Celtic competition with teams from Ireland and Wales. There just HAS to be something better than this.

  13. 7 @ 11.48

Dundee wasted money on has beens looking for a pension.

No thoughts on real player / youth investment.

Just guys they had seen on the TV.

  14. SKY take the EPL seriously because the EPL are serious players.

SKY treat the SPL like amateurs because we / they behave like amateurs.

SKY pays the EPL fortunes because they book “all” their UK / 32 counties SKY Sports contracts to the EPL — we are seen as very much a secondary source of subscriptions.

Too many people in Scotland would pay for SKY even if they didn’t show the SPL.

Easy meat for a very capitalist company.

Streaming is the way forward — but it will be difficult and complex.

PL / the CFC Board don’t do difficult and complex — no matter the revenues.

  15. The latest SkY Sports deal would be ok if it was just the SPFL that benefited from it ,but these other lower division clubs actually get cash for what ,oh I forgot there is a few good teams in the Championship that deserve a slice of the cake.

.A new TV deal that will see 38 Scottish Premiership games beamed in Asia has been announced – with Celtic at the centre of attention.

Japan’s new Premier League streamer, SPOTVNOW, have announced that they have struck an agreement with the SPFL for the 2022/23 campaign. The channel states that there will be a big emphasis on Celtic matches as the Hoops grow their following in the Far East.

Ange Postecoglou left the J-League for Glasgow last summer after three years with Yokohama Marinos. The Aussie-Greek has taken full advantage of his knowledge of the Japanese market by unearthing some hidden gems. Kyogo Furuhashi was the first Japanese player to follow Postecoglou to Scotland after joining from Vissel Kobe in a £4.5million deal at the start of last season. He immediately became a huge fans’ favourite, scoring 20 goals in 33 games to help Celts regain the championship from Rangers’

  17. MM

Did he, well my recollection was it was Celtic as the worst scoreline a Scottish team had suffered in Europe, Celtic in isolation, some time later he may have added Hibs but not the initial comment and anyway how do these comments help the game here, SKY should be chased out the door with their pittance of a TV deal, Club Chairmen/Women need to reject this deal , go it alone if neccessary but no to this deal, more games for less money great idea, and we pay the CEO how much, chase SKY and Doncaster.

  18. 31003

I often wonder whether if we went for summer football we would have more leverage with SKY.

It would give them something to show and would probably improve our chances of doing better in Europe.

Also crowds might be better. I’m sure there are arguements against but I know that looking out the window in January and seeing wind and sleet doesn’t exactly have me jumping off my seat to get to the football.

  19. BSR @ 12.01

Not really — that deal is an outlier and a year late.

Who worked on the deal — was it led by the SPFL / SFA?

The next step would be an enhanced deal in Aus.

Japan deal — how much is it for and how much does the club get?

Is the divi up similar to the SKY deal or do we get extra because of our efforts?

Where are we in China — back in the day / 2015 you couldn’t get a China market feed.

The club is nowhere near doing enough.

Why is the website only available in English and Japanese?

Are we only targeting big islands off the coast of continents?

Why is CTV like hospital radio with pictures — Pals TV?

Joke of an operation — stuff run out of back rooms is more professional.

  20. Dessybhoy

Agree with what you say. We need a moratorium on tv deals. The SLY deal is terrible. I was in the States a couple of weeks ago and ESPN is showing the SPL. The idea of taking SLY’s offer because it is all there is doesn’t wash. Time to get far more clinical and far fewer old pals acts. I would ask, exactly what is our share of the deal? A fraction of what we paid for Ajeti? It’s a joke.

  21. Go tell the Spartim on

When you are the only one bidding then you can offer practically whatever you like, it needs keener more ambitious minds to take us forward, not the bowling club / masonic cabal that “run” scottish football.

Even as a compromise, if Sky (they control it) allowed ppv for all games not covered by them, could they not take a very small percentage (theyre likely using the same production company), and that way both sky get something but more importantly the host team get the majority of any monies. to be honest if its not a local derby or involving Us or triggers broom then there would be little take up.
