Justice and our debt to Hillsborough

352

Justice 30 years later is scarcely justice at all, but those employed in the criminal justice system in May 1985, leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough Disaster, now face proper scrutiny for their actions. Charges have been brought against former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield of South Yorkshire Police, who was match commander on the day, as well as five others.

Included in that number is former Chief Inspector Norman Bettison, charged with allegedly lying about what happened on the day. A subsequent inquiry into the disaster found that a conspiracy to blame dead and innocent fans, while deflecting from the actions of the police, took place.

Duckenfield is charged with the manslaughter of 95 victims. Then-Sheffield Wednesday secretary, Graham Mackrell, is accused of breaching Health and Safety regulations. South Yorkshire Police’s solicitor, Peter Metcalf, is charged with perverting the course of justice, as are two other senior former-police officers, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

There is a long way to go before convictions are secured, but the dogged determination of campaigners and bereaved over three decades is remarkable.

I could add that irresponsible attitudes towards Health and Safety at football grounds, and policing cover-ups, was endemic prior to Hillsborough. Our game changed because of this tragedy as those closely involved were determined to ensure it would. We have a safer game and better-ordered society as a result.

Alves thug booked for leading with the elbow, Beaton wouldn’t have seen that.

Yes he’s better than what they had which isn’t hard. Portugal had a spare man at the back so it was comfy for him and Chile were kicking everything long which was right up his street. Scotland will probably suit him as the ball spends a lot of time in the air. Anybody with pace looking to play in and around him will cause him problems. Him and Jack, whom isn’t a great player on the ball, but will make the Huns more resolute.

I thought the official on the byline was supposed to keep an eye on the keeper staying on his line.

Might as well stick a cabbage there.

Alves is a slow as a week in Rothesay (as I seem to remember).

He is to them defensively as Kolo Toure was to us – Kolo’s last game before us was the Europa League final with Liverpool. He was found out in the 4-3 Motherwell game and didn’t appear much after that.

With pace like Sinclair, Griffiths and Hayes running at Alves over and over again, just count up the free kicks, penalties and yellow cards. He is 36 in November – enough said.

BTW Linfield score in 89th minute for a 1-0 lead to take away from home. Hmmmm …

  13. okay post 9.22pm give you a clue.. the chapels called holy cross.and its in or used to be in dumbartonshire.

It would just be so right for Fiorita to beat them next week. The bigots would get their just deserts and Celtic fans who follow the team all round Europe would keep that proud record going.

Plus we would not have to decontaminate our stadium after the home leg.
