Justice and our debt to Hillsborough

352

Justice 30 years later is scarcely justice at all, but those employed in the criminal justice system in May 1985, leading to the death of 96 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough Disaster, now face proper scrutiny for their actions. Charges have been brought against former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield of South Yorkshire Police, who was match commander on the day, as well as five others.

Included in that number is former Chief Inspector Norman Bettison, charged with allegedly lying about what happened on the day. A subsequent inquiry into the disaster found that a conspiracy to blame dead and innocent fans, while deflecting from the actions of the police, took place.

Duckenfield is charged with the manslaughter of 95 victims. Then-Sheffield Wednesday secretary, Graham Mackrell, is accused of breaching Health and Safety regulations. South Yorkshire Police’s solicitor, Peter Metcalf, is charged with perverting the course of justice, as are two other senior former-police officers, Donald Denton and Alan Foster.

There is a long way to go before convictions are secured, but the dogged determination of campaigners and bereaved over three decades is remarkable.

I could add that irresponsible attitudes towards Health and Safety at football grounds, and policing cover-ups, was endemic prior to Hillsborough. Our game changed because of this tragedy as those closely involved were determined to ensure it would. We have a safer game and better-ordered society as a result.

Celtic PLC’s motivation for refusing to participate in the distribution of tickets for Linfield has got absolutely nothing to do with the safety of Celtic supporters but only to insulate themselves from any heavy handedness from UEFA and protect potential CL income. Simples. Any Celtic supporter that cannot grasp this is an idiot.

For the purposes of this argument, we’re being asked to consider the notion of buying back a 31-y-o, on EPL wages, who even his admirers acknowledge is inconsistent, who has been frozen out at his EPL club since November 2015, who ended up on loan at a club whose manager supposedly wanted to buy him

    ================

Please point out where anyone has advocated paying Aiden McGeady EPL wages? The great thing about signing a player is that we negotiate with them on our terms or they don’t come.

In case you haven’t noticed, its a highly competitive market with massive competition for promising players(eg. Henry Onyekuru).

McGeady is 31, not 40. We have a short term objective to reach the Champions League.

All people are saying is that he is better than a number of players in the squad currently and is a potential alternative for Roberts, who would be the priority signing.

That he has been frozen out at Everton is irrelevant. Some of our best signings have been players who have found themselves frozen out/unwanted at their own clubs.

You’re also ignoring the fact the guy has been getting rave reviews in the Championship which is the last evidence we have to go on.

Aiden McGeady? Aiden McGeady? Surely a joke. Never in a month of wednesdays…

  16. If Patrick Roberts doesn’t happen I’d have Aiden back in a heartbeat. Good player.

  17. McGeady would probably sacrifice wages to come back. It’s no secret he wants to be back in Glasgow.

It’d be the right move for him.

No one is saying he should be a priority signing.

Its the hysterical reaction to the suggestion of signing him from some that needs to be highlighted.

The part time CEO’s who now think every single player needs to have a resale value are a particular favourite. Thankfully they werent around when Lubo was signing.

McGeady looks after himself and still has a lot to offer at club level and international level.

But its still Roberts for me if at all possible… :)

Timaloy29…Right move for him, wrong move for Celtic…Aiden wants his comforts now…he was a long time ago and I don’t think BR would be looking at him, regardless of wages. I believe many of our supporters would be disappointed with a decision to bring him back. However, would make for an interesting ‘great signing/welcome home Aiden’ versus ‘nae ambition/biscuit-tin mentality’ argument…

  22. I don’t mind paying my fair share to inland revenue but to be ripped off for 8k on a redundancy payment they have admitted was over paid to them but will not refund while I’m on JSA that they think I should be on, which I have as yet to claim is rediculous.

Anyone know how I can go about reclaiming my due return from IR. Even getting back 8k from them they are still making a killing over and above that which I’m happy to pay as it’s due to them at the current rates.

I think a guy who excites and gets fans off their seats is a BR type player. And the type of player the manager would thrive on trying to get the best out of.

If theres one guy that could do that right now its BR.

No disrespect to Brandanes, just a memory of holidays there as a kid.

Visited several times more recently as a ref when the team joined the Caledonian League. Even took a young lady one weekend but didn’t see much of the island after the game if i’m honest.

Always a big day out as I drove the 75 miles each way from Edinburgh to Wemyss Bay, paid for parking and the ferry myself (no expenses in the Caley). The return ferry was always interesting if the away team had lost !
