Juxtaposition of Keane with wannabes elsewhere

Worst Rangers [sic]team in history?

Worst Rangers [sic]chief executive in history?
Check.

Worst Rangers [sic]fans in history?
Oh, please.  They have played their part to perfection.

Worst Rangers [sic]manager in history?
Who, Ally the Great Enabler?  No way.

Charles Green would not have any authority at Ibrox if Ally McCoist didn’t act as his enabler last year.  While every Celtic fan with a keyboard was typing “Can they really be so stupid again?” Ally was cutting a deal for almost 5% of the share capital of the company [sic].  None of this would be possible without Ally.  If you see him, buy him a pie.

The juxtaposition was pointed out to me:

19 years after John Keane stepped forward with an amount of money very precious to him..

With no guarantee it would solve our problems…

Or that he would see a penny of it again (for the record, he hasn’t, and he is unlikely to)…

A very different history played out across the city.

Today’s Herald told us the group trying to overthrow the Sevco board contains Jim McColl and that, “McColl is one of Scotland’s richest people, but he won’t spend his own money”.

The world is full of rich men who will not spend their own money.  Long may they squabble over the Ibrox debris.

Our honorary chairman, John Keane, waved to the Celtic Park crowd before letting the league flag fly high, a direct consequence of putting his money where his mouth was.

  1. When some of our own have been known to take money from some dubious anti Celtic publications, the following story about John Greig is worth the telling.

Prior to publishing its first edition, Sunday Sport engaged Greig as a sports columnist.

As soon as above first edition came through his letterbox and he saw its content, Greig, for all his faults, told the publishers to put their money where the sun don’t shine.

Never knew that about Captain John. Fair dos. The Sport wasnt even fit for yesterday’s rubbish- but it was no worse than some of the papers some great Celts have taken a penny or six from

Tells us something about our society that the Sun is its biggest selling newspaper and at one point Sport published seven days a week.

  8. wee story here about Wim van Hangem I heard about 20 year ago and no it was not from someone who knew someone etc. this came from a lhad who was there.

We played them in a game to celebrate an anniversary of their one and only EC win. After the game some of our players were standing at the bar when across comes this gentleman wearing a long trench coat, disnae even look like the star player he was.

Our players obviously recognise him and get engaged in conversation. He offers to buy a round which was instantly accepted and leaves right then.

At the end of the evening the players call for the bill to which the bartender tells them that it was taken care of as Wim asked for it to be put on his tab.

A class act both on and off the park.

1970 Milan – it still hurts. And after 43 years I’m guessing that hurt won’t ever go away. In my opinion we lost because of 2 reasons:

    1. When we beat Leeds in the semis we thought we’d won the cup. We even did a lap of honour round Hampden for goodness sake.

    2. We didn’t play George Connelly in the final, even though he had started both semis against Leeds.

As an aside, there is no video footage of the first leg at Leeds. Can anyone explain why, in 1970, a European Cup semi-final between the champions of Scotland and the champions of England was not televised?

  10. Glendaly, they have been dead or over a year, there wouldn’t be much to work with.

*naw it wisnae I listened tae it on the wireless. I had been promised a ticket for Elland Road but at the last minute was let down.

We hadn’t been long back fae the colonies had a new baby and just bought a house. As we walked doon tae the chippy that night Mrs.TT said to me that if we got to the final she would pay my way as she had some money saved up.

    And she did.

  16. Quonno

I cannot argue with that. The Sun’s influence is , hopefully, on the wain ( though at my new workplace it is the only rag that anyone seems to buy) but it and the Record will be two of my least favourite things until I die.

    Phyllis Dietrichson

I have seen the goal – and indeed the second , by GC, that was inexplicably disallowed fairly recently – but nothing else of that game since the Sunday afterwards when it was shown again . Those who were there said it was better than Hampden and that Jinky was in Red Star/Real Madrid class form.

Don’t beat yourself up about it….there is a simpler reason why we didn’t win.

An old uncle of mine travelled over with the team on the flight……he told me many years later that big TG and Jinky threatened not to play because promised bonus’s for getting to the final had not been paid…..only after many arguments and counter arguments did they agree to play. Not, I am sure you’ll agree, the best preparation for an important cup final

134K was the official attendance – your mistake might not have been far of the mark.

Was in the North Enclosure (packed in like a sardine) – guys were getting through turnstiles in 2’s with ticket and £5/10 notes. Times that night I ended up 3 steps down as the crowd surged (feet never touched the ground).

The gates were also forced at the Mount Florida End – thousands allegedly poured in.

Gene’s thanks pal – first time I’ve seen that goal. How come it’s Italian commentary though?

  22. tricoloured ribbon,

    If you are still around.

Donegal, particularly round the Rosses, was at it’s most beautiful during the recent tropical weather.

Ard Macha, former poster and, I’m sure, lurker of this parish, would testify to that.

As regards the sod of turf that marked the Renaissance of Celtic Park ; there is a strong CQN connection behind that story, which Paul67 may choose to relate.x

Can’t be certain (Tallybhoy or SoT might confirm) – think Italian T V ran a highlights programme then not unlike Sky do now covering EC games. Think they tended to concentrate on the teams that had played against Inter/ AC.
