Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier. He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.
Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.
He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.
“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.
“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.
“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.
“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

Le Kazakh
Worked and lived in Kazakhstan for approx. 14 months. Didn’t enjoy one moment of it and actually resigned so i could leave as i was refused a transfer. Quite a few of my colleagues didn’t last a month before requesting to be returned to Europe. It is major pain to get anywhere roads are basically a collection of very large holes in a straight line. It was either freezing cold or boiling hot apart from a brief respite in the spring when it poured with rain and everything turned to mud. I worked in the oil industry but unfortunately wasn’t one of the ones you know who make lots of money. True it is a massive country and I visited relatively little of it. The one good thing I remember was the people everyone i worked with was extremely friendly and everyone greets each other everyday with a handshake (none masonic variety) i still keep in contact with a lot of the Kazakh guys i worked with most of them wanted to leave and have subsequently transferred to the UK or Western Europe. Anyway best of luck to you

It’s very hard to estimate how much cash we’ve taken in recently. 20m champs league + say 5m gate receipts for those games, 12m wanyama, 5m hooper, 2.5m kelvin. 44.5m above what we would earn in a season without European football?
But of course these ‘good years’ help to balance out the bad years where champions league football has not been achieved or years when we haven’t sold big (like mcgeady, Petrov, Ki etc). We also don’t fill our stadium anymore and hospitality tickets must only be anywhere close to being sold out on European nights.
So although we’ve had a great year financially, not a huge proportion of this cash will be used to buy players.
Remember also it’s easy to say balde cost 2m, but when you consider wages/agent fees/other clauses he may be closer to a 4m investment.
There is a fine line between selling top players for cash, and still being able to qualify for the champions league. Our performances against Elfsborg proving that.
I’m certain if we win this play off tie we will spend cash on players. Maybe up to 4 or 5 million I would estimate.

personally I would be happy if we spent some of the money on two or three players
and as for the wages, well we let quite a few players go already so that makes up for some of the wages already
but if you want to pay five years salary from the current kitty (and I don’t know why you do incidentally) then buy players that cost less, I still haven’t seen anyone say buy Ronaldo or rooney, but we have lost a 30 goals a season strker and IMO it would be risky not to replace him with similar
we haven’t had a center half since big bobo and it would be nice to buy a decent one, we have signed plenty of duffers though
alternatively don’t buy a centre forward or a centre half and just be cannon fodder in the only tournament that really means anything nowadays for the club

You said you lived in Leeds for a while and support Leeds United.
Did you know that Leeds legend Billy Bremner was a mad Celtic supporter?
Before he passed away someone asked him what his biggest regret in football was.
He replied something like this – “Never having had the chance to pull on the green and white hoops.”
HH!!

I repeat, you’re the one who said spend all the profit on 3 players

There is a flight from London to Almaty (former capital) operated by local company Air Astana. Also British Airways do the flights from London to Almaty. If you flight to Almaty, then you need to take another flight to Astana which takes about 1 hour 20 mins. You also can get to Astana from Almaty by train which is 12 hours 30 mins. I am not sure, but some of mates were using Russian companies. So for instance, you can flight from Edinburgh to Moscow and Moscow – Astana.
I myself was using KLM flights, from Leeds to Amsterdam and then to Almaty.
There is a cheaper option: from say Edinburgh or Glasgow to Riga by Ryanair, and then Riga to Astana by Air Baltic. But I am not sure whether the option is appropriate at the moment, but many folks travelled this way before.
Le Kazakh .. Looking into flights but I think the visa will be the problem.
LE KAZAKH
Thanks for the general advice-and the welcome to be afforded those of us who travel.
If you have only been used to Leeds over these parts,Glasgow will blow you away.
I reckon that if you come over, you will be surprised by how friendly we are, really.
PS-don’t wear blue and white!
hen1rik @16:41
I looked into that but don’t understand what it means?
Any idea?

I was on a business trip to Astana and Almaty a few weeks ago. Back again 1st week of September so I will miss the game there.
Great cities, lovely people with absolutely no resemblance to anything in the offensive Borat film.
And only 1 hour by Air Astana flight from Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Hoppy daze.
I’m off “outwith”.

Wee Billy tried his best to get into those Hallowed Hoops!
Keep your friends close an your kazahkstanies closer.
So any suggestions on how to destroy the hun ascendancy infrastructure that is being reborn. You know the one that done Scottish clubs out of at least 22 trophies fairly and
has done irreparable damage to Scottish football in a bigoted effort to obliterate
the history of Jock Stein. Unless a New Firm thing is your thing of course.

Re Billy Bremner, I was surprised to find out he was from the Raploch in Stirling.
A cousin of his i did some work for and used to run the local Raploch CSC was telling me this and as you said he was a massive Celtic fan, pity he slipped through the net.
Welcome to Kazakhstan Bhoys and Ghirls!

just looked back to see what I actually said
the balance is how much we can pay for a centre forward and centre half and a central defensive mid fielder
you are the one who interpreted this as the transfer fee only and no wages allowance
incidentally you have ignored the wages saved by the players who have moved on this year too and you have also assumed that we should sign players at 15 million quid
quite a few assumptions there
spend what we earn has been the mantra, should it be changed because we earned a few quid for a change?
I know I’m going to get slaughtered for this but why haven’t we tried to sign Leigh Griffiths?
We all know he is a complete bam but look how many he scored last season for Hibs.
Hibs! Look at them now.
Bhoys you just can’t get away from them even in Central Asia
in the 3rd century BC a Hunnic Empire covered the whole of Kazakhstan .

I would love Celtic to spend £15+m immediately, but I also want us to use any good seasons to secure our long term future financially …..our Board have a strategy (like any other well run Club) and, due to our onging support, the future is bright …… that strategy has worked really well, and will continue to do so, if we stick to it……Scottish Football is not a revenue generator, and we need to be that little bit careful …… with the money being spent in EPL etc, we are not going to win the CL for a few years….LOL
Was the ASA decision today about the complaint they were deid or another one. People on FB say it is another case.

I will not oppose you. You maybe right. The infrastructure, especially in rural areas is, let’s say, not that developed). I heard that in Aktau the mud is everywhere.
It’s pity you didn’t visit other regions, I am sure you would enjoy the mountains of Almaty, ski resorts, deserts and so on.
The country has a lot to offer. It’s a relatively young state, with it’s own problems. But there are some achievements definitely. The GDP form early 00 was growing steadily (about 7% on average) which placed the country amongst the fastest growing economies in the world.
For those folks who will come here: if you have some spare time go to Borovoe lake. It’s just couple of hours away from Astana. There is high way that connects Borovoe and Astana. We call this place “second Switzerland”. You can enjoy the forest, lake and the nature around. Do some hiking, organize a tour on bicycle.
And I have to highlight this: safety issue: in Astana you can walk with no fear of being attacked or something. The police is monitoring the city. And I have to say, especially in Astana, I will not say about other regions, the crime level is quite low. Of course, no need to walk at night on the outskirts of the city pushing your luck) Like in any other big city you should be at least careful and prudent.
If Finnbogason is that good. Great goal scoring record blah blah. Why has no one else bougt him.
The Moon Bhoys
You are welcome!

-No football team has ever been the finished article. EVERY team could be improved
But it seems to me that in the current financial climate a club of Celtic’s [financial] size will find it impossible to team build; as every 2-3 years we will half the team.

What position does he play ….?…….hehe
Mags
No its not possible.
Neither is spending money without going bust.
Improving your team …whats the point as you cant teach perfection ?
Playing too many CL games as they cost a lot to put on
We have already spend 4.9m on a second division portugese player ? Amido Jackanory.
And why are you always talking about the huns ?
I think we should start by giving the GB a right good hiding.

If you want the £30m to include the transfer fees, signing on fees, agents fees, wages & bonuses for 3 players over 5 years you’re looking at roughly the quality of player we’ve already signed this window.
Well the working week over and most meaningful contribution was a farting noise made by my chair.

haha, I have been to Glasgow, mate! I really loved it. In general, I consider Scotland as a nation of beauty and great history! Next year, hopefully, I will repeat my trip to Scotland.
you probably heard already, Le Tour de France will start in Leeds and will stay in England for 3 days, so I hope I will get there by that time!
P.S. Thanks for advice! But White and Blue are my favorite colours)))))
