Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

“I think many of our own ‘fans’ have a bigger fixation on Old Firm/Rangers than our management do.”

    Absolutely!!!

The frenzy and attendance will prove this if we draw the “phoenix” club in a cup.

A little more to it than that. You can take my word for it. Let’s say we dodged a bullet.

Wilson was very quick …got him out if a lot of trouble

Again, I am not writing him off. Lennons reulctance to use him, however, suggests he is not the man for the short term nor the direct Hooper replacement.

Which is fine by me, but hastens the need to get someone in who can do the business for us NOW.

    Not rocket science either.

so how much did we take in CL money

    add big vics fee

    add hooper money

    add kelvin money

and subtract the money paid so far for players

the balance is how much we can pay for a centre forward and centre half and a central defensive mid fielder

    …………….

Lets say for talkings sake thats £30m.

We buy 2 players at £15m each, obviously on 5 year deals to get our moneys worth. Now players of that quality will want big wages, but to make the figures simpler to work with, lets say £50k (though lets be honest a £15m player will want way more than that) a week. So thats £100k (not including win bonuses) a week on 2 guys or £5.2m a year and £26m for the 5 years (not including signing on fees, loyalty cash etc.

Now can you guarantee we will qualify for the CL every year to help pay their wages, that they won’t get injured or that the other players in the squad won’t go tonto at 2 guys earning way more than them?

Bottom line, players cost way more than the actual transfer fee.

I can’t see us going into the CL and the season without a recognised striker, let’s hope he is one that can put a few bums on seats failing that one who knows where the net is!

    Sure, it’s a failure, but it’s only a gamble if it’s deliberate.

My sense is that the failure is largely out of our control, determined by the dynamics of the transfer market, but I stand to be corrected if you or others know better.

Cant understand what we are doing selling fit players and bringing in crocs, it may make us a whole load of dough, but it will leave us very vulnerable when the real action starts, we need to bring in guys who are ready to hit the ground running, and we need them now, c’mon Peter, finger out time.

I think that without Hooper and Wanyama we are going to struggle this year. We will be back to pre FC Sion calibre. Their replacements will take another few years to bed in as thats where we are at. We used to have 5 year plans ..well I thought that was spin even then. Now it seems we are Barras FC.

I would take the 50 million quid and enploy a team of private detectives to find out why Celtic always turn a blind eye to hun machinations but never our own.

How much prize money have we been diddled out of during the Murray era ?

    More than 50m ?

Would we even need billionaires on board if the plc fought our corner fairly. I dont believe so.

So there you have it. I would spend the 50m on Celtic fans getting the same treatmentg as demented hun scum at Celtic park.

Celtic fans getting justice and a fair game of football. Past and present

And a wage structure that rewards players who have developed and delivered.

Is that too much to ask for?

  21. Hello from Kazakhstan, folks! Having read some of the posts, I can’t stop laughing))))))) Someone mentioned that his acquaintance, who worked in Kazakhstan, stated that the country is the most horrible place on earth or something. Well, as far as I know those guys, foreigners, who work in O&G sector earn a lot of money. Many of them stay here for a long time. The country is huge. The guy, probably, worked in the West Kazakhstan. You guys, will be playing in the capital city Astana. The stadium is almost a brand new, was built in 2009 with the capacity of 30 000. Not the biggest apparently, but still quite compact and decent one. Please do some research on google, you’ll find a lot of information. If some of you will travel to the country to support your club, then feel free to ask questions on the country. I will give you all the relevant information. BTW, I am a fan of Leeds United, so I am not biased towards Shakhter Karagandy)))

Let’s look at alternative (non-Celtic) examples to remove our subjectivity.

Thus far, Chelsea have failed to sing Rooney.

Man Utd have failed to sign Fabregas.

Arsenal have failed to sign Suarez.

Is that because of the parsimony of the assorted boards, or are other influences at play?

On debt, there is no medium term prospect of Celtic being in debt, let alone a fear of it.

We are now in the position where we can’t spend the stuff fast enough.

  24. We are not Man U,Arsenal nor Chelsea

Besides which they are trying to buy from each other

Plenty of other deals being done

The above is not a relevant analogy IMO

  26. I’m still a wee bit confused(no surprise there, ed), as to why Kazakhstan is a member of UEFA.

After the break-up of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the country became a full member of FIFA and the Asian Confederation in 1994.

In 2000 it became an associate member of UEFA, being admitted as a full member in 2002.

The country is located in Central Asia, and the eastern part borders China.

It is 4000 Miles away and the only flight is 5 days before the game. Who gives a monkeys what your country is like.

  30. @ Tallybhoy, coz 15%, or slightly more lays within Europe. Turkey, if I am right, has even less territory that is located in Europe, but still the country plays in UEFA.

  31. Couple of points lads, put the elf game in perspective, halfway through their season and Swedish champs ( home park astro)!! I for one would take 1-0 0-0 before a ball was kicked!! Do I think we will strengthen…. absolutely and I believe we will have the striker in place before the next round, though I wouldn’t bet on Wilson being replaced ( think the ex wolves was THE replacement , would also love a Paul Mc Stay/ Liam Miller type player who can pick a pass and open up defences.

On another matter am I the only one who skips bye Kojo The blowhards posts???

  32. The Battered Bunnet on

So we have a different perspective. Hey ho.

If we come out of August without signing a credible replacement for Hooper I’ll be in the car park.

If we come out of August WITH a credible replacement for Wanyama, I’ll carry you next time you do the West Highland Way :¬)

Our business is far from done this summer, but events have yet to play out.
