Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

I don’t disagree and like most on here im not suggesting we sign Ronaldo or pay 50k a week in wages, im suggesting that we replace hooper and sign a journeyman centre half

surely the most conservative fans amongst us would not say that is going overboard

it would be embarrassing to go into the CL without replacing these two

but I am not asking for Ronaldo and kompany

I don’t think anyone is expecting that

There’s a tale I’m goin’ to tell you

All about a brave young man

Who was born and born in Scotland

    That’s where history began

He once cheered the Glasgow Celtic

Just the soon as he could talk

And he’d kick a paper football

Just the soon as he could walk

And his name is Billy Bremner

We will never forget his deeds

He was made to play for Scotland

Now he captains United of Leeds

So he came to Leeds United

And they made Don Revie the boss

All the Elland Road fans were excited

Was he not the first Catholic to captain Scotland????

    green jedi/ 67 heaven

why do you feel that 5 years wages are to be paid for in season one

did we ever sign a player at any time in our history when the wages and transfer fee were all put aside at the moment when we signed that guy

for example when we signed henrik, did we put aside his transfer fee and subsequent salaries in the same season that we signed him

when we signed viduka, did we put aside his transfer fee and also 4 years of his slary in the same season that we signed him

did we do that when we signed hooper (because we didn’t have 30 million in the bank when we signed him)

why would we start to do that now?

of course salries have to be paid, but I think you are seriously mistaken if you think that the salaies are paid in the first season. if im wrong please give me an example of when we have done that previously

I don’t think that we have taken big derks salary and transfer fee and put that in a bank account somewhere

Kazakhstan is a country of more than 100 nations. Kazakhs are the major nation (about ~63% of the population) Russians are the second major ethnic group (~23%) also there are Ukrainians, Germans and so on are living with the country . So those Russians who were born here, in general, they prefer to be referred as Kazakhstanis. Although, when I was studying in the UK, all Kazakhstan students called themselves Kazakhs, strange situation)))

  17. Lhads,

I’d guess we’ve got a budget A (CLGS), B (ELGS) and C (Hee-Haw) depending on which European competition we end up in after the qualifiers.

If I were Celtic, I’d have deals lined up for players falling within B and C depending on how it goes with the Kazakhstan mob. There may be scope for a budget B player before the Quals, but not budget A. He’d need to be a pretty good bet at Budget B, someone considered a difference maker (Van Dijk, for instance) to get approval before we know how good this year’s harvest is.

We know we have European football until Christmas, and we should be good enough to beat the Kazakhs witout further investment. We are about to publish financial results which will enable Celtic to cautiously increase our very successful recent investments in players. We are two games away from a return to the group stages and have provided the manager with a team that should be comfortably good enough to get there.

And the board is doing a bad job????

But it won’t stop me enjoying the up-side of supporting Celtic.

Check the definition of critic. It is not wholly negative. Nor should we be.

  26. As many have pointed out before we have now sold the spine of last year’s team

For me the biggest loss was Victor – then Gary and then Kelvin

The market place would seem to agree with me

We now have to replace these place those players

Personally. I don’t care how much we pay as history tells us some our most expensive buys have flopped whereas we all now how much we paid for KoK and VW

The point is they must be players that NFL actually wants

Some are asking that we pay £5M for Finnbogasson

Yet he only cost £500K this time last year – has he really improved that much in a year?

His club have admitted they need to sell players – so why not play some hard ball?

That way we have more money left to buy other players!

While I would prefer to buy before the game in Asia – the fact is our squad as it stands should be good enough to progress

Watching some of the highlights of our opposition – it seems they like to get crosses in to their opponents box.

So a CB would be my biggest priority for this tie

Why spend at all when your nearest rivals struggle to raise £200K to buy a player, is the strategy being honed to a fine tee.
