Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

  1. @ ASonOfDan: so what, I was living in Leeds for quite a while and was travelling quite often to KZ and back to England. My journey consisted of at least two legs. I was spending 6-7 hours in Schiphol airport, Amsterdam. And it’s ok, you can bear it mate.

I doubt DD would have sat back and watched any other company of his being treated in such a cavalier manner.

The way I heard it Tian Tian’s big daft ‘BF’ is going up to all the keepers, both paws raised, giving it: “Mate, honest to God, I did not even touch her!”

  5. New striker needed?

Money available? Last season’s Champions League dosh banked, £12.5 million for Big Vic banked, £5 million for Gary Hooper banked, £2.5 million for Big Kelv banked. What’s that add up to?????

Alfred Finnbogason (Heerenveen) available for around £5/5.5 million – Heerenveen need the money or so I read. 26 goals in 32 games for Heerenveen in the Eredivsie since being in Holland (standard higher than the SPL!). Before that 12 in 17 whilst with Helsingborg.

Lived in Scotland earlier in his life – and used to watch Hibs with his Dad. So he’s used to the culture!

What the bloody hell are we waiting for?????

Happy with the draw, we need to bring in replacements for the qualifier, I would hope that there was a plan to replace the players we knew were leaving, it must be frustrating for NFL right now.

The hoi polloi are still far more concerned about last summer. Thats why the money will be banked. In fact I would go so far and say its strategic. A lack of old Firm safety net. Basically we cant expect a fair game of football but can expect the plc to bank the money ..Christ sakes we cant even get treated fairly in comparable to the worst of hun scum in our own stadium

    You’re the one who said

“so how much did we take in CL money

    add big vics fee

    add hooper money

    add kelvin money

and subtract the money paid so far for players

the balance is how much we can pay for a centre forward and centre half and a central defensive mid fielder”

PS I just noticed you said 3 players, not 2 so add an extra 50% on to the wages.

  12. Start of season analysis:

    Signings

Not fair to judge any of the incoming signings so far but first impressions are:

Balde is the definition of raw, an athlete who can be used as a weapon in certain tactics but not a high quality footballer. Would be horrified if we splurged £2m or even £1m+ on someone who even before anyone seen him was described as raw/a project.

Van Dijk looks like he could be a classy player but the type that loses concentration and lets players run in behind which could lose us key goals all season long. If he can be refined and improved he could be a top player BUT to do this I think you need a top class defender at the club to learn from, we don’t have this.

Mouyokolo has pleasantly surprised me in the viewings I’ve managed to see of him, he’s an aggressive defender who looks like he’ll attack high balls like Balde, not as big or strong but useful none-the-less and the advantage of being a freebie.

Boerrigter is a classy player and will tear up the SPL if he can bed in and be a weapon in Europe. Hopefully he stays injury free once he gets back.

We can replace Hooper if we spend £4-5m I hope no doubt about that and I actually think that would be the prudent thing to do rather than hope to find a gem for £1-2m.

Wanyama is irreplaceable, he will go on to be sold for more than the £12m we got for him, I have no doubt about that.

We NEED a striker (a goalscorer – preferably a complete striker who can hold the ball up, score and generally lead the line but that doesn’t come around very often).

I don’t actually think we need to replace Wilson short term but longer term we must. Mulgrew, Ambrose, Van Dijk and Mouyokolo are veering for 2 spots with youngsters in reserve and Lustig capable.

We need to bring in a midfielder – going from what seemed like our strongest area no looks a bit weak in that all the players remaining are same-y. Brown will give you desire and drive but isn’t the most talented footballer. Ledley quietly and effectively goes about his game and gets on the score-sheet a decent amount but isn’t a true defensive or attacking weapon. Kayal looked to be the complete midfielder when he arrived (as did Juarez for a few games!) but that he changed. He’s well off the boil.

We now have no defensive wall in Wanyama and we have nobody in the team with a bit of flair and creativity other than Commons. We need preferably both but that’s probably unachievable.

We do need to score from more crosses next season, the strikers have been rubbish at getting on the end of crosses and the wingers/fullbacks delivery must take some of the blame. But with Derk and how often our full backs get forward we should be scoring a lot more headers.

Delighted with the draw , apply ourselves properly ( even with the team that faced the swedes) and we should be going through.

Another go in the champions league will be absoloutley tremendous for our club on all fronts.

Folks calm down about signings , a bit of patience required.

@ Tallybhoy, coz 15%, or slightly more lays within Europe. Turkey, if I am right, has even less territory that is located in Europe, but still the country plays in UEFA.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The distance to Istanbul, from where I am, is approx 1500 kms. Astana is nearly 5000 kilometres distant.

    1500 kms = Europe

    5000 kms = Central Asia.

    Cmon the Hoops!

  21. I feel it going to be impossible to get the right players in, in such a short period of time.

We always seem to be rebuilding. Will there ever be a finished article?

You work about the lack of homework done on research for players. The availability of players is another problem- then there is the question of wether they want to come and play in Scotland.

Doyle and Sharp don’t cut it for me.

Now we need a replacement for big Kelvin.

Question. Are we gonna be able to do all this this year, I’m the next few weeks? Bring players in, and settle them – bed them in?

Before they allowed us to join UEFA, it was proved by some committee of scientist that the West part of the country is located in Europe (about 15% I guess). But most of the territory is Central Asia, true.
