Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

Celtic are the established anti-establishment team.

We run our own matters our own way. Sometimes we screw it up, but there’s been little of that in recent years.

What we don’t do is demand that other folk pay for our dreams, then demand that the same other folk pay bail us out of our self-induced nightmares. We ask for no favours, and expect none. Our aim is betterment, but we accept our own shortcomings all the same.

I’d say we were amongst the most self-respecting football club’s in Europe. If we get respect for that, it doesn’t make us part of the “establishment”. Indeed, the evidence indicates we are respected highly in Europe, while being disdained locally.

Perhaps the local establishment could learn a thing or two from us…

    “The Celtic vision?”

No idea. Ask someone on the board.

Football players by nature are greedy and they will mostly go where the money is. We are in a situation we can do little about.

  5. I agree with all you say.

But to condone, or at least say nothing about how we have been cheated, and had millions stolen from us, is that not acceptance ?

Obviously we see the world from a very different perspective ?

  6. Tamrabam – aye, we will have. I’m kind of agreeing with you but we all forget about the running cost of buying a player after the initial fee is spent. A bit like a car in that respect – it might cost you 10 grand but theres tax, insurance and fuel and repairs…..

the 10 K quickly turns in to 20 k over the span of ownership.

Anyhow, Celtic can afford to do business, I expect they will. I just hope we get the right men in. I would hope we’ve already identified those men and are actively pursuing them.

Myself and 3 other members of our CSC in Dublin did a bit of the Camino a couple of years ago. We flew Ryanair Dublin to Biarritz. I got a local cab company from that wee town to collect us from the airport to St Jean Pied De Port. Their name is Express Bouricot and Caroline was the name of our driver. Great Basque people and they also offer a service to take your bags on ahead of you on the walk so that they are in your acomodation when you arrive at the end of a days walk. Makes the walk so much simpler for a small charge. We walked to Pamplona over 3 days and had a night out there. Then we travelled down to Bilbao by bus and stayed for a couple of nights and also got to see Bilbao play Barca in the Coppa Del Rey. It was a great trip and we met a lot of great people. I would love to some day do the full Camino as just that one part of it whetted my appetite for more. Enjoy yourself and don’t worry you will complete. I’ve also been to Santiago De Compostella with my wife and it is a wonderful City. I’d wager you’ll be walking on air when you enter that town in a few weeks time!

    Good luck!

I agree these are all great places. I have been to Santiago several times, and have obviously put my fingers into the holes in the pillar made by the millions of proper pilgrims that have been there in more than a millennium. I always felt a wee bit like a striker that dives for a penalty to win his team a match in which it has been outplayed, though, if you know what I mean.

This time, it will be the real thing.

  24. thehoopedduke on

Good luck to Wilson but I never really thought he was any better than average. CB and CF/ striker are very hard positions to fill… I’m struggling to pick a really good CB for us in the last 6-7 years

  25. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I think our spin on transfer fees is doing us and the likes of Balde no good. Spin is far more important than player development. Mind you with such an arithmetically incompetent support that gleefully suffers amnesia. It would be inappropriate not to take advantage of that awesome stupidity…unless of course your looking after your own investment. Thats when to issue the fiscal Rangers are still the yardstick approach like MON done.

But since the 6.2 game though we have been diddled left right and centre ..was that really 13 years ago ?

    Geordie Munro

So that would be 5 competitive games in total, and he has been described as a ‘work in progress’ by none other than Neil Lennon. He was signed relatively earlier in the window, has not been injured and got game time on the German tour, yet competitvely Lenny is reluctant to use him.

Hence my point that it is easy to see how some fans feel he is not THE suitable or direct replacement for Hooper.

    Disagree?

  27. I dont agree with the “we need new quality players” in to progress in Europe.

How often does a new player , no matter how good, immediately make a positive start in our team ?

Lubo yes, Mjallby yes, PVH yes, Sutton yes. but more often its a slow start , a few games to make an impact.

I think its as high a risk to to get someone in, on the expectation thats what will take us through. I prefer we go with what we have and battle through.

On the other hand though, I wouldnt have let any player leave on a transfer fee until we had completed the 3 rounds, then they could be sold.

    Just my opinion like.

I have been told we can only spend what we earn

for the past 10 years that wasn’t too much in terms of profit

this year we have a earned a few quid from last seasons euro run and a few transfers since then

my suggestion is to stick to that theory and spend what we have earned

im not sure how that takes us to liquidation?

A good description. I kinda had the same feeling last year when I was in Santiago. Celtic, Governance and Fair Play

Celtic are transparent in corporate governance, providing full disclosure of financial and regulatory matters to all stakeholders on time and according to the statutory calendar.

    A model of transparency.

Matters which cannot be disclosed because they are held under terms of confidentiality, are not disclosed.

    Good practice.

Matters which are sensitive, where public comment would be contrary to the interests of stakeholders, are discussed privately. Shareholders particularly, irrespective of shareholding value, are invited to attend face to face meetings with senior management when such appropriate matters arise.

    Open and accessible management.

Celtic play fair. (That’s a full stop there by the way)

Celtic are influential, but do not seek influence for its own sake. Our influence undoubtedly stems from our behaviour and practices in that we are a role model of a self-respecting, sustainable football club. People respect that. Increasingly.

Some folk in our support would prefer we used our influence more actively in areas where the actions of others fall below our own standards. We prefer more often than not to let football collectively deal with its own miscreants, something Scottish football collectively finds difficult to accomplish.

Celtic are not the policeman of Scottish Football. Neither ought we be.

We get on with our own thing in our own way, respect the rules, and expect others to do the same. In that regard, perhaps we are a little naïve. Bless.

  31. He admitted: “Out of everything, I have probably missed the fans the most. I love playing at The City Ground. “I know people talk about Barcelona, this game and that game, but I just love matchdays at The City Ground.”

Aye bye Kelvin, we’ll miss ye… not..
