Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Obviously I have no idea who we are looking at, but I will wager that we won’t get anyone of any decent quality on what we pay unless the Likes of DD or D o’B weigh in to subsidise their wages.

The club have mentioned nobody, PL spoke about RK when it was all over the news, all the speculation is coming from the media and the support, and our level; seems to be the likes of those banded about, who are out of work and have failed in their last jobs.

There are decent coaches in foreign that would consider Celtic as a major step up, who would work for what we are offering, the chance of euro football, the chance to manage a club with world wide reputation, they would work their bollix of for the chance, and would bring new fresh ideas into play.

Yet we are all bickering over the likes of Coyle and the like.

Go foreign Celtic, you know it makes sense.

  3. Paul Lambert for Celtic, we did put him through his coaching course in Gemany.

Always thought he’d return, nothing to back it up as I’m speculating on it happening at some point in the future, it’s good Craic this innit!

Comedy gold albeit sad comedy gold brought to you from Sevco Media forum:

The Rangers support are arrogant, as well we should be. I can’t wait until we are back at the top, lording it over everyone – letting them know that they are inferior.

    ——————————————————————————-

Yeah, that worked out really well with the old club!

I thought a Norwich was about the right destination for him or more likely one of the overachieving championship clubs like a Burnley or previously a Hull but even they have opted for stable EPL bottom half of the table experience. It will be increasingly difficult and I genuinely hope he succeeds but it’s tough as you say, especially with the odds.

My brother in law is a Birmingham fan and Clark there is on a shoofly peg after a shocking season last year, especially at home. They are about to change owners, get a cash injection and I guess bounce back. He’d be perfect for that with the right structure round him.

I think the level of spin coming out of CP at the moment is nauseating to say the least.

NL chucks it and hours later it is all by mutual consent and he is going to help pick his successor.

RK decides to say no and it is spun that he does not want to be considered.

What is it with those in charge of the club — can they not deal with failure getting into the public domain?

And then you put the icing on the cake with a lot of reverse engineering.

I can only speculate on what you would have written if RK had said yes.

  14. I know its the silly season but the level of conjecture (presented as informed opinion) on this site is reaching preposterous proportions.

Neil said this / Peter said that / Johan forced out / DD & PL happy to see NL leave / WGS endorsed this / MON didn’t endorse that….etc…etc.

  15. This is my take on the last few weeks. I have no inside information and my view is as valid as some of the tripe (copyright Awe_Naw) posted.

NFL had a good think about his and his family’s future. His eldest child starts secondary school later this year. He decides to leave Glasgow. No surprise given what he’s been through.

Celtic are now looking for a successor. They receive an application from RK and do him the courtesy of speaking to him. Celtic acknowledge he is a candidate following a leak from an Irish source. RK tells the media he no longer wishes to be a candidate. Celtic say there are a further 4 to 9 candidates for the job.

Celtic will appoint a good coach to the position in line with their much heralded strategy of buying players with potential, improving them and selling them on at a profit.

I expect to see a European coach who has not been mentioned.

All the talk of Coyle, Houston etc by the board bashers is pure speculation. BTW, Awe_Naw, Paul Lambert had left by the time RK came to CP. Lazy posting mate. But, hey ho, it suits your negative agenda.

    Let the people sing.

Can anyone tell me, if Celtic were to buy Aston Villa from their American owner, could we transfer them lock stock and barrel to Scotland and rename them CELTIC and allow us entry into the EPL? Would that only be possible if we were part of the UK?

  22. Which of these 2 scenarios do you think are more likely

1 Neil was on a one year rolling contract. That would require Celtic to pay him a years salary if they fired him. Unless of course Celtic gave Neil a years notice last year, with a view to revisiting the subject around seasons end.

2 Neil walked away without what he was entitled to contractually.

Neil was a success for the club, but not such a resounding success that the club wouldn’t have been fully entitled to review last season and wonder if they couldn’t have done better
