Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

  5. Ghuys,

I guess one of the exam questions for any prospective new manager is how would you improve the team, given broadly the same budgetary constraints.

My preference would be a better balance in midfield , with players who require one or two touches on the ball , supported by a more movement up front , allowing our midfield to pick out a pass.

The failed Mowbray experiment (i.e. everyone up and jog back when you lose the ball) should sent warnings out about Managers who pander to the support and ‘want to play the Celtic way – whatever that means’. I feel Jackie definitely falls in this category and Malky could but never saw enough of Cardiff , Watford to form a judgement.

Assuming that our remuneration package will not measure up to Lambo, Moyes and Clark’s expectations then we are struggling for a serious UK candidate.

We have breathing space (this year) for possibly a European coach to re-shape the playing style, fitness regimes ,to ensure that we have a pacier , one touch game …………… sounds like a ‘mini’ – Martinez, Rodgers, Laudrup ………… balancing this ideal up, we have the peculiar refereeing standards (you are allowed to thump the opposition , if they earn large multiples more then you in take home pay) and horrible pitches for 4 months of the year ………. which can often negate ‘tip tap football’.

Unless there is a top-class , upcoming European coach, with excellent references then for me , which is doubtful, reality suggests Malky in prime position.

  6. Paul has totally lost me on that header ” excellent development structure. “. Yup lost me and thousands there Where ?

Ps I was at Easter rd also when pierce blootered it towards fife

A lot of fans beside me were leaving there seats in the stand as he walked up to take it

  7. Not to bothered by the time it’s taking to get somebody in.

Players are not back to the 24th so no real rush imo.

All I know is that Lenny leaving and the possible cadidates for the job has been a godsend for the SMSM.

  12. Paul67 et al

Well some, well Don King for one, might say that our ‘strategy’ just left town. Or in a word, has just failed. I am of the view that with BT more or less taking over the Champions League next year, and with a corresponding increase in CL money, even for the SPFL, this is a season ahead when we need to maintain our European profile. That meant supporting our then manager, instead of humiliating him over Samaras. Peter Lawwell lost Neil Lennon followed by Dermot |Desmond entering the fray and trying and failing to get Roy Keane.

To lose one Irish manager is unfortunate, to lose two Irish managers is, well, careless.

If the board continue to overlook Bernie Clifton and his ostrich as the obvious DOF and coach duo they could do worse than Glenn Hoddle. He is looking to get back into management and is a brilliant coach. This despite his “peculiar” views on reincarnation.

    I know, I know………….

  16. Hard for punters of my generation to swallow.

It is now evident that Celtic are simply the biggest fish in a fast draining small pool.

  17. Celtic Mac

Remind me how many league games Samaras started last year?

Also our CL opponents cottoned on to the obvious that we were a one trick pony using Georgios as an out ball.

Baffled that a manager would resign over not offering georgios a new contract … Still wait for the best seller and we will find out , my theory is simpler ( less conspiratorial) . Neil didn’t fancy another 2 years and after the CL this year , where we were more expansive ( Barca apart) considered he had taken the team as far as he talent would allow.

  18. Now Lenny went into job with no experience

So How about someone like Tom Boyd (docs his stalker right enough)

who has never had anything negative to say about us, don’t know if he has any coaching badges

And get a couple of highly rated coaches with him, there is a few available

    Just a thought

    Hail Hail

  19. ..the smert money’s still on

Sam Malone – DoF (good for the Irish American market)

with Ernie Pantuso as Coach ( wise head, safe pair of hands)

  20. Paul.

You say that Keane would have an unacceptable risk for Celtic.

Being close to PL why don’t you ask him why an unacceptable risk was even contemplated?

  21. quonno

    What generation is that ?

Were you not about in the nineties when we weren’t even the biggest fish in the small pool ?

  22. Wee John McKay was given a tie…

But I fear it will never be seen….

‘Cos believe me…it’s true….his ties are all blue…

And this wan wiz white and green…..

    As for the new person ( well…it might be a wumman…..ma wife’s applied)….

As long as they know how to get defenders to defend….that’ll do for me……

We might get away with the Franz Beckenbauer stuff in Scotland…..we won’t in Europe.

    Correction…we didn’t…in Europe.

  23. Not too surprised when NFL left, even less surprised when RK opted out. I expect to see a dak horse on the rails taking up the race and we wil be very surprised. My guess is a European in his early forties, with a decent playing pedigree and modest CV, that appears to be our model lately.

  24. vinniethedog on

So far I could pick holes in all the relevant candidate’s CVs ……….

My main worry is this ……from a unbelievable position of strength ………a good young manager ..( who gets it)…..3 leagues in a row…..decent squad…….two or three additions ……..say…..Snodgrass……..and a couple more…..not breaking the bank stuff……sell the duds…….and complete domination for at least 5 or 6 years……..

We could easily go back at a helluva rate of knots………..it happens so easily in this game………careful Celtic careful………

  26. Neil Lennon’s reasons for leaving were personal and not relating to anything to do with Celtic. Can’t understand why we continually kick the club for no reason. There’s plenty to find fault with but not that.

Still think there are moves afoot – and there is something very curious about Aston Villa.

You mentioned the 24th June. So, too, did Neil when asked the timescale he was working to for appointing Johan’s replacement.

I heard this from the man himself at a Q&A session in the Jock Stein lounge days before he quit.

I know he would not tell us everything that’s going on but I’d still love to know why he decided to go so suddenly.
