Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Apart from anything else, if Neil planned to have Sammi for next season’sEuro strategy, then he obviously didn’t see what every European club saw last season.

For a few reasons, Neil Lennon’s time at Celtic Park had come and gone and he deservedly went at his own time and in the manner of his choosing.

Thanks for the good times and good luck for your future.

I had a conversation with Neil Lennon 2 months ago, when he spoke about how he was looking forward to getting Biton back for the next season, how he was still looking for a striker for next season, how he wanted to make sure we were ready for ‘them’ coming back.

Just a general chat about all things Celtic which did NOTHING to suggest he would not be with us this coming season and beyond.

Awe Naw, as far as I am aware Lambert and Keane never played together.

Keane is apparently pals with Lambert but I can’t see how that would come about. I think it would be more likely that Lambert would leave under the circumstances and 2 plus 2 make 4.

What possible tie in would Celtic have with Villa other than double D buying them and calling them Aston Celtic.

Great post sir. I do not mean this in an antagonistic way but I suspect Neil’s management career has reached its zenith.

There will be more gigs, and if he does the ‘championship into EPL trip’ he’ll probably be sacked mid-season after it.

I guess family life will be more pleasant and I guess you can’t putt a price on that.

Got to disagree with the take on Samaras in Europe. Neil did not play to Samaras strengths and instead went with an open attacking option. Sammy looked like a fish out of water with no space to run into and he subsequently gave the ball away.

Previous successful games saw Sammy deployed in a position to get the ball after we won it on our 18 yard line.

Samaras has gotten better in the boo bhoy bowels of CP from the minute he didn’t get past initial talks in January.

Dead simple in PL terms, his contribution doesn’t equate to the continued wage required to keep him.

Garbage it may be. I asked Ryecatcher at the weekend if he had heard anything about Aston Villa. Saturday night I think.

I also mentioned that some older guys had been away on a jolly and had the opportunity to gossip about our club. I was told to keep a close eye on Aston Villa.

They were not part of the narrative at that stage – but I may be wrong.

I was also told that Steve Clarke was highly regarded and that Lenny would be leaving. Night of Aberdeen game and I posted that with a heavy heart. (He is my Winning Captain)

I was very surprised when it looked like RK was going to get the job and I don’t think Paul bought into that happening anyway. Today’s leader – I can tell you – was rushed. Paul had two minutes in between meetings. He has lots to say but certainly had no time to say anything today.

I am the first to admit I talk mostly garbage on here but it is curious that you considered the Villa link in an entirely different way to me. Something is afoot – or could be. it could be good or it could be bad for us, depending on your point of view.

Another thing. I have some Villa friends and they have been asking me about Celtic.

According to STV … Kenny miller to sign for rangers tomorrow for a third time

The lies continue to be peddled by the SMSM

    ——

Maybe someone could ask Kenny if the club he signed for had the same club registration number?

    Big Wavy,

You will very probably be right about NL and his career peaking.

For Neil’s sake, I hope I am wrong, but getting through the first 12 / 15 months in England is hard.

In EPL, based upon previous seasons, he will have a 35/40 % chance of being sacked, and, even if he takes over from a sacked manager in October / November, there are still clubs going through 2/3 managers in a season.

Of the two jobs on the go in EPL at present, I don’t see Southampton adequately replacing the guys they sell, so WBA looks a better bet.

Or, he could look at Leeds – big club, big history, underachieve, but a challenging board.

It is not so much Neil leaving, it is the manner of his leaving that concerned me. And the subsequent statement from Celtic, which suggested to me that Jack Irvine was unavailable. Good luck to Neil, he gave a lot to and for Celtic, the record books will show that.

I would take at face value what Neil said 4 or 5 weeks ago, still not so sure I have ever read a definitive statement from Neil that he would draw a line in the sand if Sammy was not offered a new contract … Perhaps there is an MSM quote somewhere ….

Neil’s if he stayed for next season, assuming Them get promoted / still exist then he would of necessity have required to stay for another year. None of us know but I would guess that there is more likely to be personal / family considerations with kids getting older than be overly concerned about Sammy.

Neil Lennon has worked with Peter Lawell for years and hey when Neil chooses a new direction then there must be someone to blame , as after all how could anyone leave the Celtic managers job , as fans that is a near impossible situation to get your head round
