Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Yip, but it’s actually a real possibility. The standard under OBAFTC Act is a fine and a banning order. If a banning order is deemed inappropriate for a professional footballer, and a £300 fine barely scratches the surface of a £10K per week earner, beyond community payback there aren’t too many alternatives to a wee stretch in the gaol.

Following which of course, doubtless Mr Lunny will have something to say.

Jungle Jim, I take confidence from the newcos attempts to beat Raith and Falkirk over the last couple of seasons:)

Livibhoy yep of the Edinburgh clubs at least Hearts appear to have a couple of youngsters with a bit of quality AND fight. Hibs players lack both and unless they have freed up some cash to spend its hard to see them challenging, which is incredible.

I actually remember thinking at the time that LG could be jailed for this but, as time has passed, I had forgotten about the possible consequences. I`ll have to keep my eye on this one,

The biggest difference between Clarke’s first and second seasons at West Brom was Romelu Lukaku.

I’d like to see us try to attract some EPL “squad” players on loan. Some good quality there. The top sides are stock-piling players for fear of losing them to rivals. They’d rather sign the player even if there isn’t an immediate place for them in the team. Someone like Clarke would surely be able to get us one or two of these guys. Get some CL experience before going back to their parent club.

  8. If we all spent the same time angst ridden and concerned about the state of the economy and tge fitness of the politcians and bosses who screwed us all we might be in a better place….

Worst situation for Celtic is failure to qualify for europe. This will cause angst a plenty. While you are all looking at that someone will be robbing you of your hralth care and your kids of their planet.

    Never mind.

Celtic have just mailed me asking if i want an overseas season ticket.

Does anyone else here have one?

I thought it was a good idea to buy one, i travel to and from London Gatwick from Istanbul for work, and the day i fly is a Wednesday. I thought i could arrive at Gatwick from work get a flight to Glasgow for Wed night games and then fly home from Edinburgh in the morning….

The thing is that Celtic need the paperwork for my chosen game no later than 4 weeks before the chosen game.

Seems a bit of a hard neck seeing as game dates can be changed at the drop of a hat.

  16. Comrade Paul can put whatever spin he wants on the shambles of the last few weeks. Ultimately;

We lost our manager weeks after winning our third championship, no warning, no preparation, we can assume it was a reluctant decision from Lenny.

We then proceeded to identify Keane as our first target and we got knocked back.

For a Club that loves to backslap itself at every AGM for being well run, at the minute we’re making Sevco look professional.

Those CL qualifiers won’t be postponed to allow us to get our sh!t together…

  17. yorkbhoy

All I know is that Lenny leaving and the possible cadidates for the job has been a godsend for the SMSM.

They can churn out any old rbbish as long as it fills column inches (or would that be column yards?).

    They know nothing.

In addition they must be mightily relieved that it takes the spotlight off Sevco for a while.

It’s not so easy getting the ol’ column inches out when you are tip-toeing round a mine field.

  18. mullet and co 2 on

Mind you Celtic have removed player recruitment fom the job description so that’s about £100k removed for that task alone.

  19. Stop bothering about the bookies. This is a market they can drive. It is not a big market.

They will already have picked up money on RK and Henrik.

I reckon if I put a few grand on Moyes he would move to favourite.

DD is a gambling man follow his money.

The papers have more than 2 options. Many more. But the

one I can guarantee they will pick is the one that they think will make them the most sales/money and remain within the law where possible. This usually involves printing any old pish they fancy in the hope that gullible people will purchase their product in the belief that they are receiving fresh and accurate information. Sometimes they will print the truth – but only if it will make them money. IMHO.

    What about Eddie the Eagle?

Top class competitor for years, albeit in skiing, could easily make the transition to football management.

    Wouldn’t cost the earth either.

  23. There are countless quality managers out there, sadly we are grubbing about looking for someone who will work for a relative pittance.

Maybes DD could weigh in with subsidising wages for a couple of seasons, maybes not then, just a thought.
