Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Just had a guy on the phone claiming to represent a major client who is attempting to buy / aquire a 51% share in Celtic FC .

He offered me between £7 – £15 per share and claimed that they had already aquired 41% of the required shares , obviously it’s some kind of scam .

Just a warning to other shareholders incase they receive one of these calls.

the only thing that is curious about Villa is that Randy Lerner (still owner) and the good relationship he still has with MON and how after MON blew the Celtic PLC penchant for convert action out of the water and made them look stupid. Rightly so as he was doing them the favour.

Any misplaced hints that somehow Celtic are going to get involved with Aston Villa is pie in the Sky

Almost as much pie in the Sky as PAul67s lead articles. SO I can undertsand the hope that it will somehow influence the targeted audience but garbage all the same

An article worthy of Pravda at its finest!

No doubt the leaking of the “talks” with SC was well timed as it came a couple of hours before RK let it be known that he wasn’t coming

I don’t think many will agree that RK would not be our manager today if he had wanted it!

I believed that Keane was our best shout for the following reasons

    1. He would only take the job if promised a realistic amount of money to spend

    2. He would have been a good leader of our club

    3. He would have instilled in our players the correct attitude towards playing for CFC on and off the park

Others will disagree -that is their right

However being realistic – DD will not back anyone else with more money

Most reputable coaches will take a look and politely decline after more “talks”

I expect SC to last a few days before he declines citing a reason such as his family

We will then work our way steadily ever downwards until we get OC or if even he knocks us back again -then Peter Houston -after all we’re already paying him a wage!

Hope to be proved wrong but I have no great expectation

MON said welcome to the slow lane.

MON did not need to tell the world about the RK approach but he choose to do so. RK ends up at Villa yet another coincidence in the Celtic scheme of things.

WGS gave no endorsement of Roy Keane the job yes. RK No

Neil Lennon was nothing but enthusiastic for the CL nights and was very much looking forward to them a week or so before Johans contract was not renewed,

Unless Neil Lennon was being economical with the truth, with us, 4-5 weeks ago, he was looking to firm up (if I can use that phrase on here) the team and discuss, with Celtic, bringing in 2-3 players in prep for the CL qualifiers, (you know those games that you need to do well in to qualify for the CL), and look ahead. Samaras was part of his thinking, but it wasn’t part of Peter Lawwell’s thinking. Neil needed, and we need still, to keep the first team squad, add too it, and bring through maybe 2-3 players into the 25, from the younger teams. I have said on here before that Neil Lennon did not take the team as far as he could, but he realised he was restricted to taking it as far as Peter Lawwell could. Reread the Celtic “statement” on his leaving, and let me know how the ‘strategy’ is working out.

Robert, do you really want us to only ponder life’s injustices instead of discussing Celtic sometimes? Thinking, for example, about how Socialists are wrecking France, instead of rejoicing when Celtic score a goal, would drive us all to the asylum eventually. We need escapism. I think we are all aware that Celtic’s next manager doesn’t have the same level of importance as solving some of the world’s problems. It is however fun to debate, agree, speculate etc about Celtic’s next man.

My understanding is that NL brought up his resignation during a meeting with DD and PL, and to his surprise was met with a response along the lines of ‘ if that’s how you feel , you are best to do so’.

IMHO , I don’t believe NL went into the meet 100% sure he was going to resign, and I don’t think he got the response he anticipated.

Equally methinks that DD and PL were not looking to replace NL, but they had considered this may happen.

Reality is, a good, and potentially great manager has left Celtic, and long -term, I think NL will regret the decision more than we do.
