Kicked, robbed but also second best

318

Yes, I know, you could have put money on Bobby Madden turning in a performance like that, no doubt someone did.  Still, Celtic teams for generations have had to overcome odds determined by the men in black, even without the unpunished brutality on show, Celtic were second best.

Newco applied a soft press, allowing our central defenders time on the ball but tightly competing for space in the middle of the park.  McGregor, Hatate and Rogic were swamped in the middle of the park, and when the ball reached either Taylor or Juranovic, they were seldom presented with even one good forward option.

As a consequence, Celtic repeatedly lost possession inside their own half, inviting wave after wave of attack.  Change was necessary and when it arrived 10 minutes after halftime.  Kyogo and Matt O’Riley replaced Liel Abada and Tom Rogic, Celtic enjoyed their best spell of the match for the next 20 minutes.

O’Riley in particular caused Newco problems and within 10 minutes Greg Taylor gave Celtic the lead.  Cameron Carter-Vickers soon has a great chance to double the advantage but hit the crossbar with a shot in front of goal.

Newco responded on 75 minutes by replacing Aribo and Jack with Davis and Arfield.  The latter levelled the score three minutes later and Newco were never again under sustained pressure.  The winning goal in extra time was narrowly offside.

Those of us in the stadium were unaware of this, so left the ground with a sense that Celtic failed to match their opponents tactically, while bizarrely lacking energy against a team who had played extra time three days earlier.

Two weeks ago Celtic were packed the midfield tighter at Ibrox and were able to find options when passing out of defence.  When we took the game to Newco the lack of precision and coordinated movement neutered what had previously worked well.

Credit where due to van Bronkhurst.  He outmanoeuvred a good coach yesterday.  Nothing was done to change an ineffective midfield until 55 minutes and there was no response after Newco took control after their double substitution.

Celtic were kicked off the park, literally on one occasion.  It was not until Anthony Ralston came on that we saw a robust response.  The game is not always about the pretty stuff, some of the greatest Celtic teams had granite hard geniuses.

The selection of the Orange Order candidate for the Labour Party is offensive and indicates the lack of scrutiny that political parties exercise over candidates. It wasn’t just the youthful Mhairi Black who demonstrated these tendencies on the YES side of the debate nor was it confined to historical figures like Donaldson, Wolfe and Wilson.

Anti -Irish racism is present in all parties and seems to be no barrier to a candidature as this shows:-

  4. I think we are hitting out at collateral targets in our annoyance at our loss yesterday. The Green Brigade caused no problem to the team or its focus. This was a day when Irish flags was the given theme. On another day the GB may well promote the Saltire and I’ll do the same as I did yesterday which was to not wave any flag or get annoyed by the flags others chose to wave. There really is no dispute to be had there- manufactured annoyance only.

As for the game- it was piss poor. A world record breaking amount of throw ins, fouls, injury breaks and time wasting. Not a spectacle that will live long in any memory. They hit the post, we hit the bar. Roofe narrowly missed and they had a goal mouth stramash. We had a Calmac shot go narrowly wide, Kyogo missed a late header and Hatate lacked composure when Daizen set him up.

On these fine margins, plus Boaby’s less than subtle game management, are games won and lost. I can clearly state that Celtic did not deserve the win yesterday; I cannot say that the Ibrox club deserved it either but win they did. My eyes are dry and I move on to the next match.

Our team and manager have performed very well this year. Even though I thought the league was eminently winnable and the Ibrox performance last year was an anomalous one leaving their “superiority” as a son target to aim at, I am still surprised and pleased at the way we have done this, with attractive football and tremendous effort.

We are still grumpy and hurting but let’s not take it out on each other here this week. That is fruitless. Good Tims are fighting with other good Tims. Yes- there may be trolls and imposters on here but we are including some who have every right to feel insulted by any aspersion being cast on their commitment to our club.

Please – take a backward step. This blog has just started to show some signs of improvement. Don’t let the real trolls win by continuing their work.

It’s endemic throughout most of Scotland. It’s a Scottish thing, not a party political thing.

I am not a member of any political party indeed I believe the time for political parties is gone

JHB and his ilk regularly (every day) on this blog descend to gutter-level politics accusing those on the side of Independence of being anti-catholic, asserting “our people” will be targetted in an independent Scotland, my post was mere as one of balance

Not a shred of evidence is presented to support this nonsense it is a baseless lowest common denominator shite.

My own anecdotal evidence over the last 10 years working in large companies based in Lanarkshire is the Labour party does indeed have a serious issue with those who see the Labour party as a vehicle to support the union and the Crown

It is to your discredit as a Labour party member you come on this site to defend such crass political nonsense, no wonder Labour has shed so many members and voters, as I once was

Maybe your ire should be directed at JHB and his ilk

  9. “It is to your discredit as a Labour party member you come on this site to defend such crass political nonsense,”

Except B I didn’t defend it; I described it as both offensive and lacking proper scrutiny.

The party that you loan your vote to will also offer you a Union and a Crown. It is the same crown that both of us would like to see replaced by a Republican citizenship but neither of our votes gives us any moral authority over the other on that issue. You state that you get independence and then argue over dropping the crown. Therefore Independence is not a provider of citizenship; it is , in fact, an irrelevance that can continue with or without a crown- Windsorite or Jacobite.

And as for Union, both SNP and Labour (and even Tories) propose a Union. It is a union and a dilution, by sharing, of your own autonomy, exceptionalness, and desire to be governed only by Scotsfolk, whether you share union with England, Wales and the Occupied 6 or whether you share it with Germany, Lithuania and Spain and many others.

Finally — Are you the brains behind Toaty Trumper’s political diarrhoea?

  11. When we beat the Ibrox mob previously, we operated with the same weaknesses and strengths that we have now. We were just as lightweight and had the same number of non-tacklers in the squad.

What we did differently was move the ball around faster so that they never got near enough to us in time to tackle. We also created more chances so we could afford to miss a few.

Yesterday, we did not get near their goal often enough. GVB showed no different tactics but we exercised our game plan less well than we had done previously.

I am putting it down to a lapse in form largely aided and abetted by Boaby’s refusal to notice and punish repeat offenders in blue shirts.

Ross County is our next important game. We need to counter their speedy wing men but they have a much less reliable defence than Sevco, so I hope we attack and we play only match fit players. If Kyogo is still as unfit as he was on Sunday, I would give him only a late run out. We should have enough to win without him and GG, if needed

  15. MIB — how to respond?

I think we have to use our friends in the media — not many I know — to ask questions about BM’s performance yesterday and take efforts toward his demotion as a MIB.

His performance was shocking — evidence abounds to his snidery interpretation of the rules to the benefit of TFOD2.1.

He cannot be allowed to ref in the SPL again this season.

You have not been given the gift of foresight T, you really need to stop trying to predict the future of an Independent Scotland, it really is nonsense

After Independence is achieved it will be the democratic wishes of the Scottish people expressed through the ballot box that decides such issues as membership of the EU or whether we retain a monarch as head of state, as a Republican, I will vote and campaign for Scotland to be a democratic republic, I do not believe the UK will ever be a republic sadly the Labour Party is interwoven into the fabric of the establishment in London they love the ermine of the HOL, enjoy the prestige that knights of the realm give all the baubles and wealth have attracted far too many who started out as socialists only to end up pledging their allegiance to the crown, however, an independent Scotland certainly could be a republic as unlike you T I have more faith in those who live in Scotland for that to be a realistic objective

Quick question — what would you replace political parties with?

Interested to find out the thoughts of the young team.

  23. Had wee look at County’s form. They’re unbeaten at Dingwall since they last played us, 8 league games in total including visits from the huns and the diets.

We’ve a big game on Sunday, should we win it, we will considerably narrow the huns window of opportunity to over take us. They’ll see Sunday as an opportunity. The highlands at this stage of the season hasn’t been kind to us historically.

I’ve forgotten about yesterday already now, nerves about Sunday are kicking it already.
