Kicked, robbed but also second best

318

Yes, I know, you could have put money on Bobby Madden turning in a performance like that, no doubt someone did.  Still, Celtic teams for generations have had to overcome odds determined by the men in black, even without the unpunished brutality on show, Celtic were second best.

Newco applied a soft press, allowing our central defenders time on the ball but tightly competing for space in the middle of the park.  McGregor, Hatate and Rogic were swamped in the middle of the park, and when the ball reached either Taylor or Juranovic, they were seldom presented with even one good forward option.

As a consequence, Celtic repeatedly lost possession inside their own half, inviting wave after wave of attack.  Change was necessary and when it arrived 10 minutes after halftime.  Kyogo and Matt O’Riley replaced Liel Abada and Tom Rogic, Celtic enjoyed their best spell of the match for the next 20 minutes.

O’Riley in particular caused Newco problems and within 10 minutes Greg Taylor gave Celtic the lead.  Cameron Carter-Vickers soon has a great chance to double the advantage but hit the crossbar with a shot in front of goal.

Newco responded on 75 minutes by replacing Aribo and Jack with Davis and Arfield.  The latter levelled the score three minutes later and Newco were never again under sustained pressure.  The winning goal in extra time was narrowly offside.

Those of us in the stadium were unaware of this, so left the ground with a sense that Celtic failed to match their opponents tactically, while bizarrely lacking energy against a team who had played extra time three days earlier.

Two weeks ago Celtic were packed the midfield tighter at Ibrox and were able to find options when passing out of defence.  When we took the game to Newco the lack of precision and coordinated movement neutered what had previously worked well.

Credit where due to van Bronkhurst.  He outmanoeuvred a good coach yesterday.  Nothing was done to change an ineffective midfield until 55 minutes and there was no response after Newco took control after their double substitution.

Celtic were kicked off the park, literally on one occasion.  It was not until Anthony Ralston came on that we saw a robust response.  The game is not always about the pretty stuff, some of the greatest Celtic teams had granite hard geniuses.

  2. Paul, you say GVB outmanouvered a good coach.

But is Ange a good tactical coach . Because I’ve not seen an awful lot of evidence so far to prove that he is.

Even if your prediction turns out to be more accurate than mine (and all I predicted was that there would still be a crown on the first day of Scottish Independence- that is a safe bet) you would still be seeking to make a union of your Republican vote with other Monarchists (Scottish, Danish, Belgian, Luxembourgers, Dutch, Spanish and Sweden- maybe even GB (r) if Labour pursues re-entry).

Yes- I was under the weather on Saturday, tired early, but stopped before I pushed too hard. Rested the rest of the day and I will get back to the gym tomorrow or Wednesday to test myself out and see if I can get back next week.

  4. I posted before the game that if we play to the level we can we would win in ninety minutes.

Didn’t quite reach the level I hoped, for a whole host of reasons all covered on here already over the last day or so, that said we were leading 1-0 with just over ten minutes to go, could have been two up, and looked good for the victory. A game we could and should have won, though looked less and less likely by the second half of ET. And I’m not talking about the movie that was on ITV 2.

I actually don’t wish to comment any further on your post because I don’t want to cause offence, except to say that I find yours extremely offensive.

  10. Only joking Ernie – a wee J’HB unionist, but not in the North of Ireland meaning of Unionist, rather the Scottish Unionist meaning of Unionist accepting being sh@t upon for fear of being even more sh@t upon Unionist, tongue in cheek comment.

Why the focus on an snp leader whilst giving no credence to either the red or the blue in the union flag

  26. Punters on football blogs who call other oriole out are on a loser to start with they don’t realise a lot of Celtic minded people have actually met in real life …

I was lucky enough to meet the sadly departed Tory Macjay … in real life was a terrific person, was lucky enough to meet his Bhoy & girl … unfortunately o havre met Art of War and definitely treat JVR as a family friend …. CQN has brought me many friends from Lennybhoy to 16roads .., I think it’s a place to come when delighted with our team …. But the same place when we at garbage (yesterday) …. I still think this will end up a terrific season for us..,, but if it does not … who cares ….. apart from MM & co when we waken in the morning we will still be Tim’s … well most of us :-)

  27. And historical amnesia?

Jeez Louise, mad history. You must have seen rathlin Island on your cycle. Google the massacre there, part of the f kin Highland clearances I think.

There are even history teachers, never mind millions of ppl, who don’t know that Cromwell was hung drawn and quartered 3 years after his death.

  28. Succinct wee video from Huddle Breakdown’s Enda Coll:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VySzXh2X0sQ

It stocktakes Boaby’s botched decisions, but also fair enuff to say we were a tired no-show as a team unit. Enda should send to Mike Nicholson for his dossier.

As other say, they’re not a bad collective. Only 15m in transfers over x2 years has taken them pretty far in Europe (without any partizan ref support).

The last time us Celts had a European semi was visiting Lisbon for the 50th anniversary of the Lions win !

  29. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Seeing loads of complaints about the Plc lying down to the SFA regarding not challenging the refs.

This has been going on for years, the suggestion to “take a dossier2 has already been tried and failed under numerous managers.

There is only one way to properly challenge it, withdraw from the Scottish cup competition, do not apply next season. This will create public interest from outside Scotland and meeja cover. When questioned about it the Plc can simply respond that we do not trust Scottish referee’s to protect our players health and well being, provide video examples.

When the inevitable backlash from all sides come, making statements that they have to accept the same treament, its check mate, a simple statement highlighting that other clubs obviously feel the same going by their statements incorrectly directed at Celtic for being the first to act.

  30. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    An Tearmann,

For reference purposes can you provide me with links that support you accusation that George Galloway is a racist?

I’ve only seen him being accused and smeared, never charged which is what I’d expect if he was caught being racist.

Obviously you have such unquivocal evidence when you regularly state he is a racist, so I’m keen to understand on what you base this accusation.

  31. Good morning CQN

its check mate, a simple statement highlighting that other clubs obviously feel the same going by their statements incorrectly directed at Celtic for being the first to act.

Can you name who these other clubs are and substantiate your assertion “other clubs feel the same” ?

I have missed all of that, have never seen any other club affiliated with the SFA make formal complaints with respect to biased refereeing performances, the SFA is made up of membership the clubs the SFA AGM passes every year which clearly is the opportunity for these clubs to get change in how refereeing is operated at the SFA, outwith Celtic I see no other member club willing to challenge the SFA, if you have evidence to the contrary let us see it

  32. Good morning all from a lovely sunny morning in the Garngad

Wish I never read back, politics, politics and politics.

I keep seeing a poster calling another a Toaty trumper is this a reference to potatoes/famine what or why else would someone use that reference.

Anyway we move forward to Sunday and another team that would get football banned.

If you think referees dont protect our players watch these last 5 games starting Sunday. Oh and Malky the soup taker McKay can GTF as well after his comments the last time we played them. Just another ex celt happy to stick the boot in.

Hello again all you young rebels.

From a dark miserable looking Melbourne, that’s just me, the

weathers not much better either. 😡

Well, it just never happened for us on Sunday, lots of factors caused

that fact, not least the effect an opponent hanging onto your neck

and a leg twisted round your groin area made it impossible to play

    any type of passing game.

As for the refereeing, even the Aussies here are laughing and shaking

their heads at the bias, which was unbelievable.

Anyway bhoys and ghirls, eyes on the prize, the league is the holy grail,

just wish we had a Davy Hay,Bobby Murdoch, or even a Victor Wanyama

for the next battle, nothing surer they will implement the same tactics.
