Kris, Nielson on opinions, careless cautions

731

Player who has been out since April in shock Uefa squad omission. The only surprise about Kris Commons and Uefa lists is that he was included for the earlier rounds, despite not pulling on a Celtic shirt since April through injury. He was there because there was space on the A list. He’s now been omitted because we signed Scott Sinclair and Brendan Rodgers needed to remove one name to keep his options open for a wildcard.

Kris’ chances of being fit enough to play are less than Patrick Roberts’ so his name came off the list.

I don’t habitually dig up managers at other clubs, but Robbie Nielson is testing the limits of incredulity. When asked about Scott Brown calling Jamie Walker a cheat, he said “If you have got an opinion on anything you are better just keeping it to yourself.”

This is the guy who can’t shut his mouth about referees, including an incident last season when he thought action should have been taken against……. Scott Brown.

Robbie, if you can dish it out but you can’t take it, maybe you are better just keeping your stray opinions to yourself.

We collected four yellow cards at Tynecastle: Gordon, Brown, Dembele and Sinclair. None of them incurred incurred when the ball was in play. Craig Gordon’s was for not going to his line at the Hearts penalty, Moussa Dembele’s was for knocking the ball away, Scott Sinclair’s was for running into the crowd after scoring a debut goal (he’s knew, he should learn, but it’s a clear yellow card) and Scott Brown’s for dissent.

If we’re going to tot up cautions, we should at least do it during play when there is some advantage to be won. Four conceded carelessly off the ball is unusual and could cost us later in the season.

Scott Brown in particular should take note, that was his second caution of the season for dissent, the first coming in Astana. Scott’s a hugely important player to Celtic, previous absences from Europe due to off-the-ball indiscretions should be acting as an inhibitor at this stage of his career.

  1. I’ve had another idea. Why don’t we give players a BONUS for not getting booked?

Naw, there’s them refs wi too much power again, scrap that!

    Tet,

    I wouldn’t say it’s a rule reserved for us.

Occasionally some of our own escape it too. Griff was lucky twice last season not to be carded for it.

The hertz scorer was even booked at the weekend for not even going to the fans. If that was one of our own booked for taunting opposing fans we’d be up in arms.

  7. TET….

    Interesting observation.

I am not aware of any player running into the crowd in a league match not being booked. If there are any instances I’d reckon they would be exceptionally rare if any. Would be good to know though.

I do think however there is a discrepancy where there is a deep ‘running track’ and a distance to an advertising hoarding. There does seem to be an inconsistency in booking players who do, or do not vault that hoarding but do not actually go into the crowd.

Also….I am unclear if the rule applies out of league game situations. In the cups and play off matches for example.

  8. On the mib, we all know the same rules do not apply to CFC regarding ref rules,Tony Watt wearing a Celtic jersey on Sunday does to a Hearts player what he done to Scott Brown, he’s off! No hesitation, Salmons tackle on Toure, wearing a Celtic jersey! He’s gone as well, persistent fouling from Hearts the whole game on Celtic players according to the media was a great effort by Hearts and they done there job well? And deserved a draw?

Get used to these kind of reports, and honest mistakes, and it’s only the first game? Gonny be a longgggg season, hey! The Rangers are back? The four year level playing field stopped on Sunday.

  9. Is Griff sitting this one out partly because of all those bookings he picked up last season for his goal celebrations?

Hmm. Lustig not CB beside O’Connell then? Not ideal, but not the end of the world. Means we will almost certainly be going 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 instead of 3-5-2.

  11. I’ve got it. It was under my nose all the time. Scrap the yellow/red card system altogether.

It’s inherently unfair. If a player gets a yellow for a dangerous tackle or deliberately handball, it’s not the same as getting a yellow for going into the crowd after scoring, yet you can still get sent off for another yellow. Replace the whole system,.

Maybe certain infringements should have different points depending on the offence.

  18. When the packed crowd surges forward to greet the celebrating player, there is real danger – it is like a Hillsbourgh crush in micrcosom.

What do we do – wait until someone is trampled underfoot, or have their chest crushed on the front barrier?

If that did happen, and it just might, what on earth would the effect be on the player who caused it and on the squad.

Players are such sheep sometimes – they see something in another match and copy – e.g pulling shirts off – shirts over the head – rocking the baby – message on tee shirt underneath – sucking the thumb(whatever the hell that means) and of course running into the front of the crowd.

Nobody wants to be a killjoy – but for God’s sake, acting like eight and nine year olds is not on – in fact if you visit some kids games – it is the kids who copy them.

  19. Ladies and gentlemen, it has come to my attention that Helsingborgs IF have a player called Surprise. He scored on Friday night.

Surprise seems to be a nickname though as it appears his real name is Amethyst Bradley Ralani.

To be fair, if your name was Amethyst you would want to change your name, but to Surprise? Questionable judgement. Although, he could have been down at the post office in South Africa changing his name by deed poll, and when the clerk filling out the form asked, “What would you like to change it to?”, oor Amethyst said “Make it a surprise”.

It is up to the referee to work out if crushing / dangerous movement has occurred in the stands.

He can decide that what is and isn’t bookable — it is his discretion.

It is the discretionary element that is causing the issue.

That is what needs to be challenged if it becomes an issue.

Jumping into the crowd is usually a booking unless it is “Slapshot” and the Hansons are involved where it rapidly becomes civil insurrection and the National Guard are called out.
