KT, medical advice, player hierarchy, being ready to make a deal

598

Let’s get the badge kisser-thing sorted once and for all.  We have seen enough of them come and go not to be taken in.  You can set your watch by them.  I don’t believe in a hierarchy of Celtic players, or supporters, based on proclaimed affinity.  You are at Celtic because you want to be here, fan or player, and that’s enough.

Kieran Tierney has been a highly paid and respected professional for four years.  He mixed with others of the same ilk, as well as some who know they are out of their depth at Celtic.  The latter cherish the term of their Celtic contract, the former all wonder what level they will be able to reach in the game.  All of them.  To the best of my knowledge, no Celtic player has rejected circa £75k per week to remain here.

I don’t know what his medical advice has been, but if you read about chronic osteitis pubis, you get an insight into where an athlete’s head may be when he has a persistent injury that is not responding as hoped.

Osteitis pubis is a painful degenerative condition of the pubic symphysis, surrounding soft tissues and tendons…. It is currently considered as one of the most debilitating pain syndromes for athletes. Although the condition is considered self-limiting, it often requires stoppage of sporting activities for several months, representing a significant problem especially for elite athletes.”

Kieran got this move coming off the worst season of his professional career.  We will see if things improve, or go downhill, this season.  Consider what advice his agent would have given him right now.  None of this forms part of the public discourse, instead we got a clumsy social media comment about being out with his pals while Celtic are playing a crucial qualifier.

If we are serious about making progress as a football club, we need to take our player trading onto another level.  That means everyone has a price and we should be ready with replacement options whenever a value offer arrives.

If you think selling your top player for £25m is a bad day at the office, imagine your challengers selling a single player for that sum, and how transformational this kind of money is.  Trading is as much a part of success in the elite game as tactics and fitness.  There are no sacred cows, because eventually, the most sublime talents perish.

We should always be ready to make a deal.  See how it is done in Portugal.  Or look at Ajax, who were going nowhere, then discovered how to trade, sold €72m of talent in 2016-17, €73m in 2017-18 and reached the Champions League semi-final in 2018-19.

Multi-treble winning Brendan Rodgers is not a talent spotter.  He added Scott Sinclair (whom he had worked with) and Moussa Dembele (a John Park recommendation) to Ronny Deila’s squad.  If we are going to spend significant sums of money this summer, better to have Neil Lennon with his hand on the tiller.

It felt like a bad day when Brendan left, but now I am sure it was for the best.  There is no telling the damage Brendan and Lee would do with this kind of money.  Kieran was great, the best left back in decades, and yes, he should have stayed for 10, but I’m already feeling pretty neutral about him leaving.

At Celtic, we love our history more than any others do, but football is all about tomorrow.  Time to get busy writing the next chapter.

Surely it’s possible to rebuild the squad without spending outgoings that equal our incomings?

Just as players have to be skilful on the park, the business has to be canny operators off it, too.

Giving benefit of the doubt, mibby ‘the suits’ learned a lot in the BR years; that expensive Chelsea and Bundesliga loaners can be bang average, that dickin Hibs around can end real bad, that pissing Boyata and Moussa off can have consequences etc…etc Personally, I think the suits want 9 and 10 as much as any of us.

Right now, we’ve lost about 12 players (some good, some average) but we are replacing with credible signings (Hatem 1.5m; Jullien 7m; Boli 3m and, almost, Turnbull 3m (maybe deal done again in Jan). And Lenny wants more in. In property they say you make money when you buy, not when you sell. Mibby same in fitba

Risks should be reduced at the top-level sure. It still happens in the EPL all the time.

It’s not necessarily even failure from the medical team. Coaches & Directors may take a risk when they feel under pressure on deadline day.

    Juicy! por cierto

  24. If Leicester have left it till the last day of the season to make a move for CalMac then they would seem to me to be a bit all over the place in their transfer strategy.

That could well be true from what we’ve seen from Rodgers and Congerton. £20 million also seems a bit cheap given what they’ve taken in for Maguire.

All in all, I’m somewhat sceptical on the story. I don’t believe for a second that DD has vetoed any Celtic transfer business, it would very much go against the grain in terms of his hands off approach to the running of the club.

We had another blogger (sorry can’t remember name) who told us the problem KT has is exacerbated by not allowing the body enough time to rest and heal after injury.

That KT was diagnosed so early in his career, I can only surmise is correctable since arsenal are willing to invest so much, as discussed with timaloy29, the risk appears to be within acceptable limits which would indicate the condition can be managed and possibly reversed.

I was critical of Kieran on here just before the Scottish Cup Final, not least, his determination to declare himself fit for the final itself two days before he due to undergo surgery. I might have called it insanity, others, playing for the jersey. And therein lies part of the problem, It was his love for Celtic that forced him, inadvisedly, to play through the pain barrier for all of last season. He even changed the way he ran to try and limit the discomfort he experienced, an approach not totally dissimilar to running through the pain barrier, but one which exacerbates the condition. Groin, hernia, hip, pelvis, pubis, bone, muscle, cartilege and soft tissue, all can be a source of pain, I wonder though if ‘osteitis pubis’ is primarily a problem for the young and the growing. Kieran grew physically during this period, remember “growing pains”, there was something in your aul granny’s ken, though not sure that eating dandelions would cure it. Might do. I was not alone in thinking that Kieran had reached a point ten years earlier than Andy Murray. Kieran won’t stop being a Celtic supporter any more than Andy Robertson, or any of us on here. Oh and that Cup Final I mentioned, we know now that would have been Kieran’s last game for Celtic. I’ll forgive him for that now.

Exactly, my point is the medical indicated the signing KT was no more risky than signing any other player.

    ___

KT’s medical will have highlighted risks. The decision-makers at Arsenal will have made a decision based off them. They may have been willing to have signed him with an element of risk built-in.

For example, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was signed by Liverpool despite having a history of injury. This history would be well known to Liverpool, they would have had access to the best doctors but they still decided to go ahead with the signing knowing the risks.

A medical can advise a club of risks but it’s not the doctor’s decision to go ahead with the deal. It’s the clubs and sometimes clubs make the wrong decision. Easy to see how that happens on deadline day.

KT’s risk profile is unique to him. He’s gone from a guy who’s fit for nearly every game to somebody who was fit for about 50% of games.

I’m not a doctor so I don’t know why that is. Maybe it worried Celtic more than it did Arsenal.

    Time will tell.
