Lady luck, £5m decision, HMRC

203

Sion had their elimination coming, totally banged to rights.  Legia made a stupid mistake which came to light after two of the most impressive and important victories in their recent history.  Football can be a cruel game.  I’m genuinely gutted for them.

Notwithstanding that, after we read the rules and found precedents the outcome was not in doubt.  Unlike fielding an ineligible player, fielding a suspended player brings an automatic forfeit verdict.

For the record, it wasn’t Celtic who drew Uefa’s attention to the error, we played no part in Legia’s misfortune.

Having stayed long enough to see ‘the winning substitution’ I’m not confident of progressing beyond the play-off round with the squad as it is, but this decision guarantees us four home gates and the best part of £3.5m from Uefa from the next round and (at least) the Europa League.  That’s circa £5m extra into the budget this morning.

Ronny’s going to need every penny.  This could be a transformational moment.

Can we briefly speak about HMRC?  They will lose the next appeal, which, like earlier deliberations, takes place in Scotland, but they will win the final appeal, to the Supreme Court, in London – because it’s in London.

HMRC are right to appeal, aggressive tax avoidance schemes rob the poor.  I am confident justice will eventually out, but not in a Scottish court.

On another subject……  watch how the Uefa verdict is interpreted elsewhere in Glasgow.  For the first time in history, cognitive dissonance is close to taking physical form.  This one was dumb luck, nothing more.

    Indeed Paul67

If it was any other European playing team in Scotland the decision (to abide by the rules) would be welcomed.

For any Huns you know moaning about this situation……

Ask them if they would have been happy with us fielding Scott Brown during his Neymar ban.

Enjoy the vacant look on their faces.

  3. Philbhoy Tue mate, Everything going forward is a problem just now, I just hope the problem is the players. There is lots wrong just now, Attitude a big one as well.

Maybe worth remembering that Rangers 1872-2012 should never have been in the group stages of the 92-93 Champions League.

In the second qualifying round they were drawn against Stuttgart. Then it was discovered that Stuttgart had played a fourth foreigner against Leeds. The game was replayed and Leeds won.

The draw should have been re-run as Rangers and Leeds were both un-seeded. With Stuttgart dropping out, Dinamo Bucharest should have moved up to being one of the eight seeds and would have avoided playing Marseille.

Rangers benefited by playing an un-seeded team, against a British opponent (check their record v foreign teams around that time) and a team which was so poor that season they only finished three places above relegation.

I’m sure the SMSM will be highlighting this………

Fielding an ineligible player can result if forfeiture of a game? Fancy that. I wonder if the SPL knows that one. Or maybe some Polish judge will deem it ‘no sporting advantage’ and make it all go away.

Also, I believe it was a Polish football journalist who questioned the problem. A football journalist doing a bit of digging and asking some pertinent questions eh? That approach might catch on in Scotland some day.

Ludogorets made EL group stages last season having played 3 CL qualifying rounds

The qualified from EL group and were only eliminated in last 16 by Valencia.

    No thanks.

  7. I believe RD will prove to be a success, once he deposits his own scent, and removes all trace of NL’s in Paradise. It will take time to do so…

What will be fascinating is his approach to doing so, particularly his use of youngsters and the knowledge of JK.

This fortunate reversal might just speed things up….

C’mon Ronny, get some shape and some organization into this team. They are capable of so much more than that, it shouldn’t be as hard as it has proved to be until now.

  15. If i was looking for a crumb of comfort about the state of our team i would have to remind everybody that for 30mins in the first leg against warsaw AWAY we were the better team with better possesion and chances…YES i know it all changed ,but we have the ability to score away from home therefore we will have a chance against any of the proposed teams assuming we get organised in defence.

  16. For all the gamblers, bookies will pay out on celtic to qualify but not on any other bet, bets settled on 90 minutes play, similar to motor racing where bets are settled on podium places irrespective of any later appeal

  18. Is it so difficult to get the facts right? The official Celtic site says Legia fielded an ineligible player.

    No.

They fielded a SUSPENDED player as Paul quite rightly point out.

  19. The bares are in a rage today bhoys, it’s everybody’s fault from Celtic to uefa, we should just of told uefa no your all right we’ll crack on in the Europa league that’s what rangers would have done hahah right you are zombie

    That’s not strictly true…

In the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations 2014 it states under article 25d…

An investigation may be reopened if new evidence or facts emerge.

As far as I can see that is very unlikely.

The old huns also got through against Sporting Lisbon on a technicality in 71-72.

The more thems with short memories squeal about this, the bigger their feeling of sickness.

  22. Blind luck indeed. It was clear from the performances over the two legs that Celtic were playing no part in the outcome of this tie.

I’m concerned that we’re capable of passing any new obstacle to the champions league proper. However the next round is a new game, the aggregate scores are zero, let’s see if the squad can recognise this gift from the gods and respond as they should.
