Lagerbielke and the Jack Hendry model

120

There will be plenty of regret in some quarters if Gustaf Lagerbielke leaves this month, with a loan looking likely.  You and I have seen far worse in the Celtic central defence over the years, but the mind of the manager appears to have been made up and his is not short of competitive options in that area.

With a squad as big as we have, hard decisions need to be made.  Just as we discussed with Adam Montgomery earlier in the week, the financials on how a fringe player leaves the club go a long way to determining how successful we will be.

Think Benfica, who made plenty from Jota and could do the same from Paulo Bernardo, despite neither making the cut in Lisbon.   We paid £3m for Gustaf.  Serie A has been a league where former Scottish Premiership players appreciate in value.  A loan at any of the three clubs reportedly interested in him could have the same effect Jack Hendry’s loan to Oostende had for a central defender who suffered significantly worse critical appraisal than Gus.

  1. Why hello there Friday eve!

    Baltic conditions continue.

As Jobo of this parish might say, 3 more sleeps.

  2. From earlier.

    Morning all.

I would like to thank everyone for their kind words on the passing of my uncle, Terry McGowan.

I have made aware the lovely comments to his immediate and extended family.

    Again, many thanks.

  3. I’m sure Brendan Rogers will keep Lagerbieke ,I don’t think he is a bad player,if you listen to Rogers press conference yesterday,he mentioned how long it can take players to adapt on coming from all over the world,so I don’t expect many players to leave in this transfer window, the media is our biggest problem in this country, always having a go with made up stories ,and unfortunately a lot of the Celtic Supporters buy into them ,

  4. Brian,

Condolences on the loss of Terry, my Gran was a McGowan and came from a big family in the Calton, originally from Leitrim.

Condolences to you Big Jimmy on the loss of your dad, remember the good times

  5. BRRB,

Are you sampling the legendary cheapest three course meal in all of Glasgow Town. ?

  6. If he leaves on a loan and not a permanent deal despite us being willing to sell him, that would indicate to me that BR is probably right in his assessment.

  7. Paul 67,

We can only speculate, ultimately we have to trust our manager in these situations.

When Ange got appointed as manager DD was right in there with full on confidence while the rest of us were struggling n stuttering to pronounce his name.

£3M is a lot in Celtic terms and we should remember there was nobody else at the club ready to play in Lagerbielke’s position in those early testing games?

We’ve never in our history had five ‘oven ready’ centre backs, and if Gustav is only fifth in line, so be it.

It’s a sign of how big we are, since Jock Stein and Celtic were knocked back by the SFA from playing Celtic Reserves in Scottish League 2

  11. BELMONTBRIAN : Condolences to you and your family on the loss of your uncle who appears to have been a leading light of The Celtic Family in Luton.

On a 5 year deal no less. As is Yang, Lagerbielke and Holm. Now there’s talk of Scales getting a 5 year deal.

I’m not convinced on the soundness of giving such long contracts unless it’s demonstrable quality.

    Our squad is ridiculously bloated.

  18. An Dun, think that the 5 year deal is to spread the transfer fee for a smaller impact on the financial rules, not sure why on extension though?

Maybe we should stop our proxy wars and selling our weapons to non democratic governments,us being the democratic whore who drops it pants to sell its weaponry to anyone who will buy.

Remember no refugees no Celtic, and do you think we are assimalated here comfortably enough to deny others an escape from Genocide, like the irish potato Genocide at Britains behest only this time we remotely provide the weaponry to displace millions.

You misunderstood. I said a few salvos in front , 100 yards. That would certainly send me back from whence I came, wouldn’t you. You do raise a good point though re selling of weapons. It’s a bit like the Yanks telling Israel to stop the war, all the time supplying weapons to them

Almost, except that was 18 year olds on 10 year contracts, before Bosman, and after the kids had signed for DU because their scout was also the manager of the Scottish Schools’ team who promised them they’d play for Scotland if they signed for DU.

  24. Marspapa …Aye you are right enough but when challenged on the clubs new recruitment policy he punched the journos lights in 🤣…On the subject of the Dundee Hibernians … I always thought Sturrock and Narey would have done a job for us 🤔🍀
