Languishing in Paris

710

When watching Real Mardrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich it is easy to be discouraged at the gap between where we are and the quarter finals of the Champions League, but despite the many hundreds of millions spent on both Paris St Germain and Chelsea, the standard of passing and decision making throughout their game last night was abysmal.   Despite their win, PSG were the worst offenders last night, even the Great One was poor.

There is now a real prospect that no English side will make it to the semi-final stage of either European tournament for the first time since 2003, when Liverpool were last to drop out, at the quarter finals stage of the Uefa Cup……..  You’re welcome.

What struck me most watching last night’s game was Sky TV’s Gary Neville pondering how long PSG’s star players would languish in such a poor league.  This is the French league we’re talking about here, not the Scottish Premiership, it’s Paris, not the ‘New East End’!

It’s easy to mock Neville but he asks an interesting question, will players always migrate to a higher-profile league?  If so, there are more clubs than just Celtic in need of structural change.

I tend to agree but Charlton was a class act. I always feel that England have a problem with team work. THere always seems to be a split in their camp. Bobby Robson was the last England manager who managed that well. Terry Venables also did well with a limited squad but probably had the most potent strike force England have had for a very long time in 1996 with Shearer & Sheringham. Ian Wright and Robbie Fowler couldn;t get in that team. They have been blessed with some great players over the years but the English public and media are very tough on their players for any slip up.

It is my belief that the English players and the national team are at a disadvantage to most teams in world football because their players in the majority never leave England. Players who usually progress and get better play numerous styles of football and different systems under multiple coaches in different countries. I think it helps them become complete players. The CL obviously helps in the modern game but in the past with one or two exceptions English players have stayed in England and only a few could be described as world class. Moore, Charlton, Matthews, Banks and possibly one or two others.

I think what Joey Barton has done to his credit is raise the debate.

England will never win anything because the press pick their team

It is no coincidence that the last 2 managers to do anything with them had both announced they were leaving before the tournament started – robson & venables

They are also overhyped with generally crap players with crap attitudes

Re the spot fixing arrests yesterday-I was at a Preston game in November with a few pals in the Prawn Sandwich End.The bookie came in to the box,we decided to bet 10/1 an opposition player to get a red card.Preston were home and hosed, into the 2nd minute of injury time,Scot Paul Gallagher is penalised deep in the opposition half, kicks the ball away.A defender grabs Gallagher,he skelps the guy with a great left hook, the guy hits him back, both get sent off,cue wild celebrations. It was a few weeks after the initial spot fixing arrests, and i said at the time it loked very dodgy.Today Preston say the National Crime Agency have been in touch with them re new allegations. It all could be a coincedence of course….

That statement there is one of the problems in British football. The EPL may be nowhere near as good as they think it is but we don’t half give the Scottish game a kicking. I have watched games from both leagues this year and also matches from Europe and the Scottish league is nowhere near as bad as it is portrayed. The number of foreign players is dropping and the average age of he sides is reducing. There are more ball players and flair players being introduced to teams. Our game is certainly on the up and if we continue in this format our game will get better and better. England has way too many foreign imports it is ruining their game in much the same way our game was being ruined in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Having a genuine quality foreigner is fine but having the dross that are no better than our youngsters on inflated wages is crazy. I would now like to see the SFA/SPFL put a rule in place that you can’t spend anymore than 60% or 70% of your earnings on transfers and wages. This will help reduce debts and ensure that a Rangers or a Hearts is less likely to happen. It’s like the 3 foreigner rule but in a financial format.

The English game is going to implode in debt. The more they make from TV the more they spend. It’s a virus. Look at the state of Bolton? They are hundreds of millions in debt and were making big TV money for decades.

A crazy state of affairs down there and it will get worse. Scottish football is not in as bad a state as some people think. What is required now to help our game and kick on again is financial stability and stringent rules to ensure that teams operate within their means.

He has shown his ability against better defenders than the Ibrox reserves. I was impressed by the way that John Herron, playing the unfamiliar right back role, created space to leave him isolated against the terrified Ibrox left back.

Hypothetical of course, but an all time Scotland XI would be at least as good as the England one, but would be nowhere near as good as the XI from Brazil, Italy, or Germany.

What I find even more annoying than the 110% thing is when the pundits start talking about players in the plural sense e.g. the Shearers, and the Dalglieshes and the Sounesses, I mean what’s that all about! There only one of them! It rattles my cage every time.

Tell you what is wrong with Scottish football is lack of consistency from the other teams. Aberdeen’s last three games are drawn, now if they could stop that then they would be a lot closer to the bhoys and any victory against us would be more meaningful.

    In the 4.50 at Aintree

Zabana about 6 or 7/1 and I have been told to have a good each way bet

In the 9.15 at Dundalk I have been told that a big run is expected from House Limit (about 12/1) This is owned by the same guy as last weeks Dundalk winner Farranadooney

Under no circumstances however is anyone to put 110% of their wages on these horses

Good point. It is appropriate on some occasions though, such as when discussing the Nevilles, the Charltons or indeed the Rangerses.

  31. I was listening to the live Radio commentary of the Lyon-Juventus match last night. The pair of commentators are very knowledgeable about football and are among the most enthusiastic Lyon commentators you could imagine. There depth of knowledge of the game of football is enormous and, quite frequently, they set up a challenge to make teams of French players, old and new, who have certain characteristics. Last night, they spent the ‘boring’ parts of the match trying to name a select side who were all less than 1.65 metres (less than 5feet 5 inches) tall. Great challenge. Jimmy Johnstone and Billy Bremner would be in my Scottish team of wee men.

Yes, but how many of that all time Scotland XI would be from the last 15 years say.

Darren Fletcher is probably the most recent one playing for one of Europe’s top clubs, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be in most people’s all time Scotland X1

Scotland just doesn’t produce top quality players anymore
