Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

The other night we were chatting bout the atmosphere at Old Trafford for the rapid vienna game.

i went down on a bus from langside college,a merry bus which pulled in at southwaite and got the booze out the boot.i recall the bus filing along in lanes of traffic, it was a bad omen when sumdi ran on and booted Pacault in the rsMcColls. i still think we were good enough to progrss but Uefa deemed naw and the Celtic board imo should have walked away from the tie with integrity intact but they dint.

at end of game there was nearly trouble as united fans celebrated their 3-2 win at tannadice as we left the stretford end.

Coming home up the m6 one of those early automatic double decker buses overtook us and bounced onto the verge out again spinning around and ending up on the grass at side.miracoulously it didnt turn over but the back wheels were wrecked.our bus and 2 other buses took the glasgow tims on it to buchanan st.a crazy end to a mad trip squire.

i think Everton done them in final.

Talking about Celtic I really do hope that we come up with a MON/Rodgers type appointment …we need something to galvanise the club and give the fans bit of hope for next season.

TBH I find these World Cup internationals during a pandemic a nonsense however the barking mad award goes to N Ireland and a friendly against USA😵😱

  11. It’s politics that will let fans into games in Scotland

It’s politics that will allow us to follow our team abroad.

It’s politics that will grant us planning oermission

It’s politics that decides taxation on our players.

It’s politics that kept the huns in football

It’s politics that treats the huns more favourably.

It’s politics that decides our parking restrictions.

It’s politics that will decide if we can have a pint before or after the game.

Its politics that decides if football remains open.

It’s politics that decides the interest rates we will pay on our borrowings.

It’s politics that will decide when Irish fans can come over.

In summary: Politics is and will decide our football destiny for the foreseeable future, it cannot be separated and it is nonsensical to try.

Politics and Cwltic are as one, from 1887 onward.

International breaks always hit the blog. Especially this rotten season.

In reality with all at Celtic seemingly taking a vow of silence there is not that much to discuss.

When we finally sign our new manager the blog will come alive as we will never please everybody.

I am similar to you in that I have never felt such disenchantment with the club. At least in the 1990s we knew things were bad for a reason and change was on the horizon if we looked hard enough.

  21. lets all do the huddle on

the only problem with complaining about politicos posting on here is that half the time P67s posts are political, which he is entitled to do because its his blog

but folk cant then complain if others start posting political stuff

even if it does become tedious

so it comes from the top

and P67 will be posting more and more political stuff on the run up to the election so its only going to get worse

  22. Greenpinta @ 4:31

    You are 100% correct.

It was a political decision that initially knocked our 10iar bid off course after the Kilmarnock game.

Now I am not saying that but for Sturgeon’s heavy -handed & selective intervention we would have won the title, however it ensured that we were always going to be chasing – psychologically it was, to say the least, unhelpful. Since then of course there have been Covid transgressions by our friends at Ibrox which have been treated differently…politically.

There will be no independence for at least ten years (if ever), and there will be no 10iar chance for at least ten years….but politics will affect everyone of us, EVERY day & EVERY year.
