Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

Some people willing to put their reputation on the line last night on Twitter saying it’d be Howe.

Compared with Keane, this has to be welcomed news.

  9. A not proven verdict on a very serious charge is so yesterday and completely ambiguous.

Anyway, our manager speculation is getting ridiculous. Surely we have had adequate time to consider and interview all relevant candidates.

Other clubs seem to manage this fundamental, yet we seem to struggle with sound decision making.

This is not a strength, it is a weakness.

  10. No idea really of the input Dominic McKay had in the appointment of Steve Tandy as Scotland’s defence coach but if he was involved then credit to him, it has proved to be a fantastic choice. Apply that type of application to choosing our own coaching set-up and we will find ourselves well placed ahead of next season. All credit to the Six Nations, and to the NFL before them in delivering top class tournaments in difficult times.

  11. 60% is the acknowledged figure by ” experts” to achieve herd immunity.

The UK has vaccinated nearly 30m persons of adult age.

Under 30′ s have statically no more threat from the virus than from the ” usual” ailments. However their mental health issues have rocketed.

So, if the vaccine roll out continues at the same rate then within a few weeks there should be no requirement for continued emergency powers.

There should be nothing to prevent us returning to Paradise and boozers in full numbers. Variants will be a natural progression of the virus.

Otherwise what is the point of the vaccine?

  13. I am sick fed up with this whole manager pish.

This is getting embarrassing we are setting the new guy up to fail right away.

No preparation for European qualifiers, no getting to know squad, no preparation for next league campaign.

    Shhhhhhhhhhhh it’s a secret.

I will say it again if it is Keane or anyone not in a job they should be in right away. If they have a job with sky and there is financial penalties that we do not want to pay at least come out and tell us that its Keane. You are not breaking any employment law by saying you are leaving to go to a new employer.

So it cannot be Keane as I’m sure our custodians would let us know….right?

If it’s a Euros manager then it is a game of Russian roulette as we could have to wait until after or near enough our season has started. That is a DISASTER waiting to happen and even worse guidance by our custodians.

Make no mistake we could be walking into another shit show.

Paul67 was certain that the reason Lennon wasn’t replaced earlier was that there was nobody available who they fancied.

Keane has been available for over a decade. Surely if it was Keane, he’d have been in ages ago…

  15. `Such findings suggest that not only are positive thinkers healthier and less stressed, they also have greater overall well-being. Up until 2017 the SNP conference featured a tribute to Donaldson by way of the Arthur Donaldson Memorial lecture.

I believe Sturgeon gave the lecture one year.

How big a market is this for the bookies? How much money is at stake?

It generates a lot of publicity because it’s topical and controversial but could it be be based on a few dozen small bets totalling a few hundred pounds and therefore the shifting odds would signify nothing?

  20. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

    From Mahe on Sentinel Celts:

“Dermot and a freshly installed Peter once placed a top bracket manager in the slow lane, they are doing the equivalent to the entire club now, while insisting on top dollar. From you of course not them.

Everything isn’t alright, we want fundamental change, plans put in place instead of reactions, not a scolding.

Patronizing those who must turn a blind eye to death, FFP and bent refs just to stay involved is hardly the greatest business strategy in the world but incredibly it looks like one our majority shareholder has chosen.”

Totally agree. As SS/55 graffiti goes up round the city our absentee landlord invites us to shut our yap and buy into the whole rotten carve up. Not me.

  21. Maybe Big Jimmy could put ` a few hundred pounds` on Eddie Howe and we will see if the odds change immediately :-)).

I seem to remember being told that we had never had an ` Eddie` playing for Celtic.

I also seem to remember being told on here that that was wrong .

I am not sure which of those two `seems` is accurate…..if either.

    ###

I don’t know, not being a betting man, I suppose it would depend on the size of the market.

I just wonder though whether the bookies don’t just treat these things as a marketing device as much as anything else.

On what basis does a punter decide how to bet? Who they’d want to get the job? Rumours? Inside info?

  23. Ernie- absolutely, if I tried to put £500 on Keane for example, I probably would be offered £100 @ 5/1,£400 @5/2 ,the manager market is very volatile and a few small bets can change prices quickly, seems Redknapp and his pals cleaned up when he went from Southampton to Portsmouth, he was 40-50/1,as they are big rivals, and nobody thought it would happen.

‘seems Redknapp and his pals cleaned up’

    ##

That’s the other thing, it’s wide open to that sort of stuff and the bookies aren’t daft so they probably don’t want too much being put at risk.

Just how much profit could TGD make if he appointed Arlene Foster at 500 to 1?

  25. Ernie- as you say, the manager markets are open to insider dealing, which is why they are cautious to smallish bets.

  26. If its Eddie Howe get him announced now. He’s not currently with a club.

HS : The question about Eddie was raised before on here. We had to go way back to just after we were founded for an Eddie McCann.
