Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

Association was a well chosen word..

    ..

Don’t know if you are being deliberately obtuse or willfully ignorant. So I will bite.

Association as in word association. As in that wee game analysts play to get to the true character of a person.

There was no attack on nationality I mentioned two nationalities because of their revelance.

Are you really telling me that you are unaware of what the Gaelic word Alba means

  3. !!BADA BING!! on 27TH MARCH 2021 10:35 AM

Exactly. Twitter rumours spreading like wildfire would be enough to get the markets moving.

Hopefully, that’s all the Keane rumour was and that’s where it’ll stay.

Thanks for that. I had a feeling the one and only Eddie was in ancient times.

    Wot u on about. ?

Of course I know the term Alba. My Grandmother from the Western Isles spoke Gaelic as her mother tongue. This is still the area where Gaelic is most prevalent.

Seeing you’re obsessed with nationality, my other Grandmother was from Ireland.

But did you know Alba was first used to refer to Britain as a whole .

I would wager AS is more comfortable on Russia Today rather than BBC Alba.

Now I won’t insult you by asking about nationality or Gaelic credentials.

    Stay safe and HH.

Well done to Jonathan Afolabi on his goal for Ireland. He looks more suited to their U31s than U21s.

More and more in modern football I see all contact below waist level penalised, a non tackling game. Imposing physicality on opponents to be allowed as yet, has to be upper body only. I guess we tailor our thinking of modern football to embrace rugby league shaped athletes.

It’s leading to games comprised of waves of harum scarum movement back and forward, attacks usually ending with an aimless cross to no-one, without any actual football breaking out. TV heaven they say.

  12. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

The Alba Party is not a serious party and all Salmond’s talk of a “supermajority” for independence is merely that – talk.

What he is doing is testing the well-known fault lines that now exist within the SNP. Sturgeon is tainted & on ‘parole’, she daren’t make another faux pas; and she won’t face Salmond face to face.

Having seen the Sturgeon/Evans #me too cabal’s attempt to back-stab the individual who took them from ceilidh dancers to power, then blatantly lie to cover it up, the membership of the SNP now have a decision to make.

The SNP, with the UK parties’ bigger vote split three ways between Conservatives, Labour & Liberals, have been in an unassailable position at Holyrood with their Green Lackeys for years. The opposition have been unable to ‘lay a glove on them’.

However they have become cocky, arrogant, deceitful and corrupt. The seeds of their downfall have been sown from within.

Salmond and his allies want revenge and it starts now. Had Sturgeon resigned, as she should have done, Salmond would not have pursued this course of action – however when she used the Hamilton verdict to wriggle off the hook, things moved swiftly.

Like Watergate, it is not the original “crime’ that has done for them, but the ham-fisted lie-ridden cover-up. However unlike Watergate, we don’t have a media worth it’s name in Scotland – we have no Washington Post – no Woodward & Bernstein. What we have is a cowed & compliant media, totally in the pocket of the SNP, as are the politicised civil service, crown office & the Lord Advocate in Scotland.

So Salmond has had to go it alone he has had two victories out of two – he smells a third & fourth.

  13. AN TEARMANN on 27TH MARCH 2021 11:32 AM

Do you think Arthur Donaldson was right to suggest doing a deal with Hitler in order to achieve Scottish independence?

  14. I don’t know what all the speculation is about, Celtic has announced their coach for next season

    It’s Park’s of Hamilton 😨

  15. GENE on 27TH MARCH 2021 12:30 PM

    🤣😂

Seems a lot more youth players (those not loaned out for first team experience) training in first squad, not sure if just temporary.

    https://youtu.be/85xo_0R3jts

Come to the conclusion; the one thing I’d prefer in a new coach, is playing more of our youth players regularly.

  16. Just received my second AZ vaccine and was a bit worried when I read the following;

The (Drinkaware) panel’s chair, Dr Fiona Sim said: “First and foremost, we urge you to listen to the advice to stay at home as much as possible, to stop the spread of the virus.

“Then, do get vaccinated if you are offered a COVID-19 vaccine. This is regardless of whether you ever drink any alcohol or not.

“We advise that you don’t drink any alcohol for at least two days before, and at least two weeks after, you’ve been vaccinated, to try to ensure your immune system is at its best to respond to the vaccine and protect you.”

Seems a bit OTP but needs must!

    Hail! Hail!

  17. And to think we wouldn’t pay the same price10 years later for his replacement, considering the inflation in football.

  18. We should start as we mean to go on………..

    THAT bus should be parked.

As a Happy Clapper I want to support everything the Club does……..Thanks to insights and education from posters on This Dear Green Place I’ve altered the perspective a wee bit.

I’m worried what Dom’s brief is tbh………..Re-orientating Dermot I expect is near impossible but he needs to know that Supporter relatiuons need mending

Saddam Hussein was horrid. However, I have my doubts that the invasion and his removal was simply down to the fact he was not a nice person – otherwise why stop there? Why not Burma, Thailand, Zimbabwe, DPRK……etc?

  22. Gee Bee i agree.

Too many minorities persecuted around the world, even today in China for example.

The numbers of Kurds killed in “modern history” incredible.

Were there other motivations? Yes agreed.

Less and less relevant to Elections in Scotland.

But it’s being brought more on here than the right wing press in England did.

  23. Micro Marxist / Toaty Trumper @ ad nauseum

You really do talk some tripe from below your bridge.

Why the anti TB / GB angle — you seem to hate progressives and absolve the Tories.

Of all the recent events to discuss you seem to be very selective.

    Suez — 1956

    Belfast — 1969

    Iraq / SH love — 1981 / 1989

    Falklands — 1982.

    Gulf — 1990/91

    Balkans — 1990’s

    Iraq — 2003

    Libya — 2011.

    Syria — 2012 / ongoing

    Yemen — 2014 / ongoing.

You seem to have a very selective capacity for debate.

Would it be a case that the brains trust behind you have a very limited understanding / narrow story to sell?

  24. The debate over the pronunciation of Salmond’s new Party is a bit silly.

Alba is pronounced Al-a-p-a in Gaelic but when we speak Engloish it can be rendered accurately as Al-bah

In the same way as French speakers call their capital Par-ee and we refer to it as Par-is.

The whole experience of this week with the Harrasment Committe report and the Hamilton report has been a bit tawdry and 2nd rate.

No-one has been exonerated or cleared via the criminal trials nor the report. Both Ms. Sturgeon and Mr. Salmond have been found not sufficiently guilty in terms of the terms of reference of their charges.

Its a bit like the huns claiming LNS cleared them of wrongdoing; he didn’t.

  27. GB @ 1.26

SH had to go — he developed / produced / used chemical weapons in a manner not seen since WW1.

In fact he took it to the next level by using them on civilians.

He did it without sanctions because it suited too many to see someone else do their dirty work for them.

However we all sat back and watched it happen for over 7 years.

It was a crime against humanity and “we” were complicit.

  28. MARTIM1980 on 27TH MARCH 2021 1:38 PM

To be fair, I’ve avoided the political stuff on here but I did feel the need to respond to the Iraq comment for some reason.

I’ve always voted Labour but whatever party we vote for, it doesn’t mean we have to like everything they do. That wouldn’t be healthy for a democracy. Iraq was a blot on the copybook for sure but we shouldn’t forget more Tory MPs voted for it and fewer Tory MPs quit over it so while the Iraq invasion was abhorrent, it’d be unfair to call it “Labour’s war” as such.

  29. MADMITCH on 27TH MARCH 2021 1:48 PM

I’m not doubting whether or not Saddam was a lovely chap. But I’m questioning whether they were the sole reasons for his removal and the blatant lack of consistency in who the west decides needs removing.

  30. SH had to go — he developed / produced / used chemical weapons in a manner not seen since WW1.
