Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

Another returning at Malaga airport today was Shaun Cromber who despite voting for Britain to leave the EU, didn’t believe it would end his Spanish lifestyle, he said: ” Yes I voted out, but I didn’t realise it would come to this, my application has been rejected and we are on our way home – the wife is in tears, she’s distraught if I’m honest and I’m not too happy at the prospect of returning back to the UK.

“I’ve loved living on the Costa del Sol and after 5 years can’t believe it has come to this, we applied but got rejected and so have no choice, although long term I think the Spanish will regret chucking us out of Spain”

    Pure frontier gibberish.

You are suffering from selective amnesia and a desire to believe tripe of Facebook.

Laundry list of Brit / Yank bad — at some point you will grow up.

Your own wee potato republic — 1922 to 1973 — right or wrong.

You have to wonder why so many from the 26 counties emigrated to the UK and the US in that time.

I wonder how many Irish surnames are listed on the Vietnam memorial?

Your own wee tax dodging republic — 1973 to today — stealing bread out of the mouths of starving infants.

You decry US foreign policy but are happy to take a cut of their offshore tax dodging.

Some example to the rest of the world — the water is warm as long as it is heated with hot cash from across the sea.

Consequently blow it oot yer erse ya rocket.

Your comments get more disgusting after every reading.

I hope you are on the swally / cheeky wa’ter because you are seriously unhinged if you are not.

Your focus on the failures of others makes you incapable of seeing the failures all around at home.

That is the charitable explanation for your howls of rage at people far away.

The uncharitable view is that you are a hypocrite who cannot cope with local scandals and want to hide behind perceived failures elsewhere.

Will we be looking for another no.1 keeper next season, or will we rely on Bain plus weans?

I think Bain is decent, but probably a second choice IF we can get a top-notch replacement for Barkas, who surely will be offloaded.

Barkas is a really strange one – came to us with a good reputation – solid, experienced international. I see he’s now lost his place for the Greek national team, so expect he’ll not be keen to extend his stay with us either.

I think you are the one suffering from a few punches to a bad bruise.

You have no political views of your own.

At least that is your persona on CQN.

You do have a favourite film though — They shoot journalists don’t they.

Anyway — I hope it is nice and dry under that bridge of yours.

Story I have heard — third hand from a taxi driver is that VB has not settled in Scotland and has struggled to make himself part of the squad.

To the point that he has lost weight and has struggled with both the lingo and confidence.

Not an exact copy of the strange story of SD but pretty close to it.

The dressing room culture this season has been horrible.

Never good since WGS was in charge but it has collapsed and it is every clique for themselves.

  14. MR @ 8.37

I might be a bit crude but you swim with the tax dodgers.

26 counties — GDP vs GNP / Why the huge gap — discuss?

  15. Will try and get back after the game , I am watching the independent Free State/Republic of Ireland/Éire/Ootato Republic playing the independent Luxembourg.

In the meantime I suggest you read the tax policies of said Luxembourg, Netherlands or France to see how they also manipulate their tax systems to create employment ( far more suttle than ours). Or, try Inglorious Empire by Shashi Tharoor. Socialism in Britain was a case of sharing the stolen property from non white people instead of letting the Tories hog the lot.

  16. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

In terms of harmony in the camp, it can’t have been good.

Team selection has been chaotic, several instances of players clearly playing fo themselves, young players blanked (and reacting in twitter / liking ‘negative’ posts, etc.). The one I particularly hated to see was when Moi was hung out to dry publicly by the manager for the crime of checking a score on his phone after being subbed.

However – all water under the bridge. Signing a CEO with a good, professional track record makes me optimistic. I am not taken in by the Keane-type predictions.

The direction seems – to me – to be a modernising, forward-looking one. I’m expecting a DoF – Harkins fits the mould, and NOT because of where he is from. If that happens, I’d expect a similarly progressive head coach appointment.

I’m actually really looking forward to the next chapter in Celtic history. I have a feeling it will be bright!
