Legia frustration spills onto Celtic

1640

In a press conference today, Legia major shareholder, Dariusz Mioduski, has been scathing about Celtic, who benefited from Legia’s mistake last week.  Perhaps his most important comment was, “The football family of Legia are all suffering now.  Their dreams are shattered, it’s against football values”.

There can be no doubt that Legia are suffering and that their punishment was in no way proportional to their mistake.  Some of this hurt is inevitably going to find its way to Celtic, who Legia apparently asked to withdraw from the tournament before the Disciplinary Committee sat.  Celtic, Legia inform us, declined to respond.  My understanding is that the rules do not allow for input from the losing team when a suspended player has been involved – as they do when an ineligible player is involved.

Former Juventus-great and current chief of the Polish FA Zibi Boniek had earlier said, “Everyone thoroughly looked into this matter, but Michel Platini and Giorgio Marchetti [from Uefa]said one thing, ‘Zibi, there is no backdoor.  Nothing.  Regulations do not provide for any other penalty.  We are very sorry’.”

If there was a possibility Celtic could choose to forgo their place in favour of Legia, Celtic would be presented with a moral dilemma, but I don’t think the club’s actions would be any different.  Their reluctance to ‘pick up the phone’ to Legia suggest as much.

One area where Mioduski’s information differs from Celtic’s is where he states “No-one at UEFA in Nyon was even considering a 3-0 forfeit Celtic win on the morning of the ruling.”  I understand Celtic were told the exact opposite, that a forfeit was the only outcome possible, corroborating what Platini and Marchetti told Boniek.

Our very best wishes to Fraser Forster, who yesterday became a Southampton player.  Southampton have an enormous rebuilding exercise ahead after selling the majority of their first team players this summer.  They now have a good keeper, who I expect will be busy in the opening months of the season.

After my article yesterday on Fraser Forster’s dedication to his work, a CQN’er sent me this nugget:

“My brother used to go to the dancing with Jinky.  He would go to Jinky’s to collect him and Jimmy would be all suited up, apart from wearing his sand shoes, as he would be practicing his dribbling while waiting to be picked up”.

There are no shortcuts to brilliance.

I expect all teams to honour the rules that they signed up to when entering the competition. Legia’s mistake is their problem.

    Cork,

They cannot accept rules. They may want to change them. Cheats.

    I won’t patronise Z. This is a Celtic forum. I defend Celtic.

No I don’t know the guy, but he has offered to help me a fellow supporter, just because I asked.

You’ll see from TT’s posts that he follows the club.

His original post about Celtic being inadvertently besmirched in all this is true.

FFS I have lost any respect I had for Legia. Due to their own incompetence, they broke the rules. Now we have one of their owners writing an open, I’d rather call it a pathetic, letter asking for a 1 off replay?

I would be embarrassed if I was a Legia supporter.

  6. Merlin McMurdo said last week that David Cooper Templeton was the best footballer in Scotland bar none.

Ffs…..on today’s evidence he wouldn’t even have been the best player in my back garden this morning and it was only me and the dug involved.

Why are the Huns so deluded?

It is beyond embarrassment sometimes if you ever come across them, in company, outside of Scotland.

I don’t suppose Maribor would be too pleased if the decision were to be overturned. I am sure they would rather play a team who had lost heavily than the team who had made an error in playing a suspended player.

  8. Just seen the Sevco score – sevvies are by no means guaranteed promotion, even with helping hands along the way.

Can the BBC not employ someone to actually read UEFAs articles and rules of association before letting their journalists lose the run of themselves ?

  9. Beefheart, They are distraught, imagine if it was us, what kind of stuff would be getting posted here. We don’t deserve to go through, ok looks like we will but at least we shouldn’t be goading them by calling them cheats. I’m not patronising Mr.Z, I feel genuinely sorry for him.

BIG-CUP-WINNERS. I will accept what you say but in my opinion Celtic are in no way besmirched they are completely blameless in all of this but it appears now that Legia are muck throwing which does them no favours. Also if you read TTs posts hes arguing with himself ( if the rules allowed it ) the rules dont allow so why bring it up very strange indeed.H.H.

  11. Obviously we’re going to stay very professional in all of this

  13. Is there another team in Europe who would not take EUFA’s decision re Legia? Absolutely not. Celtic have abided by EUFA rules when they could, and should, have appealed. That those rules then turn out to benefit Celtic is Karma–and I know it’s a capital K. The MSM is a disgrace in Scotland–but that’s par for the course.. ON the actual football side, RD deserves a chance, even if his tactics are impenetrable. Those wishing Stokes et al away, are being premature. However, the body language and lack of effort against Legia is impossible to explain or forgive. To finish–the reason why I stay with this site is the likes of Auldheid, BTRH, Exiled Tim, Cork Celt, and a few others. Those posters who denigrate the club do favours to anyone except the MSM. Anyone who quotes Hugh Keevins really needs psychiatric help.

  14. Corkcelt

Would not want to offend Mr Z.

But the owner of Legia is now trying to put their mistake on Celtic. We have done nothing wrong here after hearing the owner on sky today some posts are understandable.

  15. Just dropped in to say that Tiny Tim IS a Celtic supporter. Not sure why anyone would question this…..

And Legia ae embarrassing themselves. Leave them to do that on their own…..

  16. Just heard the phrase “Barcelona Bears” on Sky Sports News. Is that a new thing? I’ve never heard it before.

Uly & Vmhan – always good to get beer tokens at THEMS expense!

The result today will also kill any Hun jibes about Legia in work tomorrow. :-)

TT – we already know that UEFA are a law unto themselves, so the club will do nothing except plan for the Maribor games. Like you, the whole episode just doesn’t sit right with me.

If there had been no precedent, then Legia could have been fined and still progressed.

I am happy that we will at least have 6 EL group games, as the team look like they wouldn’t have qualified. That’s down to a naive young manager trying to change things too quickly and the ongoing downsizing of the quality in the squad.

This is the ruling Legia have quoted in their sad attempt to force a replay

Article 34.5 of Uefa Disciplinary Rules

” If the requests of the parties and the ethics and disciplinary inspector are

identical, the disciplinary bodies may consider ruling in accordance with those

    requests. “

The athleticism of some of these guys, and the footballers last night, is beyond the capabilities of most of our spoilt part-time athletes

What I can’t get is this. If we enlisted the services of the Donegal football coach, what is he doing with us?? It’s certainly not fitness training

I know I have a bee in my bonnet about Anthony Stokes. But seriously, can anyone imagine him playing top flight Gaelic Games?? He’d be blowin oot his erchie after 10 mins.

  29. garygillespieshamstring on

I am sure the Scottish press would have had a completely different view if it had been the plucky wee saints or the sheep who had been the beneficiaries.

Also sure that we would have been slaughtered if we had made the same mistake. Don’t recall too much sympathy when dunfermline(?) were punted out of the Scottish cup when they played the guy who had picked up two bookings playing for someone else the previous year.

  30. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Rules are only rules if you agree with them.

If you don’t agree with them, you break them; or, as I’ve heard it described, challenge them.

That seems to be the way of the world now.

    I blame the anarchists!

It would be a great shame if Legiagate soured Zybszek’s affection for Celtic.
