Legia frustration spills onto Celtic

1640

In a press conference today, Legia major shareholder, Dariusz Mioduski, has been scathing about Celtic, who benefited from Legia’s mistake last week.  Perhaps his most important comment was, “The football family of Legia are all suffering now.  Their dreams are shattered, it’s against football values”.

There can be no doubt that Legia are suffering and that their punishment was in no way proportional to their mistake.  Some of this hurt is inevitably going to find its way to Celtic, who Legia apparently asked to withdraw from the tournament before the Disciplinary Committee sat.  Celtic, Legia inform us, declined to respond.  My understanding is that the rules do not allow for input from the losing team when a suspended player has been involved – as they do when an ineligible player is involved.

Former Juventus-great and current chief of the Polish FA Zibi Boniek had earlier said, “Everyone thoroughly looked into this matter, but Michel Platini and Giorgio Marchetti [from Uefa]said one thing, ‘Zibi, there is no backdoor.  Nothing.  Regulations do not provide for any other penalty.  We are very sorry’.”

If there was a possibility Celtic could choose to forgo their place in favour of Legia, Celtic would be presented with a moral dilemma, but I don’t think the club’s actions would be any different.  Their reluctance to ‘pick up the phone’ to Legia suggest as much.

One area where Mioduski’s information differs from Celtic’s is where he states “No-one at UEFA in Nyon was even considering a 3-0 forfeit Celtic win on the morning of the ruling.”  I understand Celtic were told the exact opposite, that a forfeit was the only outcome possible, corroborating what Platini and Marchetti told Boniek.

Our very best wishes to Fraser Forster, who yesterday became a Southampton player.  Southampton have an enormous rebuilding exercise ahead after selling the majority of their first team players this summer.  They now have a good keeper, who I expect will be busy in the opening months of the season.

After my article yesterday on Fraser Forster’s dedication to his work, a CQN’er sent me this nugget:

“My brother used to go to the dancing with Jinky.  He would go to Jinky’s to collect him and Jimmy would be all suited up, apart from wearing his sand shoes, as he would be practicing his dribbling while waiting to be picked up”.

There are no shortcuts to brilliance.

  1. You would actually think the SMSM and the increasingly poor Sky Sports News did not want us to progress in Europe. Poorly informed reporting and trying to portray us as culpable in someway.

Legia made a stupid, stupid error and it has cost them. We got an incredible bit of luck go our way. UEFA will not overturn the verdict despite Legia’s bleating. Celtic are doing the correct thing maintaining their silence on this issue.

I totally get Tiny Tim’s point but UEFA will not bend their rules as he suggests.

(TT Your post last night summed up my view exactly of our board just now.)

To the SMSM: Whatever happened to supporting the Scottish teams in Europe?

Rapidly losing all sympathy for Legia. What has their being turfed out of the CL to do with Celtic? Celtic having absolutely nothing to do with the disciplinary process Legia should be reserving their ire for UEFA and their own idiots who allowed such a thing to occur. So just imagine Celtic step aside and i guarantee that not only we will be in bother with UEFA that Legia W will still not get back into the CL. St Pats on standby.

  3. Barcelona Bears is a hint they are going to start mimicking the Lisbon Lions.

This is why it’s so important it is settled, publicly regarding their status. The Brutal lump the ball up the park, terrorising the city of Barca Bears were part of a Club which is no longer in existence. Unfortunately as the media and press have let them away with so much in this they will be pulling out cr*p like this until they either die again or until they believe the lie has been taken in.

This is where the advertising agency should be back involved and outlets like SKY who push such nonsense. This is a step further than before.

If anyone, anyone in the Scottish press or media, dares point this out in a presser or in type, we all know they’d lose their job. I so wish someone would say it though and watch their fellow peers argue for their beloved dead club, all on camera for everyone to see.

    Squire,

Bear in mind these fellas are amateurs.

Back to work in the morning.

They put the fitness of players in Scotland to shame

  7. The rules are extremely clear. I have absolutely no doubt that EUEFA didn’t want to take the tie off Legia but they simply had no other option. Celtic for their part have a fiduciary obligation to their Shareholders, they will sit back and take the match as would any other team in the Competition. All I am saying we should at least have the good grace to allow Legia let off steam and not add fuel to fire by either calling them cheats or taking the pi**.

The athleticism of some of these guys, and the footballers last night, is beyond the capabilities of most of our spoilt part-time athletes

What I can’t get is this. If we enlisted the services of the Donegal football coach, what is he doing with us?? It’s certainly not fitness training

I know I have a bee in my bonnet about Anthony Stokes. But seriously, can anyone imagine him playing top flight Gaelic Games?? He’d be blowin oot his erchie after 10 mins.

Jim McGuinness hasn’t been working with the first team – he has been working with youth players. However, I seem to remember reading that he WILL start helping with the first team this coming season.

  9. Re Legia…shame but they got it wrong not us.

  12. Regarding players, as the Exiled Tim has often pointed out, there are stacks of them in Spain and Portugal, who would love a chance at Celtic. A midfield enforcer is also required, from a lesser league, but who could be melded into the team. The team is the important thing not player’s egos. I don’t know where the scouts are going looking for players. I think their satnavs are fecked.

Paul has maintained CQN for10 years. He has only one rule – no swearing. If you can’t respect it or can’t cope posting alongside the plethora of posters on here who happily manage to do so every day, you could always post on a blog that has similar standards to yourself. Paul realises that children read CQN.

  14. There appears to be no room for discretion to be used in punishing teams who play a suspended player.

Discretion is the justification given when referees treat the same offences differently, when SFA treated Neil differently from some other managers, when SFA tried to change date of Cup Final to help Oldco.

Discretion is the space in which rule bending and rule breaking thrive.

    Yes I know.

I should have said so to further emphasise the point I was making.

By the same token imagine the levels of slothfulness “oor Anto” would plunge to if he had to actually work for a living as well

Question is how many of our players regard playing for Celtic as a job of work, in the professional sense?

Perhaps if Legia were to act like adults and admit they broke the rules rather than try to embroil an innocent party in their tantrums some of us may have retained some sympathy for them. I am uncomfortable with Celtic progressing due to the 6-1 humiliation Legia handed us however the behaviour of the Legia W board and Polish FA is bordering on Hunnish, twist the facts and try to blame everyone else for your woes. Why let clearly stated rules and facts get in the way?

  19. bournesouprecipe on

Very sad for Legia Warsaw that they’ve tried to turn their incompetence into a face off with Celtic. They knew this would be manna for the SMSM, and the language they’ve used is embarrassingly amateurish, in keeping with their administrators.

You don’t really believe that? Celtic would sign anyone cheap that was good, it’s what we do. No way our scouts are going nah don’t look at Spain and Portugal cos we can’t be bothered.

  26. What a weekend!

The Legia episode has worked to our advantage. We have lost out due to weird UEFA ruling in the past. I genuinely sympathise with Mr Z who must be totally scunnered and I wouldn’t like to be the Legia admin guy who made the error.

Let’s hope we can capitalise on our luck.

The permarage of the huns and the MSM makes it all the sweeter.

I can see where tinytim is coming from, but rules is rules and that is the end of it.

As suggested by others, I suspect that Legia’s bleating is for home consumption.

I cancelled SKY last month and I think it is today that it switches off. Doubtless there are things I will miss, but overall I feel cleansed. SKY emailed me this week to ask what they had done wrong and I told them that their endless promotion of EPL plus insulting deal for Scottish football coupled with a malign ‘influence’ on Govt/Courts etc kinda did it for me.
